Interesting subject, deplorably handled.
9 March 2003
I have to agree with zwirnm's comments. I was very excited about the possibility of learning something about this little known spot on the planet and it's infamous history. But this film makes itself more difficult to watch than is seemingly worth it, I'm sad to say. Most of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of Nils Kenaston, the cinematographer (if he can be called that) who is either afflicted with a severe case of palsy or is simply the pseudonym of an escaped monkey. Why is it that there are no shots outdoors except for a those filmed through car or train windows which make one sea-sick? Again, in full agreement with the zwirnm's comments - who are these people? I think it's sad that the filmmakers went to the trouble of finding all of these interesting people, but then they don't bother to tell us who they are, how they are connected or anything but a few details of time spent in Birobidzhan. While the archival footage from the Soviet Union is interesting it is presented here completely without context - in the middle of a discussion on Stalin's plans for 'evacuating' the Jews of Russia to Birobidzhan we're suddenly presented with footage of thousands of Russians celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union. Huh? I hope someone is able to revisit this subject with a little more skill.

Hacks (2002)
A mockumentary about the world of stand-up comics that's funny but also in bad taste.
9 February 2002
There's some really funny stuff in this fake documentary about a bunch of misfit stand-up comics. I caught this at a festival in Park City, UT that was happening at the same time as Sundance. While some of the stuff in the film is hilarious, some of it is just in poor taste. The biggest problem with this movie is that it's about half an hour too long. You can cut all the boring slow stuff out of it and have a really funny hour long film. Worth catching if you can see it with some college freshmen while drunk.

Inhumanoid (1996 TV Movie)
A hard movie to watch. Some good ideas but they just don't come together.

I thought of Dead Calm in space when I saw this film, but just not done as well. There's no atmosphere, the way the film is shot seems like a camera was just thrown up and had people acting in front of it. Roger Corman is famous for cheap movies and crappy looking films so it's not much of a surprise. I can't say there's any really redeeming aspect to the film.

Rated X (2000 TV Movie)

No script, boring, makes no sense.
4 January 2002
Don't know what Mr. Estevez was thinking; but he wasn't thinking about the script. The script is so full of holes; scenes that start and don't end, whole story lines that are set up but don't get resolved. This is just awful. The worst part is that both the Sheen brothers do a pretty good job of acting, it's just that the story never really goes anywhere and the fancy photography doesn't make up for it.

an above average low budget vampire flick
6 July 2001
I was actually impressed with this film, expecting much worse. It's quite slow, but once you get into it the pace seems to work. Perhaps I've got more patience since I'm a fan of '70's films. Camera work is very inconsistent and the performances are a bit stagey but overall it's quite watchable. Despite the MTV graphic style, neither the pace nor the editing is very MTV; so be prepared. At least the plot makes sense, even if it is not exactly original.

Modern Vampires (1998 TV Movie)

no worse vampire film has ever been made
1 July 2001
I rented this piece of trash based on a web-based list of 'best' vampire films. I'm trying to think of what would make anybody think of this as a watchable film; and I can't think of a single thing. I guess if you're about 9 years old then you can think of this as 'campy'. But this film has no script or story, is badly acted, horribly directed it's a complete and unmitigated piece of crap it's unwatchable and the worst part is that it's boring. I challenge anybody to watch this and not fall asleep! Not even the few naked bodies in this film could save it.

Sex (1994 Video)
9/10
Music video style sex.

Probably Ninn's best work to date-even though it's old. What makes this video so successful, and a cut above Ninn's other work, is the excellent soundtrack provided by the 'Ninn brothers' (I don't know if Michael is one of them or not) - the music has a strong 'Enigma-Principals of Lust' feel and gives the video a mood that makes the whole thing erotic. Of course it's beautifully shot as well, even if it doesn't make a lot sense plot-wise. Worth seeing.

The Last Day (1998 Video)
8/10
Above average for its genre.
10 December 2000
It's moody and pretty erotic, with more story than most of these movies, with a very cool - almost surreal dream sequence featuring Fiero and two guys. Its worth checking out for that. Raylene is less than spectacular but is more than made up for by a very hot scene between Stephanie Swift (yummy) and Chloe.
