Little Voice (1998)
Predictable, cliched, boring with 1 knock-out performance
This was so boring my husband left the room after 15 minutes and after 30 minutes I fast-forwarded through large sections until I reached Jane Horrocks' absolutely knock-out performance before an audience.
A great cast did its best but the movie was so horribly cliched and predictable it was exhausting to try to watch.
It's sort of a non-event to hear someone imitating other singers in a movie, because there is no way to tell if the performances were simply good lip-synching to previous recordings, that is, to tell who was actually singing, since all the singing would be dubbed in anyway.
An Angel at My Table (1990)
First sections very slow & disjointed, last section moving
Slow start, great finish. Since I saw this on video I fast forwarded through a lot of the first sections. In much of the first 2/3's many scenes were so quick and enigmatically done that I wasn't sure what was happening or who the people were. Many other scenes were so drawn out and slow I was bored. I don't know why I slogged through it, but once it got to the adult portion it was fascinating and very moving.
From what I have seen on Jane Campion movies, she is much more visual than dialogue-based. Wonderful to watch, but often confusing.
