The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
Buy 1 get 3 for free
This is not a movie, it's 4 shorts welded together, like some bizarre art project made by some teenagers of a mechanic school.
At the beginning, its 'Max the guardian of a baby', then Snowball just showed up and started his own storyline, 'Snowball the Super Hero', you have to love the way the movie switches between stories, there is no transition, or hand-over, it just cuts brutally to a totally unrelated story; 5 minutes later, when I forgot Max and remembered who the hell this bunny is, the movie jumped back to Max, but to start a new story, 'Max goes to a farm'; then Gidget gets her own story after that, 'Dog Undercover'...
Well somehow all these stories do come together for the finale, I really won't say that the writers were given enough time to weave all the material together.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Pity it lost its momentum half way
I love The Cabin in the Woods, but this one is kind of a disappointment.
This one has been solid in the first half, came to its peak at the three POV narrations of the first gun shot.
After that, the story slowed down, and it turned to a setup of a Tarantino climax, except there wasn't a real climax, instead we saw an presentation of why only Tarantino can make those scenes: you need a writer to create intensive dialogs, and actors like Samuel Jackson and Christophe Waltz to carry it. El Royale has neither. So it felt the story came to a swamp after Thor showed up at the table.
Then drowned.
Chase (2010)
7 years later, I still think about those villians
It has been 7 years and hundreds cop shows, and somehow I still remember this show.
The best part of this marshal show is the prey; I still remember most of fugitives, every villain in the show has unique story, and the show always add one scene to reveal there was some humanity left in the monster: The wanna-be-marshal caught two real criminals; the robber/killer let his daughter go; even the serial killer who pretended to be paralyzed showed mercy to the family he met in the woods...
I guess the lesson here is that it's impossible to create 20 different colorful villains per year, the show seemed run out of gas after 10 episodes, the villains became less interesting and the show got cancelled.
Coco (2017)
The unique Pixar feel, hope this is not the last
This is the kind of movie that only Pixar could make, way above all the 3D talking animals from other brand, up to the level of Inside Out, Up and Wall-E. Spectacularly brilliant. I went to the cinema with my kids, and my 10 year old daughter has been literally kept on edge of her chair when the story reaching its end. However there is one little thing that bothers me, before the feature film, there is a short intro by the filmmakers, they showed a shot of the dead world, and explained that this short has 20 millions light source on 10 millions buildings (or the other way around). I know Pixar/Disney is the vanguard of CG technologies, good for you. But I don't care, that's not what make me drove to the cinema in a snowy night, that's not what kept my kid on the edge of her chair. It's not the 10 million lights shot made Coco great, story and story telling is the unique magic, a great movie is not about the tech or the money, it must also have a soul.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Sadly hilarious
The whole promotion campaign for this movie is misleading, the posters are colorful, the trailer is fast-paced, while the actual movie is dark and slow. It's OK to make a dark and dull Sci-Fi, I like Moon and Villeneuve's Arrival. And Villeneuve did delivered some interesting elements to Blade Runner, especially on virtual women. However he failed on story telling, even lost focus along the way, ran out of time (in a 2 and half hour movie), then jumped to a quick conclusion. The major problem with Blandrunner 2049 is Harrison Ford, this is the third time he picked up a role from his prime age, the third time he got a long lost child... And all three franchises are Sci-Fi at some level. It's ridiculous to see the same face in the same situation saying the same dialogue for the third time, and this situation and dialogues are TV soap clichés to begin with. I know that no one in Hollywood give a %$%$ to character or screenplay anymore, but I did hope a little more imagination from a legendary Sci-Fi brand.
Dunkirk (2017)
Would you call Saving Private Ryan 'Normany'?
I found that he title is misleading, this movie has no interest in presenting the Dunkirk retreat, rather than focusing on three groups. In other words, if you are not interested in World War II, you probably won't understand what's going on the whole time. It's like to call Saving Private Ryan 'Normany'; or Deer Hunter 'Vietnam War'.
Friends: The One with the Lesbian Wedding (1996)
My favorite episode
I have watched the show (especially the first 4 seasons) maybe a dozen times over all these years, and this is one of my favorite.According to some books about story and characters, most good story should also dig deeper and deeper into a character. The show began with Ross' divorce due to his wife Carol realized that she is lesbian. And Ross has always been kind of hostile and competitive against the other woman, Susan. While in this episode, Ross stepped in when Carol's parents refused to come to the wedding and give away Carol to Susan, and Susan invited him to dance at the wedding. That's the original Ross, boyish but sweet deep inside. It's a pity that they have kind of ruined this character later to keep the show running longer.
Run All Night (2015)
The scene that ruined the whole movie for me
I enjoyed the movie, this is probably the best mob movie I have seen in a few years. However, the more I love this movie, the more I hate one scene in it. Which is where Ed Harris ran away from Nesson in the climax shootout. Liam Nesson and Ed Harris have done a great job from the beginning, they are a pair of mob friends with a long history and long list of bodies, and probably the only ones left from a gang. when one's son went after the other's, they were dragged into it, and when Liam Nesson killed Ed Harris' son, there is no way out for them, as Ed Harris said "I have nothing to go back to". My favorite scene is the one before the Climax: Nesson called Harris cross the street from Harris' HQ and made a final peace offer, Harris turned down without a second of hesitation. Then, right after this great scene, he ran away from Nesson... This ran away has ruined not only Ed Harris' role, but also Nesson's 30 years' friendship/relation with him, plus the value of his action: how heroic could it be to chase off a coward like this?
Shark Night 3D (2011)
Surprisingly good 3D quality
The story is the same old tale: a bunch of kids went to the field, get hunted by some big bad thing, knocked off one by one, (usually the latino or black dude went first). What made Shark Night different, is the underwater 3D effect, water splashing, shark and dog swimming(BTW, the dog was the only character I worried about). After I googled it, it appears that this one was shot with real 3D camera. It's a shame that they put all this great equipment and technology to shoot such an old cliché. I won't recommend this movie to horror movie fans, but if you want to see some decent 3D clips, this one is the best of summer 2011, where so many fake-3D ended the 3D mania Avatar started.
Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)
what a waste
According to the filmmakers, it's very hard to get permissions to get in the cave, and harder to shoot a movie inside. The drawings are great, impressive, and it is necessary to show it in 3D, actually this is the first movie which really need to be 3D since AVATAR. But the narration is simply awful, my impression is: they didn't have enough footage to make a feature length movie, so they put everything into it, the shaking camera panning on the crew, the long boring lecture from a french computer guy(no offense to you, dude), some ridiculous mimic of ancient hunting skills, even a sequence from Fred Astaire movie...They should cut it into a 45 mins show in history channel, period.
Robin Hood (2010)
It's NOT a Robin Hood movie
The only reason this is not the worst Robin Hood movie ever, is that this is not a Robin Hood movie. It's a fake history movie about the aftermath of the dead of Richard Lionheart, with a lot of boring dialogs, or nonsense, and a super ridiculous final battle. Half of the movie is about the daily life in 12e century England, there are many solid details, although some of them are wrong, for example, knights don't wear armor everywhere, they carry them on horses when traveling. The other half is a lame remake of the old war movie SOMMERSBY, sorry I forgot the name of the original french version. Anyway, there is nothing about Robin Hood except the name. Ridley Scott's passion about British history is his business, but how did he get all those money to make this c**p?
Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009)
Worst movie of the year
The trailer editor of the movie is amazing, he fouled me into thinking this is an unoriginal but funny holiday comedy. Actually, the movie is not funny at all, I've never smiled once during the whole séance. The pace was too slow, it can be easily cut off 30 minutes. All the gigs are old and not funny. The two about bear and horse are OK, but even those two are not funny in the movie with bad begin or end lines. The movie is so bad that during the last hour I actually wanted the killer won and kill both of the Morgans. PS Don't get me wrong, I was not dragged into theater by a woman, I'm a shallow movie goer and always a fun of Hugh Grant comedies(I felt Two Weeks Notice was very funny), I volunteered to go alone.
Valkyrie (2008)
What a stupid hero...
The problem with this movie is that, Tom Cruise tried too hard to make Stauffenberg a Hollywood hero.
All credits of the July 20th plot went to this guy. According to the movie, he is the one who get the reserve army idea, he is the one who persuaded all the other members, and he even became the commander of the whole thing at the end...
First of all,I don't believe a colonel can maneuver a bunch of generals in 40s' Germany.
Secondly,if Stauffenberg was the key man of the plot, then I must say it's the stupidest plot ever: what if something went wrong and Stauffenberg dead at the Wolf Lair? The Queen never go to some pacific island to hunt evil scientist, she let Bond do it.
I'm not a WWII specialist, if all these things really happened in real history, then I will give Mr. Hitler some credits for kicking all these generals into reserve army. These guys answers to a colonel and unable to set up a reasonable assassin plan, how could them be useful on the Eastern front?
Ying xiong (2002)
A tribute to Chinese Dictators
As a Chinese, I can not believe the movie got a rate this high in U.S. And I don't think you guys get it. It's not fantasy, the Emperor in it is the first guy to conquer the whole land of China, to do that, his army left a lot of bloodshed. A couple of times, they buried hundreds of thousands people alive. That's why there are so many killers aiming him, they want revenge. But in the movie, this chinese Hitler became the good guy, his side is the good, the killers are all wrong. So according to me and a lot of chinese moviegoers, Hero is a tribute to the chinese dictators behind the Tian-An-Men massacre. Its main idea is that it's everyone's duty to sacrifice himself for the emperor a.k.a the dictator. If you guys love the combat, give it 6 or 7, but don't give it a 10.
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
This movie should be called The Color of Money
No women,No kids,no smelling.
Everybody is full of fury and fear, the one who closed a deal can say anything to others' faces.
That's businessmen's life,that's what the movie about.
The script is amazing, the actor team is dream team.
If you are one of the company people, watch it.
Uprising (2001)
action scenes are too hollywood
A civilian step to four or five german soldiers with a handgun,he shoots with one hand while walking! Guess who won the the pistol vs machineguns duel? The civilians killed them all!Even a trained S.W.A.T man can not do that. This kind of stuff could be OK in a John Woo film, but is inacceptable in a half-documentary war movie, this kind of action scenes may be fun for some audiences but also ruined the whole movie.
Bedazzled (2000)
The biggest damage a bad actor can make to a movie.
The pilot is creative, the story is good, the details are not bad, but the actors in it are terrible. Brandon Fraser can only do some stunt man chased by mummies, Hurley is the dumbest devil in the movie history.
Hope Harrod Remis or some other director will remake this movie, it could be much better.
La grande vadrouille (1966)
The most popular foreign film in our country
The Chinese people saw this movie after the culture revolution, and this gave us the greatest laugh in a long time.
It's been replayed in theatres and TV in the last 20 years.
I know that many people on imdb are not french movie fans, but this one is absolutely the best comedy ever made.
Go find it, now!
Lat sau san taam (1992)
tiny details about the movie
As a chinese,I feel there are several details cannot be translated in english subtitles,so I write them out: 1 The undercover cop's name is lang, in chinese it means wave, and the godfather he shot is uncle Hai which means sea or ocean. 2 The open fight scene set is a cantonese teahouse not a bird market, where people have breakfast and chat, some people like take their pat birds with them. 3 the screenwriter died before the movie was released.
Pump Up the Volume (1990)
It's been a long time that a movie can drive me to sit down and write something out
The best movie I have seen in last year. It's been a longer time that a movie can drive me to sit down and write something out to share my feelings with everybody. Christian Slater as a teenager who moved from New York to a small town, he got problem to talk to people he wanted talk to. So he ran a private radio station with the name happy harry hard on. His show became pop among the students in his high school because he spoke up the pain and suffer to be a teen, the rage and untrust against the adults, and the very truth no one want talk about:we are not made perfect, living a perfect life is boring.Day by day, the teachers and Miss principle got more angry about the Harry guy, while Harry and his listeners went farer. I'm not a teen anymore, and I feel so regret that I haven't seen this film before. And it still reminded me of that old me, the kid who was so sensitive about everything in that world. However, this is not a perfect movie, the supporting actors, some big scenes and the principal role are bad, but who cares? Nothing is perfect, perfect is the most stupid word in the world. This movie is still a powerful with all the truth it talked about.I added it to my all time favorite collection with Fly Away Home,John Woo's The Killer ,Casablanca,Earning,Blue,Michael Collins,Age of Innocence and A French Woman. SO BE IT.
The Perfect Storm (2000)
movie for theater
It's the second time I feel a movie must be watched in a theater. ILM's special effect supervisor just made an ocean and an perfect storm in their monster computers. While I'm watching the movie, I know it's fake, but I still feel exciting and the last 60 minutes just kept me sitting on the edge of the seat.I feel very lucky that they show the subtitled version on the best theater in beijing. the price is pretty expensive for beijing people, but i think this movie really worth it.
La femme d'à côté (1981)
master piece
Truffaut knows who to tell a story on the screen, this is not a new story, I have seen one like this before in une femme francaise. But a big movie funs can feel better in this one, the way the scenes fade in and fade out,the deep-focus images, the music and the camera motions. I know many people don't like subtitled pictures, but this one is really worth to watch.
Glory (1989)
the story, the mood and the music score are so great
I watched this movie yesterday, it's been several months since last time I was excited by a movie. It's not a perfect war movie, the soldiers are too peaceful to a must-die mission, their bravery makes them seems a little unhuman to me. But the story, the mood and the music score are so great, there are several scenes that almost made me cry. Honestly, I don't feel Washington is so good, there is no bad boy look on his face, he talked like a big hero even if in the scene which he is blaming the poor black gentleman. But Mogan Freeman is really good, especially in the Pay Day scene.
