Archer: The Big Con (2022)
Big change, good start
The first show without Mallory is filled with changes. Lana is divorcing Robert but he is throwing a monkey wrench into the system by seeking custody of AJ. It seems that he's trying to punish Lana for leaving him. IIS is now the umbrella under which ISIS, now The Agency, operates. IIS is owned by Fabian who has stepped into Mallory's shoes very, very poorly. He succeeds in uniting the team in and by hating him.
Obviously there will be an adjustment period here even more pronounced than the coma seasons. Mallory was one of the key members of the show and adjusting to her absence will take a bit. But I think that this first episode provides a good base from which to build. The haters are gonna hate and there isn't much that can be done about them. But those of us who love Archer and the gang will keep watching and keep finding things to laugh at.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
A worthy sequel
This is a movie I have been waiting to see since the first movie. I thought that the story was fairly well written, and thought that a sequel, if well done, would be great fun.
I wasn't disappointed. The movie takes up 10 years after the events in the first movie; Rick and Evie are married and have a son, Alex, and are living in London when they're not on digs in Egypt. Now that the Bembridge Scholars have come to their senses, Evie is working at the British Museum, and has begun to have strange dreams and waking visions of her in ancient Egypt.
Enter Imhotep, newly resurrected by his followers, who is going to rule the Army of Anubis and take over the world. Anksunamun is also there, in the flesh, to help Imhotep on his mission. His mission is to defeat The Scorpion King, the ancient leader of the Army of Anubis, played by The Rock. Lots of action, fighting, mummies running up walls and golden pyramids later, our heroes prevail (as if you expected otherwise?)
The story runs pretty smoothly throughout and the acting is pretty good, at least as good as the first movie. I wasn't expecting Oscar nominations out of this movie. If you are, wait until it comes out on video and save a couple of bucks for your disappointment. The special effects were OK, too, though a lot of them were rehashes from the first one (wall of water instead of sand, Imhotep absorbing the souls of his victims to gain strength, mummies running on the walls, scarabs coming out of the sand, etc.) The most annoying part of the movie, which I had problems getting past, was the very poor quality of the computer-generated graphics involving The Scorpion King in the last bit of the movie. Given the high quality of the rest of the CGI, from the recreations of Carnac to the Army of Anubis to Imhotep-in-tatters, this was very difficult not to notice.
Overall, a good adventure flick with a couple of good laughs thrown in, this should be on a par with the original Mummy in terms of success and viewability. Will I be waiting for The Mummy 3 based on it? Sure will!!
Freddy Got Fingered (2001)
A first for me in 30 years of movie watching
I saw "Dude, Where's My Car". I saw "It's Pat". I saw "Wagons East". I was entertained by all of these, at least minimally. I have seen many very bad movies. I've seen a few very VERY bad movies. But up until last night, I had never walked out on one.
I went to see Freddie Got Fingered with little expectation. The trailer looked mildly entertaining and I've seen a few skits with Tom Green that were funny and thought he was pretty funny in "Charlie's Angels". So I went in figuring that there would be some chuckles and maybe even a couple of knee slappers. If there were any after the first 30 minutes (past the swinging-baby-on-the-umbilical-cord) scene, I missed them.
I watched, and kept hoping it would get funny. Maybe it'll get funny after he guts the deer and wears the carcass. Nope? Maybe it'll get funny after he jerks off a horse. Nope? Maybe it'll get funny after he licks an open fracture on his best friend's leg. *sigh* Nope. Maybe it'll get funny after he swings the baby around on the umbilical cord. I'm not sure. That's where I walked out and went to see the last half of Joe Dirt. (Which I had seen in its entirety on the weekend before) I felt better about switching movies but felt badly that I couldn't have taken my money back from Tom Green and given it to David Spade, Dennis Miller, Kid Rock and Christopher Walken, who actually made a movie that was both funny and entertaining.
