Natalie Portman. All is well.
12 May 2002
I was fortunate enough to see a preview screening of this movie. I am not a big star wars fan, in fact, i'm not a star wars fan at all. I do appreciate a good movie though. And this is a decent movie. The acting towards the beginning is adequate at best. I also found Anakin Skywalker to be rather dislikable for the first 30 minutes or so.

For me, this movie had two redeeming factors. One, Natalie Portman is amazing in it. If she wasn't in the movie, I would truly dislike it, because every other character is hideous. Ewan McGregor has a nasty looking beard throughout, and Hayden Christensen has some weird rat tails, and behaves somewhat awkwardly. Portman really smooths over the look, feel, and flow of the movie.

Two, Yoda is very likable in this one. He's not just some guy sitting on the sidelines making backwards comments. His character is vastly redeemed.

A few downright corny puns are to be expected from C3PO, and those are delivered.

I guarantee this movie is more popular that it is good, but that's always the case with Star Wars nowadays.

A great sound, a great look, and a great story.

I was into the movie right away. I've seen the other Coen movies, with the exception of Raising Arizona, and I've noticed that each of their movies has a color. Fargo is gray/white, Lebowski is bright orange, and this movie is a pleasant yellow.

The bright pleasant qualities of this movie start right away. Soon the look is accompanied by the great, great music. It's the old folk sound, the kind of music that was written during a time when music was enjoyed as a part of day to day life. Enjoyed by everyone, chain-gangs, church choirs, and even prison escapees.

Now, about the prison escapees. I don't know what crime their characters could have possibly committed, as they are a very very friendly group of guys. Clooney is fantastic, completely nailing his role.

Go see this as soon as possible. I believe that it can be enjoyed by anyone at some level. For some reason, the theater I was in was full of old ladies and old men, and they loved it.

You'll love it too, I promise. I was compelled to get my hands on the soundtrack right away.

Being pretty good.

This is what happens when Spike Jonze, Michael Stipe, and John Malkovich get mixed together.

This isn't a Cusak film, and it certainly isn't a Diaz film. Usually they have roles in a very personality-filled characters. Their personalities meant nothing in this one. Nobody's personalities meant anything. This wasn't a 'character' movie.

That's obviously what made it different. It didn't rely on the crutch of having a clear antagonist and protagonist that 99 percent of films use.

As far as good acting goes, it doesn't really matter. I wouldn't say there were any remarkable performances, but like I said, it wasn't that type of film.

You gotta see this one, you'll know what I mean.

And when you walk out of the theatre, you'll pay particular attention to how you move.
