Legal Criminals (2004)
Good job.
Given to the fact that this is a low-budget film I must admit I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it at a private screening. It's humorous, witty and well crafted. Perhaps Mr. Einarsson should remake it someday into a feature. Who knows. It's a winner! The director has obviously learned a great deal of film-making since his debut hit the cinemas three years ago and he has become a more focused storyteller. He knows that a good story is essential for a film of this particular genre and he doesn't spend too much time in worrying about the details, which has it pros and cons, obviously. The cinematography is at a time flawed but good editing and sound design along with good casting make up for it. I hope to see more films from Mr. Einarsson in the future.
Reykjavík í öðru ljósi (2000)
Interesting but...
Hrafn Gunnlaugsson has for many years considered himself as an artist (even though some might disagree) and has now visualized how Iceland´s capital might look if he had anything to say. Well, the idea is not bad,and in some cases his ideas are interesting, but sadly, the film can´t measure up because of poor visual effects and the author quite monotonic narration.
Sporlaust (1998)
Be warned.
This is the laimest production in the Icelandic film history. It's so bad that it makes you wonder if the filmakers should make movies at all. The screenplay is so bad, that instead of being interesting, it's hillarious. It´s incredible that a grown man could ever come up with something as stupid as the the screnplay is; The plot dosen´t hold water, and it's obvious that the plot has gone without a trace. The director dosen't seem to know much about film making. The actors seem to be embarreshed, and the film's score is completly out of sync and it´s very poorly written. In short: Be warned.
Titanic (1997)
Take it to perfection.
Although visually stunning, the screenplay might have been written by a four year old. Cameron´s vision of mankind´s most famous disaster is simply to much. It´s not enough to take it to perfection from the visual point of view, you also have to frame it into a good story line, witch Unfortunately it is not so good. It´s childish, often embarrassing and usually boring.
Deliverance (1972)
The original and the first.
If this isn´t one of the best films ever made than I don´t know what a good film is. Forget all the rip-offs, this is the one. Although being nearly 30 years old, it dosen´t show. It´s one of the few timeless films that will last forever.
Ungfrúin góða og húsið (1999)
A good film.
A good film making with good acting and screenplay. I must say that director Guðný Halldórsdóttir has improved her style and ambition since her last work appeared. It was a good idea to let actors speak in their own language, for after five minutes or so, you get used to it.
Agnes (1995)
Quite OK
This could have been a much better film than it really is, for the simple fact only that it does not seem to have any outlined purpose. It´s looks more like the film makers where making a collection of beautiful scenes filmed across Iceland, rather than telling a story. But still, quite o.k.
Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997)
One bad adaption.
It´s pretty obvious that director Bille August doesn't quite know how to handle screenplays. He never seems to be able to focus on a plot, but instead, he tries to create as many scenes as possible, regardless to the fact that the films become pointless and blurry.
Benjamín dúfa (1995)
The first Hollywood looking film.
The first and only Hollywood looking film from Iceland. Truly magnificent piece of work with great casting, sound, photography and editing. In all; this is how films should be done. Other Icelandic film makers should make a good example out of this one.
Börn náttúrunnar (1991)
Give me a break.
I´m sorry to say, but this film is one of the worst from Iceland. It has some of the most dumbest plot lines ever filmed, and everyone who has ever heard anything of Iceland knows that old people are not mistreated the way it´s portrayed in this flick. An Oscar nomination...give me a break. It would have been more believable to let Die Hard take place here than this film.
