The Mexican (2001)
A Complete Embarrassment to American Cinema
This movie was so atrocious that I can't believe it even got released. Watching it was one of the most painful, irritating and boring experiences of my life. Brad Pitt was about a 2 out of 10 and Julia Roberts - though I think the script can be blamed more than she can - was somewhere in negative numbers on that scale. The storyline and script was full of worthless one-liners, stupid love scenes and predictable, meaningless, petty plot twists. Nothing was believable nor even likeable. The reel scenes were pitiful and simple. The movie was poorly filmed, so unchallenging that I literally tried to go to sleep during the middle of the movie, then I tried to read but the theater was too dark. (I would have left but I didn't want to ditch my friends). I don't recommend wasting your time with this typical Hollywood production.
Being John Malkovich (1999)
An imaginative idea goes to waste
BEING JOHN MALKOVICH was based on a very imaginative idea; unfortunately Spike Jonze went in the wrong direction with it. What Jonze should have done was make a low-budget sci-fi flick with this porthole idea.
But instead, Jonze tried to inject a lesson into it. Normally I would commend a director's efforts to be meaningful, but Jonze failed with his attempt.
First of all, the film was poorly cast. When Diaz lost her beauty, she lost her believability too. Cusack is a great actor but really screwed this one up. Keener was OK but her character just stunk. Malkovich, on the other hand, was perfect for the part.
Second, the movie's try at being profound was shabby and feeble. Making a point about being yourself vs. "seeing the world through someone else's eyes" could - maybe should - have been done in a more tangible...or at least more focused...setting. Try again Spike.
Beautiful Girls (1996)
An embarrassment of a film
This is a perfect example of a movie studio using star power to try to fool us into paying 7 bucks to see a movie. By name only, the cast of this flick is great. But it has what must be the most poorly written script I have ever encountered. If it weren't for Natalie Portman and Timothy Huttton, this could have gone down as the worst film of all-time.
Le retour de Martin Guerre (1982)
Fascinating, insightful true story
Le Retour de Martin Guerre is a brilliantly made film. Daniel Vigne crafts the plot - which is based on a true story - with great skill, fooling us in a fascinating manner. Gerard Depardieu is his usual flexible self. It is a captivating examination of love and the law. A great film to rent when you're tired of going to see the filth that is in theaters today.
