Mallrats (1995)
One of the most over-rated movies I've ever seen
22 July 2001
There's thousands of them out there, the Kevin Smith disciples that swear he is the comic genius that Hollywood (or just film in general) need. Well I don't have an alternate answer for you, but if Smith's the future, then we have a serious problem. I've seen Clerks to Dogma and there have been plenty of funny scenes, and interesting ideas, but unfortunately nothing very new. Since the cult scene is becoming more and more popular, I understand why these movies have reached their level of acclaim. I'm not here to burst anyone's bubble about the Smith series, but after I saw this one I just had to comment. I mean it's really just not that good, but maybe I've seen too many good comedies prior to this one. Overall, if your mouth hurts after watching this movie then it's probably because everyone has convinced you that this movie is hilarious and you feel obligated to cough up some humor. Sure this movie is a big hit, but then again, so is Full House.

15 Minutes (2001)
It's De Niro, whadya want from me?!
16 March 2001
Yeah, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Deer Hunter, etc. It's Robert De Niro, and everyone knows he the best. I just saw this movie, walked in a the door a few minutes ago, and I'm surprised to see that most of the reviews on this movie are not so favorable. I was actually very satisfied. The acting held together well, protagonists were demented (but kept the movie going), and the movie wasn't really asking for anything outrageous. Sure sure, it's not Taxi Driver, but that's not what I went in looking for. Ed Burns and De Niro really make this movie work and Kelsey Grammar plays a great jerk-off. I enjoyed it, definitely worth my time (especially with movies like See Spot Run as an alternative). I'd say go see it, it's a good movie to have on the mind these days, and thanks Bobby, you never let me down.

Eight Days a Week (I) (1997)

Let's Not Talk About 'Clerks'
3 January 2001
I saw this on Showtime (or something of the sort) a while back, and it was surprisingly some real funny stuff. The story flowed well, the acting was good, and the comedy fit right in with the characters and timing. Assuming that Clerks is one of the best comedies ever (A ridiculously ludicrous assumption), this movie could be called the best since then. I don't think of it like that though, it stands well by its own, and is one of those evening movies that can keep you in the house when you really want to go out. Of course Keri Russell attracts many to this movie (justifiably so), but that doesn't prove to be a problem since a fan and a critic would both love the performance. It's a comedy for now, so see it soon, because now is always changing.

The 'Burbs (1989)
10/10
Highly Under-Rated
2 October 2000
This movie is hilarious. If you see it with some of your friends and you're in the mood for a laugh, this movie just hits the spot. I saw it a few times when I was a kid, and I recently saw it again now that I am just a tad older. I forgot how hilarious and well acted all the comedy holds in this movie. What else can I say, just one of those movies that you can't forget.

The 'Burbs (1989)

What a great way to end the decade!
28 July 2000
The 'burbs is the kind of movie that you can really enjoy if caught in the right mood. For me, it is always the right mood, but some people have to be in "the zone" to enjoy certain comedies. Such as Clue, or Fletch. This movie really is hilarious, especially Tom Hanks' pre-super movie star persona. For anyone who has ever lived in the city or the 'burbs, you can't help relate to most of the feelings in the movie. This movie is a pure comedy, and well done at that, mostly under-rated, because most people have never seen it. Since most people have never seen it, then you can become the genius to uncover this gold nugget, and impress all your friends. Overall hilarious movie (especially when other people are around!)

Something you should see....
11 March 2000
I saw this movie because my name is Chris Brinker, and in one of my idle points during the day I looked up my own name in the IMDB directory. Sure enough there was another Chris Brinker out there, and he produced this movie. I figured that I would go ahead and see it, why not?! So bam, I did and it was great. The movie is somewhat original (even the beginning credits are good to watch) but there are some overlapping areas in style that have been in other movies I know. With all the movies out there though, it doesn't bother me at all, and I'm sure the directors and producers knew of it anyways, so I don't waste too much time thinking about that one. Let me get down to it though, this movie really gets you into it, and the violence of each scene is displayed very well with flashbacks n such. Overall, just check it out, it's one of those movies that you'll show to all your friends sometime. I always like finding surprises on video, and this movie reminds me of that idea.

Fight Club (1999)
Don't be fooled by the good reviews
23 October 1999
I saw lots of good reviews for this film, and I and 3 other friends went to go see it. It all sums up to this, some nice violent scenes and a sort of funny attempt at an interesting plot (done many times before in about 50 movies), but most importantly the camera views. By that I mean to say that the movies starts out with some really great camera views, with the use of computer images and such. That I really liked, but then about 30 minutes into the movie they stop using all those camera views and computer edited scenes and such. It's really inconsistent, maybe they ran out of money or something, but I doubt that it's for an artistic expression. Altogether the movie was really long and after talking with my friends and some other people at the movie, no one really enjoyed it much. We all just wanted it to end. I don't know how this got on the best movies of all time list, but most importantly; save your money!

Ice Cream Man (1995)
I can't remember when I laughed so hard
19 August 1999
This movie is 100% hilarious. No joke, the whole movie is cheesier than Wisconsin. Notice the shoes in the movie, that really makes me laugh, but not as much as the man with a pillow under his shirt. If you are going to have a party or just a friend, then this is a must rent, but if you are looking for something dramatic or emotional, then you might want to stick with Beaches.

It's a Besson film!
19 August 1999
I first saw Leon, having no idea of Luc Besson's talent, but after Leon, I just had to see more. So next in line was Nikita, and this movie is incredible. Most people, especially Americans, would expect to find action and explosions, which are in this movie, but not in the proportion that we are used to. (I am an American) Although some may classify this movie as an action thriller, Luc Besson never leaves his stories on one level. It actually carries a drama to it, with Nikita being set up for a job that she can't handle. Sort of a redemption story I guess you could say. Overall, the acting is very good, especially for Anne Parillaud (spelling?), who I believe won an award for this film, but check the database for that one. Of course Jean Reno does a great job in this film as Victor "the cleaner." Interesting to see him in this film to later pick up the same profession in Leon. If you ask me a very well put together movie, with Eric Serra (yet another man with a talent) backing up each scene with his musical score. Watch this movie carefully, there is much to it.

Luc Besson works in mysterious ways
12 August 1999
I remember first seeing this movie. I was excited because this was a Luc Besson film. I mean Luc Besson changed my view on movies with Leon (aka Professional). I used to just watch movies and enjoy them, but by the end of Leon I was literally crying, and I've never really been the same. The 5th Element doesn't exactly possess the quality to produce tears, but the story line and characters are just simply fun to watch. Eric Serra, the composer for the film who usually works with Luc Besson, did an incredible job with this soundtrack too. I mean not the kinda stuff you would pump up in your car, but listen to it in the movie and in it's context, it really is amazing. Eric Serra has a great gift and so does Luc, so put em together, and you have got a good movie at least. This film just takes a lil imagination, it's not just an action, or a romance, it's mostly everything just blended together. See this if ya get the chance, and get hooked on Luc Besson, he really does have a genius to his work.
