Hai to gensô no Grimgar (2016)
Don't watch is escape from reality is what you looking for
There is a reason I watch Isekai/Game anime. I speaks to me as gamer, and I see it as way to somewhat escape the reality. Permanent death does quite the opposite thus the my low rating from. I didn't mind slow pace, introspected, and clearly fillers. This devastating drama is what I least need in escape anime. Despite how decent the show was otherwise, this drastic event killed the show and it was rightfully not renewed.
The animations are ok, though sometime the watercolor painted backgrounds seemed on the weaker side.
Without the death and drama, I might have rating it 7 or 8, but as it stands 4 is what I feel it's worth overall.
Steins;Gate (2011)
Warning: Clichés ahead
Yes, I know what some series are purposefully slow in beginning due to character introductions and world building, Expanse comes to mind, but I simply can't force myself to keep wasting any more free time (of very little I do have) to watch this drivel. Main character "Mad" scientist is seriously annoying. The sidekick girl character has way too clichés and too low of a profile. The "Haker" - probably only relatable and real character does very little to add to this boredom fest.
Yes, it maybe somewhat unfair to rate only 1.5 episodes but this isn't my first time trying to watch this series and every time I give up. It may develop into this amazing story nearly everyone here raving about and well worth it's high praises and scores, or it could simply be internet's biggest troll prank. I'm not sure which one is it.
I won't know. At least not now. I'm moving on to something more approachable and interesting.
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (2019)
Uneven
Season 1 is great and somewhat new approach to the Isekai/video games genre (similar in concept to SAO), but Season 2 is very uneven at best. Half season full of plot holes and bad CGI, and second half of S2 feels like a whole new season, but creativity and originality is taken far back seat, and I'm being very polite about it.
S1 - 9/10
S2 - 6/10
Feel free to skip the very last episode of S2 as it's adds nothing of value. Basically it's collection of few cut scenes from S2. Nothing more.
Travel Man: 48 Hours in...: The Basque Country (2022)
2 minutes and 20 seconds - Is how long I was able to stand it
00:02:20 is exact timestamp where I had to turn it off and disable any future DVR programming. Richard Ayoade had his own shtick. I don't know Joe Lycett here across the pond but my gut feeling is that should have his own. Trying to copy Richard's looks hugely ridiculous on the small screen.
Also making a show where extremely condensed format of spending only 48 hours (actually probably closer to 30h worth of timeline shown) in one city, barely shows off it's noticeable places. Trying to shove TWO cities in same format doesn't make the show twice as good, but twice as bad.
It's basically after Richard left, creator throw everything at wall desperate that something sticks.
I wish best of luck to this show and Joe, but it wasn't so bad even with Chris Evans at Top Gear - and that was worse that actual Titanic sinking.
Wheeler Dealers (2003)
Slowly down the drain +1
I'd echo review from 16 April 2021 by cjbiesbrouck
Seasons 1-12 with Ed were masterpieces - 8/10
Ant period was somewhat watchable, mechanical repair time reduced and Ant presentation was WAY over the top too often.
I'd still rate seasons 13-16 generously 6/10.
Now with Season 17/2021 with Marc as new mechanic, while nothing wrong with Marc - he's extremely knowledgeable car ENGINEER, the show is hugely let down by Brewer hoarding basically 60 to 70% of show time (I'm not exaggerating)
I don't want to see extended (fake) negotiations nor whatever little mechanical or crafting attempts Mike wants to show.
Bring back old format and ratings will return.
So far I've seen two episodes in season 17 and my current show rating for this new season is 2/10.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)
I'm unfortunately have to join the long list of Omega haters
Three things greatly pull this otherwise great show down and they all related to Omega.
1) I don't know if Michelle Ang is greatest NZ voice actress, but I for one can't stand her annoying voice. Her accent isn't cute, it's unfitting from any possible logical angle. If anything at least replace her first.
2) Young "girl" child as part of a crew of basically rough equivalent of a Delta Force team? In what possible universe does what make any sense?
3) I don't care if she/he/it/they. I have ZERO issues with LGBTQ+. I have close gay friends. Everyone deserves the right to be happy or/and miserable together. But we are talking about YOUNG CHILD here. Maybe worth waiting at least until mid to late TEEN years to start discussing these HARD topics??
It really saddens me to write these harsh lines, because without "Omeghaa" the show otherwise is really good. Episode 1 was awesome! The crew kicks ass and have plenty of their own issues to deal with.
Carnival Row: The Joining of Unlike Things (2019)
I know I have to suspense the believe...
I mean Ferries, Pucks, Centaurs etc.. but the fight between two fully capable of flight creatures mid flight fight holding on each other legs to prevent fall, then falling down just doesn't make ANY sense whatsoever.
Top Gear: Episode #27.3 (2019)
The last straw for me
Was the yobbers ganging up on Chris to offload his car. This is not funny. This is not comradery. This is pure bullying.
I don't mind having less car reviews or more vaguely car entertainment, but this season is misses the mark worse than Blockbuster refused to purchase Netflix. Several times.
Until they change the crew (presenters AND people in charge of show content) I'm taking a break from this show.
Top Gear: Episode #27.1 (2019)
Decent effort, but so much wrong...
Big issue #1:
There is only 1 actual automotive journalist left. Two other new hosts are "comedian" and pro sports player.
Issue #2:
The accents - Yes, While it's maybe totally acceptable for British TV show hosts to lack clear pronunciation, having local dialects and speak borderline slang on what used to be #1 fact based TV show in THE WORLD, but clearly the producers "forgot" to consider global appeal or the lack of it then international audience needs subtitles AND a help from urban-dictionary to understand new hosts.
Issue #3:
The "Chemistry" or nearly complete lack of it - the forced frat-boy house abuse isn't a chemistry. It's cringe-fest of abuse. It's not funny, just sad. It could only be possibly funny if you're a bully by nature. The thick sweater gag to be worn in one of the hottest places on Earth was cruel. I could see Harris in very poor condition.
Issue #4:
Ethiopia - I get - it's unusual sight for people who barely ever even left the tiny island near European continent, but lets be frank, it got nothing on neither Columbia,Myanmar, or Vietnam. Basically a Nevada but in Africa, but the amount of praises on the landscape was dully overwhelming.
Issue #5: Car tests -just plain idiotic. nuff said.
Tl;Dr: It's still beats any Chris Evan episode and I don't miss "celebrity" guests.
So overall 5/10 with score potential to improve if they actual develop real chemistry at tone down the abuse.
Top Gear: Episode #26.2 (2019)
End of current crew is known and they no longer care
TukTuk Part was silly and not very entertaining, despite jaw-dropping scenery.
"Celebrity" guest , white rapper goes by name Prof Green I was painfully long, boring and not funny.
3/10
Leblanc is leaving.
Rory Reid is forced to leave back to extra gear only
and an awesome Chris Harris is to become 3rd, a clear demotion from his current 2nd position on the show.
They all know it and no longer give a crap about the show.
Endeavour: Pylon (2019)
Bullocks!
The slightly timing attribution to song release month or type of medical supplies.
What's wrong with you people???!!
It's absolutely bloody awesome TV and I am very much annoyed how short this season is.
Please, Please, Please! Make bloody 6 or more episodes per series.
Wheeler Dealers: 1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth (2017)
Big step backward
I can see why Ed China decided to leave. Velocity Car fixing scenes are now much less detailed. Like fast forward with edgy music.
Imo new mechanic Ant so far seems as good replacement as Chris Evans was to top gear. Minor spoilers ahead: During purchase and clearly fake negotiations, Mike had identified a serious issue with catalytic converter. That part was never again discussed, which particularly weird since in CA failure of cat. converter is likely automatic failure of states inspection. Instead $5k was spend on design element which provided very humble improvements.
Show is still mostly watchable, but without Ed big part of charm is missing.
American Gods: Git Gone (2017)
Meh.
Wow. I can't believe how drastic of the turn, this show took with it's fourth episode. The Tagline says it's exploring Laura life, relation and death. And it does. Literally. It's all it does for full hour. I rated it 5/10, because it's not all doom and gloom. There are comedy relief and even few sprinkles of decent acting, particularly from Chris Obi. Laura charactecter is not very believable, nor their love story. For me the show started in about last 5-10 minutes. The rest was fluff, I could live without and which be easier condensed into 10-15 minutes tops.
p.s: I don't think I have any spoilers, but rather be safe than sorry.
Wheeler Dealers: 1916 Cadillac V8 (2016)
What just happened??
I'm generally big fan of the show, including recently show became less real, much more scripted and some builds are obvious prearranged - aka not risk taken by Mike here. But this episode takes the crown as far as cluster freak goes. (Spoilers) It's cool to let Ed pick the car this time, but obviously Ed made a very unusually horribly wrong choice. Bad Money keeps on getting poured over good money spent on parts/another car - always a big risk - yet the whole rush could be explained only with desire to make the historic race from Paris to Pekin, which they DO miss after all. For such cliffhanger episode - what a way to complete the series for this year.... or not. (End of Spoilers)
Please bring back original format - I episode - one complete story and in most cases, a happy ending = aka profit.
Limitless (2015)
It's a shame
What started as a pretty decent, mind you not great, show at early pilot quickly turned out to be very old and tired formula - Police/FBI consultant. Still, I was willing to accept the clichés and go with show - see where it's headed, but unfortunately now - S01E09 - it seems be going one place - down the drain. I don't know what happened or why - but my feeling is that show producers already know they have been canned, but required by contract to finish the season so they just completely gave up on trying to make good show and just having "fun". I should've guessed from S01E08 - ala Ferris Bueler episode.
I feel so upset they had canceled "Forever" - that was an awesome show!
Murdoch Mysteries (2008)
Just Skip it
Just do yourself a favor and skip it. Don't even continue reading the rest of this review. just close the tab and move on.
You're still reading? OK - you've asked for it - As we are (me and Wifey) coming close to end of finishing the long marathon of GREAT detective shows such as Poirot, Miss Marple, Morse and most recent one Endeavor, I noticed this show recommended somewhere on the net. Wow, I thought - Show I never heard about and has great IMDb ratings with plenty of voters.
I followed with watching the first episode of the first season and I gotta say nothing prepared me for this amateur hour. I think my local high-school kids could probably do better acting. Not to mention bottom of the barrel story and absolutely awful editing hack job.
On the acting - Jonny Harris plays the role of Constable George Crabtree is one the worse offenders - he's like the kid which do magic tricks and gets applaud from close family, decides that skills set is sufficient to play at big time TV shows.
On the storytelling - nothing prepared me to sheer incompetence of story writers - it's full with ancient clichés and holes in the story line. Every single thing is shewed thought - not letting a single chance for viewer for think for themselves based on facts and evidence.
On the editing - BURN THESE "DRAMATIC" PAUSES !! This is not supposed to be early 20th century CSI. They are god awful
In short, if you're still reading this - do yourself a favor and go see a good British detective TV show. Sorry Canada - you're not even close on this one.
Surface (2005)
Another great way to kill time and gray cells
Totally non-original show takes base in sea monster hoaxes and develops those to extreme levels of boredom. Creators of the show in their desperate attempts to make this show address all ages make a soup of weak special effects (which in part reminded me of FutureMark 3Dmark :), teenage stories (cacoon, ET) and adult family/marriage issues. For most part mediocre acting. Special effects minimal and made on home 3dmax. I saw entire 1st DVD of 1st season. Acting: I totally don't believe NSA agent trying to cover up, the marine biologist trying to fight and looses every single time and looses more and more - degree, job, her research and forced to work as a in low budget work and yet still trying to prove her point - sorry no buyers here. Scifi fans stay out! For all others looking for a way to kill time - all welcome.
