Erin Brockovich (2000)
Strong character study
I think that some people might get fooled into thinking this is a courtroom drama. They shouldn't. This is a look at one woman's attempt to find herself and to live up the potential we all feel we have.
I really enjoyed this movie. Julia Roberts managed to do some acting for the first time in a few years and it paid off. She made Erin into a believable character who you wanted to see succeed. She was not perfect and when the movie was over, she had still not sorted out all the facets of her life - something no-one else has ever done, so why should she?
The secondary characters were well defined, being more than just cardboard cut-outs. They had their own desires and dreams and we got to see just enough of them to care.
Take the time to see this movie. I am sure you will not be disappointed.
Mission to Mars (2000)
Scientific Sci-fi? I don't think so.
This film offended me on so many levels. Not because I had any sort of moral issue with it, but rather because it pretended to be a hard sci-fi movie, but it got most of the science wrong.
Example: The Mars spacecraft had a voice recognition unit for the computer. Why? Were they afraid someone would hack into it? Yet, despite that seemingly useless advance, they did not have anything to tell them that the fuel line had been punctured. We know they had such sensors in the Apollo program - why had they lost the technology by 2020?
Add to that a script so full of cliches that I was saying lines to myself before the actors spoke them and you have one of the worst films I have seen in a long time.
Beverly Hills Cop III (1994)
One of the worst films I have ever seen
I was working on my list of worst movies ever made and a friend mentioned this movie. I had actually blocked out watching it because it was so bad. The first movie is pretty strong, the second is OK. This one is one ranks down there with "Batman & Robin" and "Gozilla" as the worst of Hollywood big budget drivel.
Batman & Robin (1997)
Not a Batman Film
I had to comment because so many of the defenders of this film say that if you are a Batman fan, you will like this movie.
I am a Batman fan. This movie is easily one of the worst ever made.
Mr. Freeze is a caricature instead of a tragic figure as he should be (watch the Animated series if you don't know what I mean). And why is he teamed with Poison Ivy? Why would someone who wants to turn the world into an ice cube want to team up with someone who wants to turn it into a greenhouse?
Like the movie if you must, but please don't tell me that I have to like it because I'm a Batman fan. Every Batman fan I know hates this movie. It is a giant step backwards for the character.
To claim that a Batman fan should enjoy this movie shows a fundamental mis-understanding of who Batman is and what a Batman movie should look like.
A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999)
What a waste
This is quite possibly the worst adaption of Shakespeare ever put to film. The only reason I can't say for certain it is the worst is because I haven't seen all of them yet.
I blame this movie on the director. Through silent scenes, he turns Thomas Bottom into a sympathetic character when he should be little more than a buffoon. What a waste when you have a fine comic actor like Kevin Kline in the role!
Two characters that are supposed to be different heights are almost exactly the same. In a scene that is usually hilarious, they insult each others heights, but the camera shoots the "short" one from below and the "tall" one from above, making each look exactly the opposite of what the script states. Shakespeare's words are had enough without the director working to counteract them.
Go see Brannaugh's "Much Ado About Nothing" if you want to see Shakespearean comedy filmed well. See this film if you need a nap.
