The Half-Breed (1916)
Great restoration
Pretty heavy themes in this 1916 melodrama. I have just been rediscovering Fairbanks' early works and this one caught me by surprise. After watching silent films for almost 50 years, what a joy it is to see them digitally restored. A far cry from the fuzzy 8mm prints of my youth. If I had seen a musty out of focus truncated print of this film, I would have missed much of its joy. Thank you to all who worked so hard to bring this one back to all of us.
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Oh, That Mike!
OK, I went to the movies with my wife. I admit it, I enjoyed it - not just the running theme of the appearance of Erin's chest changing according to whom she was going to meet. Now, I know I shouldn't have brought that up - but they put it in the movie. What I really couldn't figure out, and what made me wonder if my local theatre had copped a bootleg print, was the extreme number of scenes where the microphone boom was clearly visible. Not just the tip of it, but on at least one occasion half the mike.Perhaps they spent so much on Julia that they couldn't afford an editor. On the other hand, if they were looking for the documentary effect, it just didn't work. Oh well, a minor glitch in an otherwise enjoyable film.
The World Is Not Enough (1999)
Bond is Bond
Hey, it was great fun. Was it the best Bond ever, or the worst, who cares? New Bonds only come out once every couple of years and I'm there to see them! I must admit, I even watch the Roger Moore installments every time they come on TV - so I'm hooked. For me, World is Not Enough was enough. It has all the right Bondisms in all the right places. The plot was a bit thin, but it was also more plausible than some in the series. The gadgets were good and not too unbelievable (where can I get a set of those glasses?). A couple of years from now when I've watched this one 75 times, I'll think about where it rates in the Bond series. In the meantime, I'll see this one again before it leaves the theatres and will probably buy it when it hits the video stores. Seems to me the producers have gotten what they want and so have I.
