Horrible attempt to try and capture the magic of Hitch...
24 August 2001
Zemeckis once said that his reason for making What Lies Beneath was because "I wanted to make a movie like Hitchcock." Did he succeed in doing so? He wasn't even close. Although the movie did have its suspenseful moments, the movie as a whole was boring. Zemeckis relied on the few instances of suspense to carry the whole movie, which all go out the door when viewed the second time. Did anyone notice the climatic score sounding very similar to that of Vertigo? The difference between this and anything made by Hitchcock is that even after multiple viewings, Hitch's movies still leave you in suspense and entertained. What Lies Beneath works okay the first time, and fails anytime after.

One helluva movie....
31 July 2001
Yes, this movie is pretty harsh. Yes, many of the situations may be hard to take in. However, the beauty of this movie is that although many of the situations may seem rough, Solondz presents them in a manner that isn't overdone or in your face. It's an honest film that does not lack integrity by forcing viewers to sympathize for the main characters, but shows the ups and downs of growing up. A truly remarkable film.

Chuck & Buck (2000)
The Lowdown....
17 January 2001
I will spare anyone who reads this the agony of hearing how greatly directed the movie was, or how moved I was by Buck's plight, cuz I didn't think these things were the movie's strengths. I can see why people might think that this movie is long and boring and dull. I can see why people could be easily repulsed by it. I can see why people would think this was garbage rather than a great flick. However, I am one of those people who loved it. I found Chuck & Buck to be honest and true. I felt it did not manipulate you to feel sorry for Buck, nor did it make you want to celebrate his personal growth. I was expecting this whole emotional score to end the movie on a very uplifting note, as if one had just triumphed in a grueling emotional journey, but it didn't. It just works. But hey, I could be wrong. I mean, I think I'm one of the only few people on IMDB that liked Eyes Wide Shut. Hehe

Why? The answer's right in your face...
2 January 2001
Many have commented on the lack of character development, and the slow moving pace. What movie did they see? 'The Virgin Suicides' is a poignant work of ark the depicts the coming-of-age of neighborhood boys and their endless fascination with five sisters; sisters who ultimately take their own lives. One main complaint that I've read about the movie is that there is no explanation on why the sisters decided to kill themselves; however, I thought the reasoning was quite apparent. Was Cecilia's death ever spoken about after the fact? Did the Lisbon sisters know how much they were really loved? Did the sisters ever fathom that they would be talked about for a lifetime by the boys who vehemently admired them? The narration is beautiful, and the acting is superbly executed. Kudos to Sofia Coppola for a job well done.

The Cell (2000)
Visually Stunning, yet utterly boring...
22 December 2000
The way the mind sequences were shot were simply amazing. The use of color and the camera angles were awesome, but that's about it. The story seemed interesting, but was poorly executed. I did not get into any of the characters, and was quite bored throughout the flick. However, I cannot say enough about Singh's technique in shooting the character journeys in each other's mind. It's simply spectacular, as if I were in a dream. However, I had a hard time accepting Jennifer Lopez's stint as a Virgin Mary-like figure. Was I the only one who thought that was a little far-fetched? I guess they were trying to make this into a real artsy flick, but failed miserably. People called it disturbing and claustrophobic, I found it to be dull and slow. Rent it, and you'll prolly say the same thing.

Such a waste of talent...
24 October 2000
First off, I must admit that there were incredible performances from Haley Joel Osment, Helen Hunt, and Kevin Spacey. The movie seemed so promising from the beginning. Introducing each individual character in such a likeable manner, you would think that the whole movie would leave the theater with a smirk on your face. Then, you start to notice the first flaw in the movie, and you kinda let it go. Then, you start to feel really depressed because everyone starts to reveal their own personal demons... yeah, exactly. Then the most ungodly of things happen, and suddenly you feel like you've just witness Jesus dying for our sins. Do you see why it is such a waste of talent? Haley, Helen, and Kevin gave extraordinary performances for what seems to be a script geared more towards the best TV movie of the week. Utterly disappointing...

A Rose for a Rose....
24 October 2000
Quite simply one of the best movies of all time. True, many of the themes are harsh and disturbing, but at the same time, truly beautiful. Flawless in every way, thought-provoking in every moment, and divinely concluded. A true modern masterpiece.

Give it a couple of tries, and then you'll see...
24 October 2000
I too loved A Clockwork Orange, 2001, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, et al, so I was totally confused on why I didn't like Eyes Wide Shut when I first saw it. Nor the second time, or the third time. I guess I couldn't see what Kubrick was trying to prove/portray, but after relaxing, and watching it for the FOURTH time (yes, I had to see it four times till I finally got it, though not all in one sitting), CLICK!! I saw what Kubrick wanted us to see, and now I know why this is one of his most brilliant works. It took a while for me to warm up to it, since everything is so subliminal. Paying attention to detail is so important, it's almost claustrophobic. Along with that, it is a very long and exhausting movie. However, once you start to put the pieces to the puzzle together, the resulting picture is very rewarding.

What else is there to say?
24 October 2000
This movie is excellent, and quite frankly flawless. Yes, Kevin Spacey was great in American Beauty. However, he was absolute perfection in The Usual Suspects. Best Supporting Actor? Who was he supporting in this movie? A true Spacey vehicle not afraid to tantalize and surprise.

Happiness (1998)
Truly thought-provoking...
5 October 2000
Trish: The sister who really wants to believe she has it all, but knows she really doesn't. Helen: The sister who knows she has it all, but wants everyone to know that she still wants more. Joy: The sister is who is constantly reminded that she has nothing. These three along with a whole array of characters truly make this film remarkable. What other movie exquisitely portrays a father-son heart to heart on masturbation? What other movie is daring enough to show two senior citizens engaging in intercourse? It's sick. It's perverse. It's savagely entertaining. It's provocative. It's not for everyone, but if you're one for dark comedy, "Happiness" epitomizes the genre.

Best Adult Film Ever...
22 January 2000
Anyone who is into porn will argue that Vivid's Bad Wives may be the best picture, but I would have to disagree. This movie was sexier, and the acting and plot was superb.

Steven St. Croix plays a man who has a problem with an old imaginary friend, and it's literally ruining his life. Finding no help from his shrink, St. Croix decides to take matters into his own hands. However, when you think that he put an end to his problem, things go horribly awry.

The sex scenes were insanely hot, especially with the opening scene. I recommend this movie to all porn fanatics, and even to those who may not like porn. This movie will surely win them over!!

One of my favorite movies...
22 January 2000
This movie was funny, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. True, it's not for everyone, but I, for one, loved it. However, viewers must be warn about the immorality portrayed in the movie. With that said, go rent it and enjoy a finely crafted black comedy.

Quite possibly Angelina Jolie at her best...
22 January 2000
I was left awestruck after watching this movie. Angelina Jolie's performance was nothing less than a masterpiece. She truly captured the essence of Gia, and was insanely beautiful at the same time.

It's a very difficult task to put your emotions out the way AJ did, and I'm glad that she was rewarded for her perfect portrayal of the fallen model with the Golden Globe. (Too bad she didn't win the Emmy, though!!)

Funny... really funny.
22 January 2000
Now, I know that the majority of the people who have seen this movie hate it, but I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's certainly not a movie that people should take seriously. The comedy here is upfront, and if you were to just let yourself go, then I'm sure you would enjoy it just as much as I did.
