In Dreams (1999)

Great first half, formulaic, ordinary second half
10 March 2001
The first hour or so of this movie is great. It is interesting, good-viewing and imaginative.

It's a pity that after the hour mark the film looses so much effectiveness as it becomes ordinary and predictable. It's a shame that a little of the imagination shown in the first part of the film was not evident towards the end.

The film is 8/10 for the first hour, 5/10 for the rest. I feel it deserves 6/10 in total.

The Cell (2000)
8/10
Don't judge a film by its critics ...... The Cell is disturbing, yet surprisingly good
17 September 2000
I went to see this having read a number of reviews here in England that were not very favourable. This coupled with an IMDB user rating below 7 and the fact that the director specialised in music videos meant that I went to see The Cell without great expectations. I'm happy to say it far exceeded what I expected.

I've seen the film described as a cross between The Matrix and Silence of the Lambs. This is quite an accurate appraisal. The Cell is an original horror movie - a rare beast these days. Originality is something I value highly in horror films and this is different to any horror movie you've ever seen.

The character development of the Lopez character and agent Novak is rather lacking and some of the main questions the film is seeking to answer could have been given solutions on a more psychological level. This is not a classic movie or even a horror classic, but it's better than another slasher flick (ironic or otherwise!)

Be prepared for some very disturbing, dark images. For me, much worse than anything Se7en or Silence of the Lambs had to offer. You need to steel yourself for this one, but it's worth the effort.

An unexpected encounter with a brilliantly original Horror film
6 May 2000
I was still at school when a friend of mine in my home town of Redcar, on the English North-East coast, suggested a trip to the Redcar Regent.

I had heard that this movie had had rave reviews in the States and that it was very scary but that's all i knew (i didn't even know the name "Freddy Kruger"!)

The thing i most remember about the film was that the rows in the cinema were actually shaking at the scary bits!!!

The film is wonderfully original - a great concept (invading nightmares) and villain (Freddy!) are perhaps the keys to it all. There are a lot of jumpy moments in the movie - OK there's a little blood and guts but this is a scary movie not a slasher flick.

The movie franchise this created was an opportunity missed (Freddy could have maybe got scarier instead of more drole?), but, of course i agree, that the third film was special, too.

This is a must-see horror film and occupies a place in my top ten horror movies of all time. I'm sure I'm not alone.

King Kong (1976)

Underrated quality remake of the ultimate monster movie
21 February 2000
I always feel this movie did not get the credit it deserved. O.K. it was not as good as the original but has any monster movie ever matched it? The effects and story are very entertaining and Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges are well cast. My favourite touch was the selection of the World Trade Center instead of the Empire State Building for the finale. Shame you could not see it well in the dark however. The film is great fun for any movie or monster movie fan. Watch, enjoy and await the UK DVD release. Superb entertainment!

A superb, original UK horror movie with a great twist at the end
7 February 2000
Set on a remote Scottish island this film is a classic piece of 1970's horror. Rituals, sacrifice and paganism are rife. Christopher Lee gives a excellent performance. This is a must-see film - truly original and bizarre. Better than Hammer and other UK horror of the 60's and 70's.
