Born Into Exile (1997)
I Thought I was the only person who saw this....and liked it!!
I don't think I've seen this movie in like 3 years, when it debuted on TV. But its a movie that I havent forgotten. I remember feeling so depressed at one point during this movie and then happy the next. One of the better TV movies I've seen. I only wish I could see it again.
Se7en (1995)
Kevin Spacey stole the show!
I liked everything about this movie. It seemed like the pacing was particulary slow purposely to let the viewer think. But Fincher has created an excellent movie. I liked Pitt here, and Freeman was excellent as usual. But the one who steals the whole movie is the one and only Kevin Spacey. I cant tell you how much I love this guy. He is the best contemporary actor today. He should have gotten a supporting nod for this role. I can watch the scene at the end when there taking the killer to see the supposedly two dead bodies over and over again. Spacey just hypnotizes me when he speaks. He should get Best Actor this year for American Beauty...he was amazing there and he was amazing here!
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Powerfull and poetic!
I have to say that this movie was much more moving than "Saving Private Ryan". Nothing against SPR, it was an excellent movie. But, "The Thin Red Line" had much better performances and I felt like I knew these characters my whole life. The performances were better than SPR, the dialogue was better, direction was better. The only thing SPR had going for it was the opening battle sequence. The old man at the beginnig walking around the cementary with the two blondes in tight shirts was so cheesy. SPR will fade fast. Terrence Mallick has created a beautiful, poetic movie that will stay with me forever. Why the Academy didn't reckognize Jim Calviez"s performance is beyond me, he was amazing!
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Loved it the first time, bored by the third viewing.
I have to say that after watching this movie the first time, I totally enjoyed it. Second viewing was somewhat bored but still liked it. By the third viewing, I noticed it was too long, some scenes were boring and pointless and I"m sick of the male lead being 30 years older than the female lead. Nonetheless:good acting, good dialouge(for the most part), good direction, but after repeat viewing the movie doesnt hold its strength.
Fight Club (1999)
Intense, original, and unforgettable!
I dont know If I'm going to ever forget this movie. Fincher pushes every button imaginable to leave the viewer amazed. I found myself smiling for most of the movie, why? Because it was so smart! The parts where I wasnt smiling, I was cringing from some of the mind blowing scenes.
I loved everything about this movie. Helena Bonham Carter was amazing, Brad Pitt was in top form, I've always liked him. But most of all, Edward Norton, this guy is so pure in his acting. He was terrific and perfectly cast for the nameless narrator. Him and Kevin Spacey amaze me everytime I watch them. The ending to me was perfect. > ! Yep, I will never forget this movie! It's definitely forever etched in my mind. Sad thing is, no oscars will come of this movie, and thats shame. Fight Club to me is already a classic!
The Matrix (1999)
A sci-fi classic!
Some of the best visuals and editing in a film I have seen in a while. I expected a non-stop, action packed meaningless film before watching this movie. But after two viewings I got to realize how deep this movie really is. The biblical references were very interesting. Keaunu Reeves represented Jesus. The plot, though confusing, was orignal and intriguing. Cant wait for the sequels, may clear up some questions lingering in my head.
A Simple Plan (1998)
Suspenseful thriller with a weak story.
By no means was "A Simple Plan" a bad movie, in fact it was a better than average movie. Yes the plot was weak, but what Sam Raimi did was intensify it. The timings of the mood changes in the movie was genious. A complex movie, not even close. But a well told one. It was your typical perfect plan gone wrong but with pure emotion. I'm not a Billy Bob fan but he was amazing here, totally convincing.
Casino (1995)
Similar to Goodfellas, sure. But it was still excellent!!
Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies by far. Martin S. is up there with Kubrick and Stone as my favorite directors. When this movie first came out, I started to hear comparisons to Goodfellas. This got me very excited because I loved the film so much. I ended up loving this film almost as much as Goodfellas but no quite as much. Still, I love almost anything Marty does and here he succeeds in telling a wonderful story. I think its time for another Pesi-Deneiro-Scorcese-Pileggi reunion...please!!!!!
JFK (1991)
Stone is a master at crafting his movies to keep you watching!
Oliver Stone is at his best when dealing with a major political event or person in his movies. Historical as well. Consider his three best movies in my mind, "Platoon", "Nixon", and "JFK". These are his masterpieces, movies flawless in its beauty. Both "Nixon" and "JFK" were shot and made similarily. But I liked "JFK" just a bit more. I was so intrigued by this movie. The conspiricies, cover ups, plots, twists, acting, directing, absoutely everything. As a 17 year old teenager I was very clueless as to all the specifics to Kennedy's murder. But this movie opened my eyes, I became very intersted in his death after watching this movie. I got the same feeling after watching "Nixon" (which was absurdly overlooked by the academy that year for best picture). Stone is great when making movies about america's history. "U-turn" is his only flaw this decade. "Nixon", "JFK" and "NBK" prove his excellence as a great filmaker. I have high hopes for "Any Given Sunday"
