The Stepford Wives (2004)
Hysterical and fantastic!
I'm amazed that any critic would pan this film. I went in unsure if it was going to be any good and was extremely pleasantly surprised by the film. I nearly fell on the floor laughing so much! It's fun, it's original and it's funny! My friend and I left the theater still laughing and repeating lines we loved.
Pretentiousness is not an attractive trait. Anyone who attempts to appear intellectual by ripping on this movie only shows him/herself to be humorless. Politically correct? Hardly. Neither sex is spared the jokes.
Critics should really learn what people like or what they'll appreciate. This is a great, funny film. Enjoy it!
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Didn't capture me till the end...
I love William Shakespeare, so I watched this movie warily, unsure if it was about to be ruined for me. Clare Danes isn't my favourite actress. I find her whiney and emotionless most of the time. She made a decent, if bland, Juliet.
The scenery is gorgeous, though, and the idea of placing the story in modern times, but keeping the dialogue the Bard wrote is excellent. The contrast is perfect and really catches your attention.
Regardless of all that, the movie didn't really grab my heart and I didn't expect to shed a tear. I watched rather impassively till the very end. Then Romeo drank the poison...and Juliet opened her eyes. The look of horror on Romeo's face -- when he sees she *is* alive and he knows he's just ended his -- made my heart ache. A few tears were shed at that moment.
Overall I give it 7.5 out of 10.
The 10th Kingdom (2000)
Enchanting from beginning to end!
As a fan of fairy tales, I settled on the couch, not expecting much in this miniseries. But the opening credits started, "Wishing On a Star" began and New York was transformed into an enchanted kingdom...and I was hooked. This is a marvelous and captivating miniseries. It captures the *real* fairy tales, which weren't all sweetness and light. This is not a Disney story. This has heartache and curses and struggles, just like real life. But it's a wonderful trip all the way and you'll never regret putting your feet down that path.
Frequency (2000)
Suspenseful and exciting!
Tense. Nerve-wracking. Thrilling. All of these words describe Frequency. Although it starts a little slowly, it certainly picks up speed and tension quickly. Don't listen to the nay-sayers or negative reviews. Come in with an open mind and heart and you'll love this movie. It's entertainment in the purest sense. Just when you think you've got it all figured out -- it changes again and the suspense rises! Until the very last second, you'll be positive you know what's going to happen. You'll be calling it to the end...and you'll be wrong. Take a chance on this movie. You'll be glad you did.
Peace on Earth (1939)
A Beautiful Page of History
The States had not yet entered World War II. England and France had just declared war on Germany. While the US strove to remain neutral, Hitler invaded Poland and already took Austria. We were standing on the brink.
This short is a wonderful reflection of that time. Two baby squirrels listen to their grandfather as he sings "Peace on Earth, good will to men" and ask what "man" is. Grandfather explains about the race of man and how their violent and ugly ways destroyed them. The visuals and images are startling and poignant. It shows a war in the 30s & 40s and still touches a person watching it today. It's a brilliant commentary on the world and humanity. Presented through the eyes of animals, it is an amazing cartoon. Cartoon shows used to show it infrequently when I was growing up, but in the "politically correct" times we live in now, it has disappeared. Don't miss the opportunity to see it if you can.
Scrooge (1970)
A delightful holiday musical!
When Christmas rolls around, there's always a glut of adaptions of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". This wonderful film is not one to be dismissed when the other twelve overwhelm you! Full of great songs that will stay with you long after the movie is over ("December the 25th", "Happiness", "Father Christmas") and impressive dancing, this will easily become your favourite holiday movie. Made in 1970 with a young Albert Finney taking on both rolls of the ancient Scrooge and the young man before he changed. The film is full of great actors (Alec Guiness as Jacob Marley's Ghost!) and fun moments. Take a moment in the hectic Christmas season to watch it. You'll never regret it.
