Gary Burghoff played Walter "Radar" O'Reilly in both the movie and the television show. He was the only main character actor to be in both versions. It is also interesting to note that the two actors to play Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake - Roger Bowen (movie) and McLean Stevenson (television series) died within a day of each other. Roger Bowen died on February 16th, 1996 of a heart attack one day after McLean Stevenson (who also died of a heart attack). Also there was three actors who played "Trapper" John McIntyre. They were Donald Sutherland (movie), Wayne Rogers (television series) and Pernell Roberts (Trapper John M.D.).

Several sources have stated that Jack Webb really wanted to be a Los Angeles policeman. The height restrictions of that time period kept him from qualifying for his badge. It also has been said that "Dragnet" is the closest to reality of all the police shows ever made.
