Any Given Sunday (1999)
a truly awful film - why, oh why does it last two and a half hours?
Ok, it has Al Pacino in it and sometimes he gets angry and shouts a lot. These bits at least jar you temporarily out of the seemingly endless tedium. Only temporarily mind, cos this is the dullest film you will ever see. NOTHING HAPPENS AT ALL! And, get this, it lasts 151 mins. Ha ha ha, I get it now - it's a joke isn't it. It's one big practical joke and I fell for it. I watched it till the end. Oh I feel so STUPID. D'oh!
Ratcatcher (1999)
Average art-house social commentary
A nicely shot social commentary on working class Glasgow during the dustmen's strike in the '70s. However it doesn't appear to make any discernable point and whilst this may be all fine and good in the arthouse world of post-modernism it does lose its way and the ending is not really sufficient. If it's a beautifully directed heart-string tugging, take on '70s Britain you're after, Kes is your movie. This is a mere pretender.
American Beauty (1999)
unmissable take on middle America
It's official - Kevin Spacey is THE MAN. He plays a mid-life crises stricken man whose wife is wrapped up in her work and whose daughter doesn't want to know him. So he blackmails his boss, gets a job in a burger bar and starts smoking pot.
It also contains possibly the funniest mis-understanding in film history. This is a fantastic and tragic tale of a "normal" middle-class family in chaos set to a rocking soundtrack - unmissable.
The Faculty (1998)
cheesey self-parodying bilge
The acting stinks, the plot is stolen from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and you sit there wishing it would end. It is predictable in the extreme and the jokes are the work of an infant. Why do film companies commission this dreck? Because you people flock in to watch it. Don't.
Star Wars (1977)
an over-hyped fairy tale
An, albeit complex, kiddies film which has gained a huge cult following spanning the generations and inspiring middle-aged men to go into comic-shops and by plastic rubbish. So in that respect it is the work of a genius however it is just a glorified fairy tale which relies on its special effects to overcome the frailty of the plot.
