Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Its worth 9 just for the ending on it's own.
A great story and performance by Rami Malek. Much better than I expected, I never saw Queen live but this was the next best thing. Probably not the best if you don't like Queen but shouldn't be missed it you have any inclination towards one of Rock's greatest bands.
The Flying Scotsman (2006)
Obree is a hero
I saw it in Aberdeen on Sat night, I wasn't really expecting much as sporting films are usually bordering on rubbish but it was very entertaining. Everyone quotes the bike "built from washing machine parts" but very seldom is Graeme Obree acknowledged as the superb (drug-free) athlete that he was. I would recommend it, although it does over simplify events, as cinema usually does, but it was 90 mins well spent. I hope Graeme benefits from its release. Her indoors also thoroughly enjoyed it even if it was very much, my choice of film. I would recommend it if you just enjoy a good story. In fact it is such a good tale that sometimes it is easy to forget that it is a true story and just how heroic Graeme Obree 's feats were.
Capote (2005)
A great film made by one man, Phillip Hoffman
This has to be one of the films of 2005 and one of the best acting performances ever. Phillip Hoffman is now Capote in my eyes. If he doesn't get the best Oscar performance for this role it'll be the biggest travesty since Brazil didn't win the soccer world cup in 1982. The performance was so good that the murderer's actions pale into insignificance compared to Capote's manipulation of the murderers. Put your money on Hoffman for best Actor Oscar. The whole film want you to find out more about Capote and indeed read "In Cold Blood". Amazon can expect an order very soon. I know they say its easier to play a dead person but you find yourself transfixed to Capote throughout the film.
AfterLife (2003)
The best of UK cinema, very thought provoking and moving
This is a great example of very none Hollywood film making which is very thought provoking, moving and not without a sense of humor, Kevin McKidd and Paula Sage are superb.
I actually watched it on late night TV and I can see why I missed it in the cinema, its not the sort of film that the multi-screen "mega" cinemas show nowadays, mores the pity.
I am going to look for the DVD. Not for those who prefer, the current trend towards special effects and no story. If you liked the best selling book "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time", you'll enjoy this film.
This film ranks beside the best of Scottish films, such as "Small Faces" and "trainspotting". All films which Kevin McKidd also star in.
Highly Recommended.
Seabiscuit (2003)
A Rollicking good story
I have seen reviews saying this is a "very cheesy" movie, I disagree with this, it could have been overly sentimental as well, like a lot of hollywood "true stories". However this film is well written and well-made with good performances from the cast. - This is definitely an above average movie, with a good story, that doesn't rely on violence and special affects or hollywood shmoltz. Indeed I know my teenage nephews went to see it at the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it, definitely one for all the family. I have purchased the DVD, which I am glad about, as I will watch it again. A very enjoyable way to spend 2 hours.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
An extraordinarily bad film
This film follows the trend in todays big budget movies, in that it has spectacular action scenes which just merge into one another without rhyme or reason. There is no story to speak of and indeed the "gentlemen" seem to get bombarded from all directions by spurious dangers. There is no point in trying to make sense of the proceedings as there is no sense to be had. I only gave it a 3 because, some people may be enthralled by the special effects but I do think everyone is becoming immune to such films and I just hope stories come back into fashion.
The Green Mile (1999)
The best 3 hours about death row - ever
I had severe reservations about sitting through a 3 hour prison movie, set in death row at that.
However this never drags and keeps you wondering right to the end and although it is essentially a story of good's fight against evil, it never get's over sentimental, apart from the very end, which I felt was the weakest part of the film, however this isn't really essential to the plot and doesn't spoil it that much. A must own on DVD film.
9/10
Gladiator (2000)
Movie entertainment at its best
I give this a 10/10 rating because it deserves it for just pure entertainment. Never mind all the critics who say it has inaccuracies in it. It is a film and it has great photography, fantastic score, great drama and acting and enthralling story. So if you want to be entertained then just watch it and don't treat it as a history lesson. My movie of the year by far.
