Tennessee Champ (1954)
Love Finding a Hidden Gem on TCM
Love when you turn on TCM and find a movie you have never seen or heard of and has a bunch of actors you like and you have time to kill. This happened today. Was tired of the news nothing else was on so I turned on TCM and found a movie called "Tennessee Champ" almost turned it off thinking it was going to be a Mellow about the old south. But since I had the TV on for background noise I left it on for a few minutes saw who was in it There was Shelly Winters and Keenan Wynn two of my favorite actors so I started to watch it. It turned out to be a really good Boxing movie and a heart felt story about Faith and Sports. Maybe a little campy by today's standards but in a time when we don't have much in the way of a Faith Based movie it had a strong message. Highly recommend it if you get a chance to catch it.
Emergency!: 905-Wild (1975)
From a Son of a Animal Control officer
OK this might not have been the best of the best Emergency episodes ever made but knowing what Animal Control officers go through on their day to day work load this was close to some of the adventures my Dad had gone through working in the City. Of course he never met a Tiger or Lion other then those who played on the Detroit Home Teams. But other then that he did come across some interesting events where they had to rescue Cat's and Other animals in house Attic's and other wild animal you might be surprised to find in a Big City.
I liked seeing a Very Young Mark Harmon in only his third TV appearance I'm surprised that the writers of NCIS haven't made a In-Joke about the team going after a Tiger or other Animal would be a Wink at the followers of Mark Harmon saying see where he got his start?
Perry Mason: The Case of the Half-Wakened Wife (1958)
Was one of the better early Perry Mason
This as actually quite a good episode and was enjoyable to watch the twist and turns as you try to figure out Who Done It. As is normally the case in the early Perry Mason Episodes you are kept guessing till the very end. Something I have always enjoyed about this show. Some interesting added actors who never made it back to Perry Mason Land. The one I was shocked at was Claude Adkins in an early roll biggest surprise was here he was actually one of the Good Guys something he rarely played on TV or in the Movies. In the later years he would of been a good regular instead of John Anderson who we ended up getting but that is in my own Opinion.
Over all I give this episode 10 out of 10.
Perry Mason: The Case of the Grinning Gorilla (1965)
I liked this more then I should have.
I liked this more then I should have. Mainly the reason was it was a little more of a humorous turn. I agree with the other comments it was a little harder to follow and some unexpected twist and turns along the journey but that was what made it so fun at least for me. But the best surprise was seeing two of my favorite character actors in one episode Victor Burno and Gavin McCloud.
The other reviewers gave a good summery of the story plot and I wouldn't be able to add much more to what they already said.
One thing came out of this episode a new quest this summer while walking around Garage Sales and Flea Markets I want to find "Case of the Grinning Gorilla" the original Book.
Magnum, P.I.: Murder by Night (1987)
A fun Episode of Magnum PI
Not that they ever took themselves over serious on this show, but I always enjoyed the ones where they just had a Fun show that played with the style of the show.
You could tell that the regular actors where all having fun doing something other then their normal rolls and able to do a little stretching of their acting chops.
Two of the added bonuses to this show were the supporting cast of the Beautiful Jennfer Runyon playing the spoiled Rich Love Struck Girl and Henry Jones as the Butler.
The Mystery was a through back to the old Film's and dime novels of the 40's and did keep you guessing till the end. A nice time killer for the afternoon.
Sons o' Guns (1936)
Not Great but not the Worse Moves ever made.
I caught this the other day on TCM and decided to watch it and hope to be entertained for a few hours. I was happily rewarded. Where this might not be the Greatest Movie it had it's Moments where it was enjoyable and kept me wondering where it was going.
There was some interesting Silent Movie Moments which I enjoyed during the stage show in the Military Camp being my favorite Highlight.
Joan Blondell was Beautiful of course and her song and Dance Number was an Added bonus.
I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again or even think about Recording it just to watch it at a later date. But if I had the time I would keep it on in the background if I caught it again while I go about doing House Work or reading a Book.
The Sadist (1963)
So odd it was a good film
My first thought on this movie was "This was like a Bad Criminal Minds Episode without the main Regulars preformed by a Group of Underfunded High School kids in the Theater department." My Second thought was how did MST3K ever miss this movie? This had all the makings of a classic MST3K.
But then my over all thoughts on the film, But actually the movie wasn't that bad and it kept my interest right up to the end. Reading the trivia section on this movie lifted this up quite a bit in my final over all review. Spend some time with this movie if you catch it. I'll stick with the Criminal Minds comment but then it goes to prove how important the regulars are on the show.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Who Watches the Watchers (1989)
Let's keep twisting our self into pretzels to keep to the Prime Directive.
When I caught this the other day on TV it was the first time I had ever seen this story, I think this was the season I skipped for some reason. It wasn't a bad Story and for a NG: Star Trek it was above average.
But like many have pointed out this did have a anti religion slant and that bugged me. But what got me more saying WTF? Was the extent the crew went to keep to the Prime Directive. The crew twisted themselves into all sorts of pretzels just to keep their secret. There was more direct ways to get out of the situation, but then again if they did that the show would of lasted 10 minutes. Another problem was how our "hero" Riker acted halfway through the show, but then if he did act like a real hero the show would of ended 30 minutes into the story.
Atomic Train (1999)
so bad it was kind of good
Actually this movie isn't so bad for a Made for TV Action Movie. Of course everything was over the top and the acting was sub par. It was the type of movie that if it can go wrong it will. You keep asking yourself can anything go right for these People????? and then nothing goes right for them. It is just one of those movies you have to watch and let the mind wander and enjoy this movie is best watched if you have a big storm outside and you can't go anywhere so might as well sit back and have fun.
Of course there are plot holes you can drive a Steam Train Through. But what Made for TV movie doesn't. Some Charters are droped before the first half of the movie is over and you never see them again and you go through the rest of the movie wondering if they will ever show up again.
My biggest gripe of the movie is some of the actions of the Charters get them into the Problems they have. If only they follow the Rules or directions this movie wouldn't have had the same Ending it did. Just following the Rules would of caused the Train to have a happy ending.
But don't worry it is a Great time killer full of hammy acting and Cheap FX.
Always Leave Them Laughing (1949)
What a great FIlm
I came across this movie at 4am on TCM. What a Missing Gem of a movie. Unlce Milton Burl was at the top of his Form in this film. True like some comments have said the Skits were old even in "48" and Unlcle Milton used the skits on his Long Running TV show. I know this because I grew up watching him on Reruns. Too Bad someone doesn't bring this out on DVD it show cases a Classic Comic in his Prime would love to hear his Commentary on this Movie. By the everyone says this is Milton Burls only Movie. Have we already forgotten the Great "Mad Mad Mad Mad World"?????????? He did a great job in that movie as well but at a different point in his life.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
One of the Best Musicals in a long run
Just came home from seeing "The Phantom of the Opra" I have to say it is one of the Best Musicals I have ever seen as time goes by this will Rate up there with "Westside Story", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Guys and Dolls", and "Music Man" This was just a great movie all around. The story The Music and the Acting were all top notch.
I have been listing to the CD and Tape for the last 20 years of the Broadway Show but never had the Chance to see it on Stage. I was surprised at how what My Minds Eye has visioned as the Action to the Music was Repsented on Screen. Only thing I had wrong was the Chandlier I always thought it was earlier in the Story. But I guess I was wrong but that was OK It fit right in the Right place in the story.
Would of still like to take a Time Travel Machine and see Michael Crawford and Sara Brightman in the Lead Rolls But like seeing a Original Production of "Fiddler on the Roof" It just ain't meant to be.
I highly Recommend the Movie It will be an All time classic. ON a Personal Note what is with the Acadamy Awards for not giving this Movie a Chance at winning Best Picture or the Studio for not putting this out a few weeks sooner to be up for Best Picture this is so much better then "Chicago" which was a good Movie in its own way.
Even my Mom gave this a 10 but she is not a member of IMDb.
When this comes out on DVD it will be on my Top Shelf Movies.
Dusty's Trail (1973)
What's not to Like about this Show.
OK maybe this was not the Hight if Original TV back in the early 70's but I can remember this being on at a strange time like 7:30 on Saturday nights. I use to watch it and for a 9 year old this wasn't all that bad. But yet I did know that this was a Rip off of Gilligan's Island with the Writers just lifting Storys from Gilligan's Island and Putting them into the Old West.
I found this again while walking around a Discount store a few days ago and I picked up The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West just because I had Fond Memories of the show. Now I know why It didn't last but still Its better then some of the Garbage on TV now.
Maybe I am just looking for a show you can sit down and watch with your Kids and don't have to Worry about them asking you any Questions about Sex and why are those Two Guys Sleeping Togeather. This show came from a Better time; at lest in my View.
Take a chance and watch it with the Kids its not that Bad actually and its kind of Fun watching Bob Denver and Forrest Tucker Ham it up for the Screen. Try it you might like it.
The Godson (1998)
It wasn't that Bad
OK here's the deal Late Saturday Night went to the Video Store all the New Movies were Rented or I have Seen it and didn't like it. So I head to the Middle of the Store where the .50 movies are and I take my best shot and go for the Direct to Video Movies or some of the Oldies but Goodies. Its Kind of like Mystery Movie of the Week.
Here was this Movie on the Bottom Shelf called "The Godson" being that I am on a Rediscovery of "The Godfather" I picked it up and wasn't hopping for Much just something to kill a Saturday Night. The Plus it did have Dom Deloise and Roddney Dangerfield. I thought it would be fun to watch Comic Masters from the Hey Day of the Johnny Carson Tonight Show years.
What I ended up Watching was a Take off of The Godfather and all the bad Gangster Movies of the 80's and 90's a lot of the Jokes were really bad but then some of them were dead on drop down funny. By the middle of the Movie I stoped what I was doing and actually paid attention to the Movie and had a few good Laughs. I liked the Sides to the audiences that started to take place out of the Blue halfway through the Movie. Which was my Favorite Part I am a Sucker for the breaking the third wall on the stage or Screen.
OK it could of been a lot better Maybe play it straight and not go for the Low humor that the Movie went to at times. on the other hand some of the Jokes they could of worked more on such as the Mafia University. What a Great Idea they could of made the Movie on that with the same Results toward the End.
It was nice to see Roddney Dangerfield again A Comic Mastermind that is gone.
If you are still reading this and going on my Recommendation of seeing this movie or not I say give it a Shot if not this Give the Movies in the Middle of the Video Store a chance there are some gems. The Middle of the Video Store is Like a Box of Choclates You never know what you are going to get.
The Mountain (1956)
One of my All time Favorites
This is just one of those movies that never gets old. I love the movie Spencer Tracy is one of the best actors of all time. They just don't make them like him anymore. The action and the drama is top of the line. Go out and Rent this or watch it when it shows up on AMC or TCM or on your local TV station at 2 am when ever you get the chance. You will not be disappointed. This is one of those movies that could never be remade in todays Market. Just who could replace Spencer Tracy or even Rober Wagner. I don't know what else to say about a movie in which climbing a Mountain could keep you interested for 90 minutes. Just the bond between the Brothers is such a great story Enjoy the movie.
Son of Frankenstein (1939)
Here I thought I was losing my Mind
Just watched Son of Frankenstein for the First time in Many Years. Wow what a great movie Lots of fun considering that I watched Frankenstine and Bride of Frankenstine and Son of Frankenstine back to back to back. What classic Movies they are. Nothing that I didn't like in any of the Movies. Guess I will have to watch Young Frankenstine again because I did see where all the Elements of Young Frankenstien came from. Something I noticed that at least once in each Movie someone does Shout the Line "Its Alive". I also like the use of Black and White Think that would of helped the Movie "Van Helsing" a great deal. Nothing deep here in this post Just wanted to say my Piece what a great movie.
Van Helsing (2004)
Didn't really Expect to see an Oscar Winner.
When I paid my 6 bucks at the Ticket Window I was not really expecting to see an Oscar winner, and that is exactly what I got. What I got was an adventure movie that was not really all that bad and had enough to keep me entertained for the two hours.
I have been watching Frankenstine, Dracula, and Wolfman movies since I was a little kid. I did enjoy the movie even if it was Cheesy and at times Lame but then Half way through the movie I decided to just have fun and realise that You can't really take things too serious when Frankenstine Monster can quote The Holy Bible and is the smartest one in the Group.
It was fun though Grab a Big Bucket of Popcorn, A Tall Cold Soda sit back and enjoy the Movie.
