Musa (2001)
One of the best
Having watched a good deal of different both Korean, Hong Kong and Japanese film, this one just stands out. The director manage to grasp the code of honor, like no other film before or after. "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" touches the subject, but nowhere near as spot on and powerful as this one does. Have you read "Lone Wolf and Cub", then you'll love this. Beautifully shot, exceptional music and very securely, daringly and well directed, this one stands out as the best film yet, to come out of the east.
Kat (2001)
It is utter crap
One of the worst films to come out of Denmark... EVER. Please, do not waste time nor money on this. Martin Schmidt has done two films previously to this "Sidste Time" which is excellent and "Mørkeleg" which is crap, but not as much crap as "Kat".
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Best adventure flick since Highlander
The 13th Warrior have been a long time in the making. But now that it is here, it is a joy to see. If you like, swords and horses, play warhammer or any fantasy RPG or if you are just waiting for The Fellowship of the Rings, then 13th warrior is defiently worth watching. I really enjoyed it. Even though it shows that a lot of matrial is missing (Dare we hope for a directors cut on DVD???) People accuse it for lack of plot, but that is not true, it is there, a lot of it has just been cut out, which of course hurts the film, but these kind of films are few and far between, so whenever one comes your way, you should see it. For all its problems, the film is really good. The sword fights are great and the armours and settings are so great that you lose youself completely in this universe. A great film.
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
Don't let the title fool you
You wouldn't think it would be possible to make an interesting film about chess. Here is the prof. This is thoughtfull, well acted (Especially by Kingsley and Fishburn) film, about a child who has a gift, and how the world around him reacts to that gift. The father who wants him to win and the mother who wants him to be who he is. It sounds like science Fiction, but it is not, it is about chess, and Steven makes is look fast, slick and good. This is the best movie of 1997. It is thoughtfull, it is heartwarming and it is intelligent.
Treat yourself, watch Searching For Bobby Fischer.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
$22.000???
Congratulations. Somebody finally made a movie more boring than Walter Hills "Last Man Standing". This is the biggest disappointment of the year. Everybody is talking budget, they only spend $22.000. Well, what the hell did they spend all that money on? There is nothing on the screen. Did they eat really well? Were they picked up in limos every day? This is the biggest mystery of this film, what the hell did they do with the $22.000??? I can´t wait to see the sequel. "Now with 40% more pitch black photo".
Don't see it, don't rent it. I you like films, then you wont like Blair Witch Project.
Last Man Standing (1996)
Boring
If you have trouble sleeping, rent this movie, I guarantee you 100% that you will fall asleep. A tacky remake of Yojimbo, which sounded interesting and could have been good, but is instead one of the most boring films to date. Avoid. Rent Yojimbo instead.
Copycat (1995)
Haunting
The best thing about this film is the soundtrack. This is truly the most haunting thing I have ever heard. I think it is Christopher Youngs best work to date. The script is intelligent, the cast is great. If you liked Seven, I think you will like this, it is more traditional than Seven, but it has that same feeling that you just can't shake off. Rent it, buy it (on DVD there is a really good audio commentary by the director). And if you like soundtracks, I'll guarantee you, that this will go into your collection.
Just the Ticket (1998)
Oscar to Andy
I love it. It just made me so happy watching it, and you can tell that Andy Garcia had a really good time making this by the way he acts.
If I could make just one film in my life, this would be it, Richard Wenk can die a happy man (hopefully not for a very long time). I hope to see another one from these two guys. I know it is a long shot but I really feel that Andy should get an Oscar for this, this is his finest hour, this is so good and so true that you forget it is acting. The original screenplay also deserves and Oscar, it is thoughtful, funny and touching. What more do you want.
If you want to see a good film, go rent or buy this, it is Just The Ticket.
Jerry Seinfeld: 'I'm Telling You for the Last Time' (1998)
The funniest DVD yet
If you liked the show, you will love this. In fact, the only thing that p***ed me off about this is that it ended.
I hope to see the show on DVD soon. Until then, I'll watch this live show.
Buy it, rent it, watch it. I'm telling you for the last time.
