Gerry (2002)
Terrible, and extremely dull - potential spoilers
How this isn't in the bottom 200 of all-time is beyond me. There is little to no dialog throughout the movie and it has an extremely unrewarding ending. I don't need action to be amused when watching a film but when there's little dialog (with most of it unmoving or amusing in any way) it's hard to see how anyone can rate this movie anything but poorly (let alone it averaging 6.x)! Literally nothing happens most of the time. How it took three writers to write this piece of garbage is troubling to say the least.
It's a shame it was so bad as I was looking forward to it as Damon and Affleck Jnr are decent actors.
Green Street (2005)
Bad movie, Football factory was much better (and came out first!)
*** CONTAINS SPOILERS *** Pretty bad movie. Like most movies coming out these days, watchable but not much better than that. Elijah Wood was a terrible choice for the main role. They couldn't pick someone physically too big (had to be intimidated by the hooligans) but come on - Mr. Lord of the Rings?
The accents were pretty bad and the whole hooligans thing is probably a novelty for a lot of non-soccer/football fans. And for there to be so many deaths was a little over-the-top in trying to ram home their point that hooliganism is 'really bad' and is likely to end in serious injury/death!
Football factory was much better (dramatically and definitely with its humour). I can't believe both movies' teams focus is on the same rival (Millwall), particularly with Hooligans coming out not too long after Football factory. Both movies share pretty weak plots but that's understandably difficult to avoid with the lack of depth of all the characters in both films.
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Horrible movie. Depressing and much longer than it needed to be
**** Spoilers INSIDE ****
Horribly depressing movie.
The movie labours on some uninteresting happenings whilst dwelling on some characters we don't particularly care for (Swank's character being the only real exception).
Now whilst I don't need a movie to be upbeat to enjoy it (I liked Mystic River), Million dollar baby just gets sadder and slower as it goes. And like nearly every other Clint Eastwood movie it was much longer than it needed to be. Eastwood should stop acting as his performance was one-dimensional and unconvincing. I don't understand how this movie scored any awards or has scored so highly on IMDb.
Suicide, the Comedy (1998)
Good film, with some funny and poignant moments
This movie dragged on at times, but contained some funny scenes, as well as some meaningful lines. It has a strange feel about it, with an English writer going through the motions whilst living in the States.
Stag (1997)
A poor film, littered with has-beens
This film is poorly executed, and has a very B-grade plot. With practically all of the movie being shot in the one location, this becomes even more noticable. There are a lot of actors whose respective careers are in the gutter, and their performances don't do anything to help their causes (eg: Andrew McCartney, Kevin Dillon, Mario Van Peebles, Taylor Dayne etc). How John Henson can criticise and mock people each week on Talk Soup after his role and performance in this movie is beyond me.
Aside from all this, I did watch the whole made-for-video movie, and there were some interesting moments. However, the ending is most unsatisfactory, and I'd only recommend watching this if it's on TV late at night (up against infomercials) - like I did.
