The Patriot (2000)
As close to the Revolution as you're likely to get
I went to a showing or "The Patriot" expecting another summer blockbuster in revolutionary regalia. What I found was a stunningly acted, disturbingly real story about the reality of war and the destruction it brings. I encourage everyone to see this beautiful, haunting movie. I especially encourage younger people to go and see this movie. The patriotism so powerfully demostrated by our fathers and forefathers seems to be lacking in this generation. We know nothing of war and its hardships, and are hard pressed to understand that the rights we take for granted were bought by the blood of Americans just like us. I am so grateful to the people who led me back to my history. Movies like these bring history to life for millions of people, myself included. "Seeing" the revolutionary war and the people who fought it helps humanize the sparse accounts in history books. I urge you all to discover history, let these accounts bring your imagination to life. Understand what freedom meant to the men of the continental army.
Summer Stock (1950)
As Always, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly make Magic on the screen.
It is obvious that Judy Garland was having some trouble while making this movie. Her weight varies from scene to scene, and some of her vocals are not as strong as they might have been. Well I have one thing to say about that, she's got a heck of left than I ever hope to have. This woman is amazing. It's frustrating to me that this movie is commonly ignored because of some minor points. Gene Kelly's performance is at it's peak. His famous dance using no props except a newspaper and a creaky floorboard is creative genius. As far as I'm concerned this movie boasts some of the creative highlights of their careers.
I'll See You in My Dreams (1951)
The story is a charming romance, and Doris Day's character is sweet, but also aggressive. She doesn't let anyone push her around, especially her husband.
The first time I saw Doris Day, was in "Pillow Talk". Since then I've grown very fond of her quirky personality on screen. She brings any role she plays to life before your eyes. This romantic comedy is a great example of her ability to make you care for a character's welfare. You want more than anything for she and her husband to succeed. Doris Day lights up the screen, as always.
Shag (1988)
Despite it's title, "Shag" is a great film for kids as well as adults. Perfect for the occasional slumber party or family movie night.
I found the movie "Shag" to be uplifting and fun. It's a great coming of age film, in that all the characters make discoveries about themselves. But don't be fooled by this description, "Shag" is a fun, entertaining film that shows the situation in a delightful, endearing manner. This movie should be grouped in with the likes of "Pretty in Pink", "Can't Hardly Wait", "Sixteen Candles", and "she's All That". This movie is definitely a favorite of mine as far as the teen movie goes.
