Rocket's Red Glare (2000 TV Movie)
3/10
Totally Unbelievable
28 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this for fun, just to see how bad it was and it was dire. It only got three from me because it made me cry with laughter.

The smoke during the lift-off is extremely bad and it looks like the capsule does a U-Turn in space.

Once up there, the astronauts aboard the crippled shuttle look like a bunch of gormless idiots who wouldn't know what 1 plus 1 equals.

Oh yeah, and the kid wears a suit designed for his grandfather....totally different sizes etc....

I'm quite surprised they didn't having the kids manning the mission control

Pinocchio (1940)
10/10
Truly magnificent, a masterpiece
4 August 2005
Pinocchio is one of those films that you can't help re-visiting.

I remember watching as a child on TV one Christmas and have seen it numerous times since. I also had the pleasure of playing Geppetto in a school production.

The animation is fantastic and has set the standard for today. The use of multi-plane techniques add real dimension especially when you look through the window into Geppetto's shop for the first time. You believe it's real.

I recently acquired Pinocchio on DVD and the restoration job is superb and it still makes me cry, 20+ years after I first saw it.

A truly magnificent film and hard to believe it's over 60 years old and still is up there animation wise with the Disney films of today.

If ever a film deserves to be called a masterpiece, it's this.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Good but not that good
24 July 2004
I went to see Spiderman 2 with an open mind having seen all the hype and even eaten the associated burger.

I didn't see the first one on the big screen but was somehow drawn towards seeing the second so I bought number 1 on DVD and was impressed.

This one however didn't live up to expectation...it was quite slow and lacked the pace in parts of the first one. The action sequences were good not as good as the first one.

Alfred Molina was great as Dr Ock, Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire as the hero were again on fine form. However it was spoilt as the love interest storyline took centre stage detracting from the Dr Ock plot and there was a noticeable period where the villain didn't appear.

By far the best parts of the film were the inspired opening credits which briefly outlined the first film and the in-jokes about Peter hurting his back (Tobey Maguire hurt his back prior to making the film and they almost had to re-cast the role). I was the only one chuckling in the cinema when they came.....

Overall I'd give it 7 out of 10 compared with 8.5 for the first one....

The perfect comedy
26 January 2003
This show is centered around one thing, if it wasn't for that thing there would be no show. That thing is Will Smith.

His acting capabilities are superb....especially in the episode where his father comes back after a 14 year absence and then leaves him again. This episode had tears running down my cheeks with sadness as you really genuinely felt for him as he shouted out all the stuff he had done and all the stuff he could do without his dad and how he wouldn't make the same mistake.

Another great thing about the show is the support casting and this is superb especially the guy who plays Carlton and has to put up with all the short jokes in each episode and Geoffrey is wonderful.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips (2002 TV Movie)
Not as good as the film
12 January 2003
While this TV version of the classic film was good, nothing is as good as the film with Robert Donat.

I felt Martin Clunes was a good choice for the role and the acting was good, but far and away the best part was the story....something that can never be bettered.

Prey (1998)

A great loss
19 October 2002
Prey was one of the programmes that was kept you hooked and I managed to catch every episode even though it was screened late at night it a slot it never deserved. It kept me away from my study books.

I would love to see it revived just to find out the conclusion to the cliff-hanger but unfortunately it's now 4 years and Debra Messing (Sloan Parker) has moved onto "Will and Grace" which is passable.

Oh well.....it's a shame I didn't get to video it.

Godzilla (I) (1998)

Dire film
18 October 2002
I caught this film on TV cause there was nothing else on.

I wish I hadn't been bored enough to watch it......it was dreadful.....in fact I'm at a loss for words to describe how bad it was....

Anyway, the thing that really did it for me was Matthew Broderick.....to me he is only one character.....Ferris Bueller and I expected him to start talking to the camera all the time......

I wish I could give it 0 but instead I'll have to give it a less than deserved 1 out of 10

The best film I have ever seen
17 July 2002
Warning: Spoilers
This is my all time favourite film.

I caught it on TV a few years ago and whilst watching it cancelled my afternoon's engagement so I could find out whether The Jackal got away with it.

Possible Spoiler: My favourite bit is when Michel Lonsdale tells them he bugged them all to find the leak and the look on their faces!!! :-)

The other day saw the DVD in a bargain bin in a shop. Naturally I snapped it up and went home and stuck it in my DVD player. After the film finished I switched over to the news.....President Chirac had just survived an assassination attempt on Bastille Day!!!!

Spooky or what????

Anyway, definitely 100/10 (if that's possible)

Superb
28 December 2001
This is one of the best films ever made....way better than the original Star Wars trilogy put together and given special treatment.

The effects are amazing.

If you want to check out the director's other work....check out Braindead!! Simply the funniest film with the worst SFX ever made.....he's come along way has Peter Jackson and it's for the better

The Jackal (1997)
6/10
Not bad, but not good.
8 December 2001
This movie should be shown to all film studies students....how not to remake a classic.

I first saw the movie this film was based on The Day of The Jackal a couple of years back and that had me on the edge of my seat even though I could quite easily have fast-forwarded to the end. With this film I wanted to do that but decided to give it a fair go.

A few plot elements remain from the original version but these are just casually tossed in for references such as the insider (I won't spoil it for anyone).

The ending was a bit predictable but that's what you expect from Hollywood these days. The disguises and hair colour changes were highly amusing and some of the moustaches looked like they were going to drop off any minute.

But the thing that did it for me was how it was done.......in the original the Jackal is a highly skilled marksman....that may be true in this film but he just uses his portion of the fee that was paid up front to buy a high tech weapon which he can operate remotely. Where's the skill in that!!!!

The only decent scene in the film was the subway scene at the end with the trains but even this was poorly done by 1997 standards!!!

I gave it 6 out of 10 but that's only because I liked the original story and the basic idea. If this had been an original film I would have given it 2.

Please note that I've not mentioned Richard Gere until now...this is because I feel he doesn't really deserve a mention based on his performance in this film. Why not get an Irishman or at least someone willing to give it a go (for reference Sean Bean in Patriot Games)

Scream (1996)
8/10
Probably the worst horror flick I've seen
2 December 2001
Scream has got to be one of the least scary movies I've seen.

I borrowed the video from a friend and man, I'm glad he didn't charge me, I'd be asking for a refund. I did all the right things and sat down in the dark on my own with the phone off the hook.

But did I feel scared....no....did I jump.....no.....

In fact the only good thing I found about the film was the casting of Henry Winkler aka The Fonz....

This movie was basically sh*t and I would give it a star, let alone two.

Yawn
17 July 2001
I can't believe it....despite the numerous species of dinosaurs, great sound effects, a child-hood (and adult-hood) fascination with dinosaurs AND NO late nights, I actually fell asleep and missed the end of the film!!!! it was sooooo boring I'm not going to go back to see the ending!

I do give the film-makers some credit....85 was long enough...another half hour and I might have been comatose!!!

Can you believe that they're considering another one????????????

Great but not that great
14 May 2001
Star Wars is one of those films which you wish would go away from time to time.....one mediocre prequel is bad enough but three???

As for the film, the acting is suspect, the effects are the Terminator 2 of their day and the plot....well, not that great....

As for releases, let's see a nice DVD Box Set please.............imagine all the special features they could have....

Star Wars on DVD NOW!!!!!!

Once again Ben Elton delivers the goods
6 May 2001
Ben Elton IS a comic genius.

He can turn the dullest subject into something hilarious.

In this his latest live offering, Ben Elton talks about various subjects including infertility and IVF (of which he has experience and was the subject of his film Maybe Baby).

While I heard most of the material before on his TV show, it was refreshing to see a whole theatre of all ages laughing, crying with delight (and also cringing).

It has to be 10/10, a video to cheer you up and that you can never tire of......even if you know what all the gags are

Not as good as the play
30 April 2001
This is a great film but the humour of Arthur Askey has faded with time.

I was lucky enough to see a production of the original play (by Arnold Ridley from Dad's Army) before the film. The play is much more suspenseful, spine-tingling and was without some of the joking that took away some of the suspense.

Overall 6/10

It got me thinking.....and scared
7 April 2001
This is the first film that has really freaked me out....can we cheat death and if so will it catch up with us. I had to put it away and leave it for 24 hours before even venturing into the extra features on the DVD....oh by the way...look out for my obituary on 1st January 2023...I'm supposed to die just before...anyone with the DVD will know what I'm on about.

Well...back to the film....there is some great acting from up-coming stars Devon Sawa and Ali Larter as well as Seann W. Scott of Stifler (American Pie) fame.

The acting is ropey in some parts as well as the script but apart from that a great film.....4/5

Tony Todd from the Candyman pops up for a couple of minutes as a mortician.....just because the director wanted him in a film!!!

Oh well that's it.....get this film on Video or DVD...or better still see it at the cinema (I didn't....I should've done)

One of the greatest movies ever made
10 March 2001
I first saw this movie at a late night showing to celebrate it's 50th anniversary. There are very few movies which can last the test of time and which can bring warmth and unite everyone in the cinema....I was one of the 200+ who gave it a standing ovation (now how often do you see that in a cinema).

Jimmy Stewart is excellent as are all the other actors. A better cast could not have been assembled. The story is simple at that's what makes this film great....a simple device, excellently filmed. It's also a film which makes you think that no-one is unimportant and that everyone has a role in life, however little that role is. Have you ever tried imagining what it would have been like if you were never born?

As for the beginning of the film...well, no spoilers here but I've got to say that it is one of the funniest things I've ever seen....who knows....perhaps it's really like that....

Remember.....every time you hear a bell ring an angel gets its wings.

It's a wonderful life after all

The Tall Guy (1989)

A superb film....filled with Humour
26 January 2001
Being a Rowan Atkinson fan...I love Mr Bean...watching this film was a must and this film is soooo funny.

Rowan Atkinson is excellent playing a comedian who doesn't like being upstaged.

Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson shine in the lead roles and the sex scene is one of my favourite scenes of all time.....no spoilers here, just prepare to laugh...

The blind man who's allergic to his dog is excellent too...well I would say that as a relation, but still excellent use (he's actually deaf!!!).

What can I say....buy it, rent it, watch it on TV....just make sure you see it!!!

Forget "comedy" films.....watch this (spoilers ahead)
21 January 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I bought the DVD Box Set of Jurassic Park and The Lost World.

Having managed to get the last seat in the cinema on the day of release for JP, I failed to see TLW on the big screen.

However, I was I had seen it. This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen and my sides were aching for several hours afterwards. The T-Rex in the city was fantastic, including the special effects. The DVD shows them without the T-Rex....it's strange watching a bus dent itself.

Anyway, back to the movie.....the double cheeseburgers line is pure genius comedy wise, as it the cut at the beginning from the scream to the yawn.

One bad note is the inclusion of the kids from JP. On screen for about 30 seconds, they look highly uncomfortable and are probably wondering why they ever signed up for the sequel.

Apparently Laura Dern and Sam Neill are back for JP3. Oh well...if it's as funny as this it'll be worth seeing.

Diva (1981)
9/10
A superb film
21 January 2001
I've just watched Diva on TV. I came across it by accident and found it in it's original undubbed version. The plot was fantastic, the chase scenes even better.

I'm normally put off by films with subtitles as I tend to spend most of the time reading the dialogue and not focusing what's going on, but this film had a great balance between dialogue and action and I was able to follow the film throughout it's entirity.

This is the first French film I can remember watching all the way through without switching channels to see what's on...

I'd recommend it to anyone...

Supreme multi-player game.
11 January 2000
This is a superb game for the N64 with superb graphics and a great one-player story-line and even better multi-player game best played with 4 people.

The many levels and options for weapons mean that this is one of the best games around for years.
