Are you kidding me?!? So bad it's funny
4 May 2024
I love Vince Vaughn. And I'm cool with actors stepping outside their comfort zone & trying to stretch out, play different roles etc. But this?

I don't know how much he was paid for this movie but I hope it was ALOT, cause this might be one of the worst movies ever. If you take it as a joke within the genre, it could be used as a possibility for a Mystery Science Theater 3,000 type of thing, then maybe it's worth it. There are some decent hands-on special efx of violence & people's faces being ripped off, bones broken etc. But taken seriously as a movie, oooof no way, proceed with caution.

Oh yeah and Vince Vaughn with a southern accent too, lol...with the movie based in NY, Staten Island to be specific...So much goofiness it's hard to describe...But Vince did put on some weight & take some boxing lessons, he actually pulled that off...Maybe he just wanted to play the bad-ass who can take all the pain & still dish out the punishment once...But overall, sorry it's an E for effort but F for failure.

Raymond & Ray (2022)

Wanted to love...But it's Terrible, the writing is a total inconsistent mysterious MESS.
23 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First off, beware the preview. The movie portrayed in it seems to be a comedy/dramedy of 2 half-brothers (Ethan Hawke & Ewan McGregor) dealing with the death of their world's worst dysfunction junction childhood father. But it's not light-hearted fun in the least...Which is not a problem if the story makes sense, it rings true in it's universe and you can somehow understand & believe the characters actions. But this story certainly does not.

Is it a surrealist absurd take on bad fatherhood? Is it a rumination on the possibility of a bad human changing & evolving as he advances in life? There are so many strange, incongruent characters & things happening in this movie that it's hard to know exactly what it's trying to achieve. And no offense to the actors, i think they do their best with a questionable story. My question is when they read the script, how were they not scratching their heads at the premise? Seems like they should've been.

Just a few examples, this father of theirs who seems to be a terrible person somehow has fathered multiple children who keep popping up in the movie and the latest is about 10 years old that he fathered with the spunky half his age Latina women in the movie that Ewan McGregor winds up fooling around with at the end of the movie (Lol, payback/karma?). Somehow in the town of the father's funeral, he's viewed as extremely charismatic, charming etc by mulitple characters. This is the same man our 2 main characters hate & still have scars as grown men from? Oh yeah and 1 more thing, this father slept w/ his son's wife (Ewan McGregor's character) and impregnated her, so that Ewan's character has a son that's not really his, it's his father's; so who he thought was his son is actually another half-brother?!? Lol...Uhhh, yeah that's in this story.

So maybe to whoever's reading this, maybe you should see this movie for yourself and experience the confusion of these characters' actions yourself & make your own decision? Or maybe don't waste 2 hrs of your life and watch a more entertaining movie that makes sense and gives you something to legitimately think about. This ain't that movie in my humble opinion...Sorry Ethan & Ewan, nice jobs w/ the material you had but next time delve a little deeper into that screenplay...

Hellraiser (1987)

Loved it then...But sadly it hasn't aged well.
6 April 2023
Clive Barker, big fan of his writing. Was thrilled when this movie came out. The Cenobites were Hell's most insane rock band. 30 something years later I just watched this with my son. And sorry to say there is alot of "cringey" stuff in the movie. The story, the ideas, the theme were all so very original & I'm curious if the 2022 remake/reboot will enhance & update this movie.

But much of the acting & actual story is ooooof, pretty bad. But the Cenobites are still fascinating & kinda save the movie to my 21 year old son who can appreciate the thoughts behind the movie & forgive the all the bad stuff. When you have to say, "Well back then this was really powerful", & keep qualifying your opinion from 35 years ago, that's telling you something. There's alot of good to this movie & there's alot of bad. But it's still worth the watch if you're a newbie.

Back then if IMDB existed I'd probably have given this 8 stars, now I have to back off a bit and give a generous 6. But it was pretty ground breaking back then...Ahh well, time moves on...

Competing Divergent Storylines weakens rather than strengthens series
4 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Of the 3 series: Yellowstone, 1883, 1923; I think this is the weakest. And it's still pretty good don't get me wrong but the Spencer/Alex segment consistently completely stops the momentum every time it cuts to them...And Alex's affectations & speech manners, I'm not sure exactly how the character of Spencer is swept off his feet by her, but ahh young love, who can explain it?

However this whole 1st season is building & leading to a big showdown of some sorts, the Duttons vs the tag team of Tanner the sheep herder & Timothy Dalton's sadomasochist businessman. All's he needs is a handlebar mustache to twirl & he could be a villain from bygone days... And the season ends with Spencer still across the pond just trying to get back to America. Obviously Mr Sheridan has a long view here but damn, it's a tough pill to swallow & a long way to wait for the "payoff". Kudos to Ms Helen Mirren, I think she kills it and the Spencer character is also well done, except he's dragging around the Alex anchor for some godforsaken reason. I don't buy that mad passionate love affair imho.

And the cruelty & degradation of the Native Americans, while I presume rooted in truth, is tough to watch but powerful. Though I'm not sure where the intersection of that storyline is going to mesh w/ the main story but I'm sure Mr Sheridan has it all planned out on a story board I guess.

All in all, a decent watch (w/ lots of holes & eye-rolls) but nowhere near great. 1883 = great.

Depends on your frame of reference...
15 October 2022
It's funny how the reviews are all over the map for this movie. I came into this cold, I'm not an Agatha Christie aficionado, haven't read her books, have not seen the 1974 movie. So using that as a basic guideline I thought Kenneth Branagh did an excellent job with this movie both in direction & acting (hamming it up) as Detective Poirot.

The style, the sets & the scenery of this movie are Sumptous, to say the least. I don't think I've ever used that word before but that's what came to mind while watching it. I was connected to the story, the characters and I was entertained. And this type of movie is certainly not the norm in 2022, it does feel both modern & old-school Hollywood. I watched the trailer for the 1974 version & maybe you had to be of the age to enjoy it back then, but seeing the trailer now, I don't know if I could even give the '74 version a chance. That 70s melodrama etc, don't think I can do it. But many reviewers favorably compare that movie to this one, for whatever that's worth. Guess u'll have to decide for yourself.

So depending where you land in age, Agatha C experiences might affect how you feel about this movie. Taking this movie as a stand alone I thought it was well done, well acted & led into "Death on the Nile" at the end...Take care...

Saw it back in '92, Still love it in 2022
5 April 2022
Back when "Independent" movies were exploding in the early 90s this little gem came out. Full disclosure, I'm a born, raised & still here native NYC boy & I knew these kinds of people. People in other reviews wonder about where these characters are from? They're from everywhere & this was the real deal back in early 90s. This is before Williamsburg & Greenpoint areas of Bklyn exploded & became gentrified 'beautiful' neighborhoods. Nick Gomez created this movie that kinda spans just a few days, that are probably like many other days in these characters' lives. Edie Falco, Paul Schultze, Peter Greene all before their big roles in the Sopranos, Nurse Jackie & Pulp Fiction for P. Greene ("Bring out the Gimp...Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead.)

Back in the early 90s, Falco & Schultze were working as waiters & bartender at my friend's bar (for real, though not for much longer obviously). Indie movie world was bursting and Nick Gomez was the hot young new director after this movie. I found it totally by chance on some cable system in NJ & showed it to my 20 yr old son. Not sure he appreciated & liked it as much as I did, but I loved the Scorsese/Cassavettes style of exploring the low gritty lives of struggling characters banging their heads against the 'mean streets' of their environment. There's not a load of action in this movie but as other reviewers noted, it feels like your a fly on the wall in these characters' lives for a few days. And for someone who's from this neighborhood, everything feels real, legit & authentic, warts & all. I totally recommend it this to anyone curious about the Indie movie world of early 90s & gritty pre-gentrified Bklyn. Just be warned it's not an action movie but it's xclnt, in my humble opinion...Enjoy.

Entertainment...But beware the trailer, misleading...
28 February 2022
Out of the 3 so far, this prequel is probably at the bottom imho, but it's still an entertaining ride. But the one big takeaway is that if you watch the trailer it seems that Rasputin would be the main villain/opponent & that R. Fiennes & his son start up the "Kingsman" group...But beware this trailer is a bit of a dupe. I'll leave it at that... And this is another movie that plays with history, ala also, Tarantino "Hollywood" movie. Basically WW I is up for grabs here. The story bounces a bit here & there like a pinball machine but this is big budget Hollywood entertainment here right, so all the 1 star reviewers, not sure what they were looking for or expecting? It is what it is & Mr Fiennes' does a nice job with what he has & his all star helpers are the usual MVPs of course & a pissed off one horned goat that saves the day at the end..Enjoy it for what it is or on the other hand, don't bother watching...Take care...

Ridiculous but Nerve-Wracking...
23 September 2021
This is kind of a more personalized 1 on 1 update of the movie Falling Down, but in this one Russell Crowe's character is pretty evil, though it's briefly mentioned & shown, he's got substance abuse problems, self loathing issues, has lost his family & is pretty upset at the world & ohh yeah somewhat violent... Yeah Russell's alot different from his Gladiator days and like I said in the headline, it's a pretty ridiculous movie...BUT for what it is, it certainly does it's job...Besides the 10x you'll say "C'mon...", you'll have that gnawing feeling in your stomach & your nerves may be shot a bit. It succeeds on that level & just know that's what the goal is going in...And there ya go...Leave out the political commentary but the reviewers, geez. And maybe think twice before giving the angry beep at a red light waiting for the car in front to move...Take care.

BEWARE...Don't be duped by the trailer. Terrible.
2 July 2021
If you watch the trailer you might think you got a kinda silly, funny super hero buddy comedy here, why not give it a shot? And then an hour & forty five minutes later, you'll be shaking your head. Holy moly, just horrible, terrible. You've been warned & way too many things wrong with the movie to try & list, just take mine (& many others) word for it, pick something else....

Garlin + Columbo + quirky world = Handsome
11 April 2021
It's nothing earth shattering, it's kind of odd & kooky, some nutty idiosyncratic moments, but if you like Jeff Garlin & put him as a LA lovable schlubby detective instead of Larry David's manager & you're cool with that, I think you'll enjoy this movie. I did. I luv Jeff Gariin, I think merely his voice can sometimes bring forth a smile. For some reason he seems to be kind of on the verge of retirement from the PD as his whacky (senile?) Captain keeps asking for his retirement papers. He's mentoring a bunch of younger future detectives who seem kind of lost. His partner is an all out gruff lady nympho, his new neighbors are a mother & daughter, the daughter seems like Wednesday's cousin from the Addams Family. So you kinda get the idea about this universe. And Jeff Garlin in the middle of all this pulls it off. No shootouts, no car chases, some Columbo following hunches, playing 45 records on his record player hoping to fall in love with his neighbor &.... Don't mind all the curmudgeon reviewers bashing this, don't know what they were expecting. "It is what it is" as the phrase goes (as used in this movie as well). Enjoy, with the right mindset...

I Care a Lot (2020)

The Ultimate Love/Hate Movie - Anger Inducing, Disturbing & disquieting...Mission accomplished to the director.
21 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There's alot of angry vitriol about this movie. I don't really get the 1 star reviews but I totally get that this movie can be very polarizing to say the least. It was making me angry while I was watching it, especially when it seemed to segue into making the main character, Rosamund Pike's Ms Grayson, kind of the 'hero' who the audience should be rooting for...But I think that the director kinda knew what he was doing throwing a bit of a curveball at the audience & seeing if they'd fall for it because most everyone in this movie is part villain, just to lesser degrees.

There's some tough things to swallow in this movie, assassins who make a complete mess of things over & over again & no intended victim ever dies...until the end when...well yes, the surprise ending is what kind of saves the movie from being a total black hole of swallowing acid. But there's really no good guys in this movie, it's a mess of worse & more worse. But it definitely makes you feel something. It's gonna make you angry & disturbed & that's the point I think thus it's worth the watch.

I wonder what the gay & lesbian world will think about the main characters portrayals in this movie. On the 1 hand she is strong, independent, courageous & yet totally immoral & full of evil & quite possibly a sociopath...another interesting point to ponder. Rosamund Pike kills it as the evil angel with a smile on her face who 'cares a lot'. Decide for yourself, but the 1 star crowd I think is way off base....There's ALOT to digest & consider from this movie.

Things that make you go "Hmmm"...
18 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker is now the reluctant irascible Bill Murray curmudgeon like character, doesn't want to be bothered, is too scarred by his own vanity/mistakes & has lived by himself w/ some weird creatures for decades.

Benicio Del Toro shows up for a few minutes as the fixer/con man, helps a couple of main characters & then pulls a fast one.

Leia gets blown up into outer space but 'the Force' enables her to survive & float on back in & thank goodness, She's alive. Then the old hyperspace kamikaze sacrificial mission by the Rebel leader that those meanies, the First Order didn't see coming thank goodness again....

Sorry for the spoilers, it's a decent flick if you don't analyze too deeply & just wanna see it b/c you've seen all the others but imho Mark Hamill doesn't really pull off the Yoda role (though it was nice to have a Yoda cameo). I like Rey as a character but wow, she really was blessed with a whole boatload of powers for someone who really hasn't done much in the training dept...Like I said, don't analyze too much & you'll be ok. If you do, well there's lots of things that may make you, like me, go "Hmmm". And thank God that the bad guys still can't shoot too well & seem to miss all the good guys, lol...sorry couldn't resist.

Kinda slightly Entertaining but totally BIZARRE.
19 November 2020
How this movie got pitched & made with alot of big names is mind-boggling. It's so far out of any kind of reality that if it was all a dream at the end then it would've made sense...But it's to be taken seriously soooo...It makes no sense. Being generous I guess it's kind of a throwback to a madcap romp of yesteryear but it's ridiculous on so many levels that maybe it's worth a watch when you go in expecting absolutely nothing just to shake your head and go 'wtf' when it's over...Embrace the madness, lol...

A Spike Lee movie fan, but this?!? Geez...
15 November 2020
There's so many whacky, illogical things going on in this movie that it's hard to know where to start. How some reviewers are giving this an 8 or 9 is mind-boggling. I'm a native NY'er like Spike, still here in NYC & have been enjoying his movies since the beginning of his career. So I feel almost badly saying this but what the hell happened with this movie?? Like I said earlier there's so many goofy choices made by Spike that I don't know how or why he made those choices. I would say beware and if you do watch it, you've been warned & you'll understand afterwards when you're shaking your head at a lot of different mind boggling parts in this movie. And it could've been really good I think but then it went off the rails...Good luck

Outer Banks (2020– )
4/10
Southern West Side Story / Without brains, story or a clue...
3 May 2020
So you have the Pogues (the poor kids), the Kooks (rich kids). They're mostly 16 (though look like their 20s). Southern yokels, drug addicts, drunks, absentee idiot parents, rich coke-head sociopath, dumb sheriffs, the Romeo & Juliet story, good looking with heart of gold poor guy with the rich girl who leaves rich boyfriend for her poor Romeo, etc etc...

So in all fiction there is a "suspension of belief" in the viewer to accept the premise, the story, the characters right? Wellllll, you better get ready for a lot of suspending belief if you're gonna go the whole season on this show, which I did because I love my daughter & wanted to follow all the way through, lol...But it was hard to not rip it apart but also used as a learning tool; Don't EVER act like these nimrods.

If you're a teenager looking for some relatively mindless entertainment with attractive actors, here it is...If you're the parent of said teenager looking to have something to bond with them...Uh oh, good luck. And people from South Carolina, especially the real Outer Banks can't be too happy with the depiction here on either side, rich or poor, that's for sure...You've been warned.

It's Great but it's Terrible. Prestigious but Ludicrous...
1 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert - The Movie with a capital M looks, sounds & feels classic & real in that England late 1890s kinda way. Killer cast - Bale, Jackman, Johanssen, Caine etc...The cinematography, the acting, top notch. So what's the problem? The problem is that this serious, 'artistic' movie about antagonistic magicians hinges at the end on a Cloning Machine created by Nicola Tesla in Colorado & shipped over to London somehow & the other character is actually Twins!!! Lol, that's alot to swallow in the last 5 minutes that undoes much of the good value of the previous 2 hours...But judging by all the 10s given & cheers for Nolan as a director, I guess most people overlook those small factoids, lol...I'd like to but can't, thus a 5 rating...

Terrible, just terrible...
20 July 2019
I don't know what the hell the previous reviewer is talking about...This is such a disaster on every level it hurts the head to even give it a few more minutes of time in your life to contemplate the story, the character's actions, this small town...It is really a total disaster and I lasted right to the end...What the hell were Gary Cole & Robert Forster doing in this?!? Quick payday perhaps? Beware, you've been warned.
