Sliders (1995–2000)
When good shows turn bad
13 July 2005
As you would have picked up from the other comments, this show started off being the intriguing, original and enjoyable show that it was. Even though I haven't seen this show since it originally aired on TV (in Australia, where we're oblivious to the US Network changes), those early episodes with the original 4 sliders sliding to different 'what-if' scenarios was an addictive formula with a great potential from a sci-fi perspective. After the professor left (Rhys-Davies), boy did this show begin to STINK!

The change of show format was too unsettling. Since I have repressed memories of the show when it truly began to 'slide' (pardon the pun), I can only say the show declined greatly due to these factors -

When the boring Kromags began playing a more prominent role in the series. The show also began to take itself too seriously.

When Kari Wuhrer was a cast member. Big boobs = so what?

The dullness of Charlie O'Connell, fortunately he only lasted for a year until replaced by the soporific Robert Floyd - however, I can not even vaguely remember this character or what he looks like, which gives a good indication of how bad and unmemorable (and ultimately, in light of how good the show was, sad) the last season was.

And lastly, the change in theme - from one of 'what-if' to a show about battling the boring Kromags with characters that are not interesting especially since they replaced superior characters.

It would be interesting to watch the whole series again, from the superior first half to the wretch of the second half. Even though I saw the last season, I can not simply recall any of the episodes (was it really that bad?), except that one one original cast member (Derricks) was left, accompanied by bland cast members.

To cap my review off, a great show reduced to rubbish :(

The Patriot (2000)
You'll be Cheering the Brits!
30 July 2000
Always ready to watch a war film on a Sunday morning, this film has some great, stirring battle scenes (especially those cannon balls!). While many have criticised the flag waving routine (It's a staple of US cinema) and the portrayal of the the English, I must say what really made this film work is the bad guys! Mel and Heath did admirable jobs as good men fighting for their principles but on the other hand, the swarthy behaviour of the English is particularly memorable (They even ham it up for good measure...but not too much) and as a result, their performances are a lot more enjoyable than the good guys (Just like the North Vietnamese colonel in Missing in Action 2). Remember...It's sometimes the 'bad' guys who make the film work! Also, its interesting to note how war tactics have changed since the 1700's - men standing in formation marching to get into range, men crouching down to MANUALLY LOAD their weapons, men getting shot in the nuts, fierce hand to hand combat, flags waving...ah, those were the days.

Pelvis (1977)
A waste!

I rented this video (as Toga Party) expecting some great stuff (it was Rated R, after all) but what I saw was the lamest piece of 85 minutes ever. It has all the filmmaking craft of a bad late 70's blue movie. Filled with unlikable (and ugly) actors especially the lead actor, obviously a John Travolta wannabe. The basic 'plot' of this film has the the lead character moving to New York to star a singing career. There's some 'comedy' sex scenes (by speeding up the film and inserting comedy music) and a 'comedy' robbery scene but it's a waste of time.

Genocide (1982)
Something not to be forgotten!

A documentary about the 'Final solution' to the Jewish people in Europe in the early 20th Century. Filled with period black and white photos of mass graves, death camps, historical figures and period film, this film really captures the times - definitely not the brightest time for the Jewish people but as this film shows, there is always hope. Recommended for anyone wanting to know about the holocaust - something that did happen and should not be forgotten in this new millennium.
