Godzilla (1998)
Again...?
The only thing really startling about this film is that they could be so predictable. Strong strains of Jurassic Park-type ideas were used without any attempt at even a thin veil of originality.
Plot twists were more reminiscent of lazy half spirals as it plummeted to earth in a hurry. The CGI effects were okay but seemed to be done in an effort to distract the viewer from the lack of substance.
For a film of this price it's a bad story with even worse execution: 4/10
City of Angels (1998)
Better than I expected
Not the usual sort of movie I go in for but thought I'd give it a shot.
As expected the acting wasn't great and the story line was a little predictable but I liked some of the concepts. Some of the ideas combined with the cinematography and music seemed to work (especially on the women in the audience).
I would probably have given this a 7 on its merits but it struck a chord with me personally so ended with 8/10
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Sci-fi + B-Grade... just as planned
A good example of a B-Grade movie made on purpose. Very bad lines and appalling jokes. Not an intellectual film (unless you like tearing simple things to shreds) nor does it have great effects, acting or scripts.
In the right frame of mind however (not expecting too much and in the mood for mindless frivolity) this film is quite entertaining in an childish-adult sort of way. Some lines seem to stick with you after it is all over.
Still, it IS only a B-Grade and not the best example: 7/10
The Matrix (1999)
FX for effect...
I saw it. I liked it. I saw it again... and again.
One of the beset things about this film is the use of its visuals. The effects are not overdone but are executed in a manner that accentuates the mood in an extremely appropriate way.
Plot has a couple of good twists and some of the actors' performances are appropriate for the genre (I wouldn't say Oscar material though).
Not perfect for me but, oh, so close with 9/10
Fist of the North Star (1995)
Not very impressed...
Saw this was on by accident on cable and decided to watch it (having already seen the anime film of the same name, which I enjoyed).
Mistake... BIG mistake.
The violent content probably would preclude younger viewers from seeing it and yet they would possibly be the only ones able to appreciate the simplicity of the plot. The people in the film (I refrain from calling them actors) should watch out for termites their acting is so wooden.
I didn't actually become ill so I gave it 2/10.
