Winston Churchill: Walking with Destiny (2010)
Well done
This documentary presents a lot of new information for me.
Not mentioned during the discussion of the RAF's success against the Luftwaffe is how the Chain Home early warning radar system enabled an outnumbered British air defense to succeed in spite of Germany's advantage.
A prevalent message in this film is Churchill's horror at the Holocaust; by early 1942, he knew 1.5 million Jews (no. cited in the film) had been killed by the SS in Eastern Europe.
Unfortunately, history indicates the Allies did very little during the War to stop the slaughter or to save and absorb refugees. This leads me to question the accuracy of this presentation. How was this reflected in Churchill's policies? Did he publicize what he discovered? How much did FDR know and, paraphrasing Mr. Baker, when did he know it? Interestingly, the only relevant mention in Wikipedia's Winston Churchill page indicates the opposite: "A newspaper article penned by Churchill and published on 4 February 1920, had warned that civilization was threatened by the Bolsheviks, a movement which he linked through historical precedence to Jewish conspiracy. He wrote in part: 'This movement among Jews is not new ... but a 'world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilisation and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality." Shut Up and Kiss Me! (2004)
Good for about x minutes
Watched this movie when couldn't sleep. Was pleasantly surprised since cable system rating was 0 (out of 4) stars. Not bad for this type of movie, i.e., two unsettled guys find amazing women.
This time, boy meets girl in atypical ways, such as knocking heads (literally). Lots of ups and downs, sometimes reaching into the cliché drum - gangster uncle, Italian of course, wouldn't let his niece meet ANY guys so she's pretty much a captive in a luxurious beach front house.
Cut the tie up loose ends last scene. It was BORING.
Please, writers, if can't wrap-up creatively -- don't do one. "Cowboy riding into the sunset" cliché, dog meets a new friend, even a premature THE END would be better.
Enemy of the State (1998)
Think of the Patriot Act etc when watching this flick
As a thriller, this movie was great when it was released in 1999. But today (Nov. 2006) it's dynamite.
The protection the U.S. Constitution provides can be, and has been, eroded whenever threats seem overwhelming. From the "Alien and Sedition Acts" of John Adams, through the Japanese-American concentration camps during WW II, past the Red Scare and Blacklists of the Cold War to our own time's Patriot Act et al.
In time, we've had the opportunity, and wisdom, to correct these abuses. Ya'd think we'd learn and avoid these pitfalls the next time.
Nope.
Each new threat seems unique and requires more power "from the people. "
"Who's going to monitor the monitors?"
