Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story (2019)
The price of taking a risk
I'm not a diehard KG fan. I do enjoy her comedy and the way she weaves funny stories. I've even been to one of her shows when she happened to be in Hollywood, Florida (I was living in Orlando at the time). It was a terrific performance. Like any excellent comic, Kathy takes risks. Unfortunately she really went too far with President Trump and has/is payed/paying the price. The lashback is as disgusting as what she did. But the demise truly was avoidable had she kept her extreme political stance separate from her comedy. Sure, a comedian can joke etc. about politics. But Kathy's anti-Trump stance is grossly personal and she does not appear to have learned that lesson as evidenced in this documentary. Kathy's whole business model and income demand controversy. I get it. A true documentary allows the viewer to draw their own conclusion -- does not lean to either side of a controversy. IMHO this is a true documentary. Draw your own conclusions. As a stable human, I do not wish any ill will on Kathy - despite my own political preferences. I hope that she bounces back and actually learns the separation of deep personal beliefs and comedy that is actually funny. Would I go see her perform again? No. Will I watch Kathy for free on Amazon Prime? Yes.
The Gunman (2015)
There goes 2 hours of your life
SPOILERS
So the guy and the girl just (temporarily) escaped a group of killer and while switching cars she refuses to continue to escape until he tells her this long backstory. Sorry. Could no longer suspend disbelief. Completely unrealistic. I will say this... Sean Penn has taken good care of his body. Very fit and ripped. Other male actors in his age group have let themselves get fat.
Girl 27 (2007)
Suspend criticism, and see the ripple effect of rape
Regardless of any 'errors' or liberties the director may have taken, understand that this is a TRUE story of a minor, a 17-year old girl, who was raped and had the courage to attempt to seek justice. Nevertheless, the psychological effects of rape in that era (1937) had a ripple effect in her life. It touched and destroyed nearly every aspect of her life. The lessons to be learned deal with courage, integrity, honestly, and communication. If possible, I highly recommend watching on DVD so you have access to the director's commentary. Go ahead and read the harsh reviews - examine the criticism and you will discover nit-picking and diversion from the good that you will gain from a viewing.
FAQs (2005)
Charming, fun with a touch of "preachyness"
I found FAQS by chance at my local Blockbuster. I'd already seen Luster which was also directed by Everett Lewis, and although I didn't like Luster I decided to give this one a chance. The movie paints gays and straights into very strict categories which works for the message of the film.
The opening credits almost turned me off - as though I was going to be watching some political piece, but instead turns into a believably realistic look at the prejudice that gays in general are often subjected to and manage to overcome.
Without giving anything away, I can tell you there is some acceptable eye candy - but presented realistically - the average gay guy vs some tweaked out gym bunnies.
Overall very satisfying and recommendable even as a date movie.
