Still Bill (2009)
A boss, a legend, yet so unknown
Since I was a child I was fascinated by the songs, and the voice, of Bill Whiters. Now that I'm much older I started to appreciate him even more as a person who simply does what he believes is best for himself. If that means leaving fame and fortune behind, ignoring cries of fans and musicians alike, he will just do that. And he phrases it in a way that fully justifies what he did. I was pleasantly surprised by the happy ending of this documentary, without spoiling too much. The only thing lacking in this documentary in my opinion was a lack in his musical background. I would have loved to hear which artists inspired him, what music he listened to. Other then that, a rare documentary of a very remarkable and talented person.
We Were Soldiers (2002)
No more!
It's so obvious that this movie is in line with the 9/11 aftermath. All the ingredients are there; faith in god, important family values and ofcourse a honorable but tragic death in combat. Sometimes i had a feeling i was looking to G.W. Bush instead of a movie, like when Gibson explains his little girl the meaning of the word "war". This movie continuously carries out a message that war is terrible, but that evil has to be fought and that it's an honorable cause to die for your country. This first hour of emotions is followed by an hour of combat; It's all been done before. I've had enough of all these patriotic movies. It might work for americans, but it's too much for me. Had a hard time sitting it out. 4 out of 10.
Alone (2002)
Unsatisfying end !
This flick is definitely worth watching. It's not like the average thriller. Superb camerawork, good sober atmosphere. The end is a bit unsatisfying though, it leaves one behind with a lot of questions. But it's probably meant to be like this. 7 out of 10.
Safar-e Ghandehar (2001)
5 out of 10
Wrongfully informed as i was, i supposed that this movie was a documentary. I was hoping to see a real documentary about a difficult travel to the infamous city of Kandahar. I found it confusing to find out that this is a documentary-styled non-fiction movie. Anyhow, the movie certainly gives a chilling look inside the daily lives in Afghanistan, a country torn apart by war and hunger. The desperate journey of a woman to save her sister out of Kandahar shows us the attitude of the Afghani's and the bizarre difficulties that a woman in Afghanistan faces. I believe the movie was shot in Iran and the characters - refugees, desert tribesman and war-victims with amputated feet or hands -, had not only never appeared in front of the camera before but did not even know what film was prior to the arrival of the production team. Before shooting could take place the actors were shown videos to familiarise them with the media of the moving image. Now this is what causes the weakness of the movie. The english speaking characters did not convince me with their acting. They look uncertain and don't seem to have any movie experiences. (Except for the afro-american doctor, he convinced me). Even the Afghani characters speaking -to me unfamiliar- languages gave me the feeling they were reading from an auto-queue rather than acting spontanious. Also the chronological order in this movie was confusing, sometimes even not correct. All this leaves a bad impression behind on me. Even though most comments i've read are very positive - even if it's filmed in a far away county, by an Iranian director - I believe good actors make the movie.
Seven Days to Live (2000)
poor storyline
Although the movie has its exciting moments, the end is really bad. The story of this movie doesnt make sense at all. The whole "7 days" things is an unexplained phenomenom. The history about this haunted house remains unexplained as well. Perhaps somebody can explain it after seeing this movie, i could not. Save your money on this.
Vertical Limit (2000)
Strange plot
Although this is an entertaining movie, the storyline was quite disappointing. The whole recue-operation in this movie is beyond believes, no doubt, but hey, it's a movie. But this was what bothered me the most: As soon as this main character discovers his sister, and manage to lift her out of the cave, the plot switches to the save harbour of the camp-base, where his sister is recovering from her adventures. I was wondering if a chopper was waiting on top of the mountain to bring them, and his not-able-to-walk-anymore sister, back to the basecamp. Or perhaps they took a bus? Somebody tell me, after such a horrible trip to reach her, leaving almost everybody dead, they managed to go back to the camp, carrying her. Should we use our imagination on this one? Or couldn't the writers figure out how they would manage, so they simply let this fact out the movie? The way back, carrying his wounded sister, with the lost of so much equipment and men, should be more exhausting and impossible then getting there. But in an amazing way, they managed to get back. I guess i have to use my imagination on this..Bad plot.
The Story of Us (1999)
A waste of money !
Oh my god ! I will never understand why Bruce Willis agreed to play in this movie; it's the worst of it's kind. Both me and my girlfriend we're watching the time during the entire movie, wondering when it would finally end. It's boring, dull and hard to sit out.
