Training Day (2001)
What a ride!!
26 October 2001
Warning: Spoilers
From the moment I sat in my seat until the end of Training Day, the ride was unbelievable; absolutely incredible. There were those first few quite and terse moments before Ethan Hawke(Jake Hoyt)meets Denzel Washington(Alonzo Harris). SPOILER!!Hoyt's at home with his wife and new baby and is excited at the chance he's been given to join an elite LAPD narc unit. Hawke(Hoyt)meets his would be mentor and it's off the hook from then on. The Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg song is most appropriate as they begin their adventure through the streets of LA. Adventure or nightmare, good cop or bad cop, are questions you ask yourself as the movie proceeds. All the while you watch Harris play serious mind games with Hoyt, encouraging him in one breath and literally punking him out in the next. You should enjoy the breakneck speed of this movie and if you're a fan of Washington's acting as I am, you'll enjoy watching him take it to another level.

Denzel's "mighty" fine in this one!
7 May 2001
Do you want to be magically transported to the islands? Do you want to hear raggae music that's out of this world? Do you want to see Denzel's beautiful brown skin against an all white uniform? The Mighty Quinn's got all three plus a pretty decent plot and some pretty well known actors. Robert Townsend is great as the wily Maubee, Mimi Rogers is convincing as a damsel in distress and Sheryl Lee Ralph showcases her talents as both an actress and a singer. But perhaps the best part of this movie, in my opinion, is Denzel's character Xavier. Oh yes he looks sexy, as he always does. But more that that it's the way he embodies a role so much so that by the end of the movie you can't tell him from smooth tongued Jamaican police officer that he's playing. Catch it one late night on television reruns and I bet you'll get caught up. You'll never feel the same way about a Jamaican accent again.

Trois (2000)
A step in the right direction
18 May 2000
I must admit that when I sat down in the movie theater to see "Trois" I didn't quite know what to expect. What with a title like "Trois" which is short for ménage à trois, I was preparing myself to both be shocked and a little thrilled at the love scenes. While I did get that thrilling love scene that I was expecting I also got much more, the chance to see black folk in a complex movie role. I have grown tired of us always being cast as the comedian or the bad person on the silver screen and this movie is a breath of fresh air in that it explores one on one relationships between black folk. While this movie left a lot to be desired in the area of cinematography and acting, it is the right step toward more black dramas. We've got to start somewhere.

The Best Man (1999)
Excellent Film
31 October 1999
In a society where there are so many negative impressions of African Americans, this film is a welcomed addition to the annals of great film making.

Get ready to be totally engrossed in both the characters and the film. The cast is sublime.

You will leave the movie with a smile on your face.

If this is an example of the kind of movies that Malcolm Lee will be making then I can't wait for more.
