Made me nervous
21 August 2003
I generally really like weird movies that make you think. I loved "Being John Malkovich", "Requiem for a Dream", "Donnie Darko", etc... However, instead of being thought provoking and interesting, this movie just made me nervous.

At first, I was just waiting for something to happen. Granted, the cinematography is excellent, as is the use of lighting and colors. However, the movie takes a while to really take off. Then, it's just one awkward and embarrassing thing after another. Finally, none of the characters or storylines are really developed enough to make you feel for them.

I think that this is one of those movies that will be better with a second viewing, because you know what's going to happen and that everything turns out alright in the end. I just don't know if I can sit through another viewing.

P.S. I rented this movie with the extra DVD of bonus material, which, if it is at all possible, sucks even more than the movie itself. If you happen to love the movie and want to buy the DVD, don't waste your money on the 2 disc special edition.

Spider-Man (2002)
Great comic-book movie!
10 May 2002
Alright, I'll admit it, I did NOT want to see this movie. My husband dragged me to it. I was afraid it would be another horrible comic-book movie that was dark and full of inside references that only devout fans of the comic would get. However, I'm glad that he did. It was great!

I really enjoyed the fact that a lot of the movie revolved around Peter Parker's wonder and enjoyment of his new skills and also of the relationship between him and M.J. This made it such a chick flick! However, at the same time, there was stuff exploding and people fighting and so it was a great guy movie too. I would definitely recommend this movie for a date.

Like many of the other reviewers, I noticed that some of the special effects were not up to par with many recent films. I commented on this to my husband who said that he thought they did that on purpose to give it more of that "comic book" feel. After thinking about it, I agree. Also, many people have spoken about some of the cheesy, over-the-top dialog. I think that this was also supposed to harken back to cheesy comic-book type dialog.

All in all, it was very entertaining and interesting, and unlike many comic book-turned movies lately, you do end up caring about the characters and their feelings.

Rock Star (2001)
Rock On!
19 March 2002
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought that it would be stupid and boring (and yes, at times, it was both), but there were enough quirks in it to make it really different and interesting.

First of all, I found it immensely amusing that Chris' parents were totally into his rock 'n' roll lifestyle and it was his brother who was the wet blanket instead. Also, I liked how Jennifer Aniston, as his girlfriend, handled the situation. Instead of being totally immature and jealous and breaking up with him in a screaming match with accusations flying everywhere, she calmly tells him that this is his time and his dream and although she is sad that she doesn't have a bigger part in it, she is content to go do something she wants to.

Also, I watched this movie on DVD and I would totally recommend this way to view it. If you listen to the director commentary, he tells you that there are artists from Slaughter, Dokken, Third Eye Blind, and Verve Pipe among others that play the musicians (including Jason Bonham). Therefore, these guys really contributed a lot of input as to whether the movie was realistic. As for the guy who commented that there was no connection to Judas Priest, the director said that the studded vest, hat, and collar seen at the Steel Dragon house was a direct reference to Judas Priest. Also, that the lead singer of Steel Dragon turned out to be gay.

So, if you like rock movies I would totally recommend this one!!

Hmmmmm...
19 March 2002
Well, I just watched this movie on DVD twice in one day (once alone and once with someone else) and I'm still not really sure how I feel about it. Deep down inside, I keep getting the feeling that this is somehow a really great movie, but I can't make up my mind if that feeling is only because of how different it was.

First of all, I agree with everyone who said that this film should be shown to high school kids to deter them from ever doing drugs. I must say that if ever, for even a moment, I would consider shooting up, I would just have to think of Harry's arm at the end of the movie (gross!).

I have to say that the cinematography, editing, acting, and even the musical score were all excellent. I think that Ellen Burstyn gave the performance of a lifetime. Also, if Jennifer Connely was going to be nominated for a Best Supporting Actress award, this should have been the movie she was nominated for (rather than A Beautiful Mind).

Basically, if you like f****d up movies that make you think, al a American Psycho or Memento, you should give this one a shot. Otherwise, don't waste your time and money.

Cruel Intentions 2 (2000 Video)
Oh-My-God!!
1 October 2001
First I want to say that I am a HUGE fan of the original Cruel Intentions movie. I thought that the dialogue was witty and realistic, the characters sophisticated and well thought out, and the camera work and scenery was beautiful. Cruel Intentions 2 lacked all of this.

Even if I had never seen the first movie, I would have to say that this movie is one of the worst films I have ever seen. They touted this film as being a prequel to Cruel Intentions. Well, all this seemed to be was a third rate remake of the original. We did not really learn anything about Kathryn's and Sebastian's background that we already didn't know. Also, I couldn't believe that they actually used some of the exact same lines and music as in the original.

This movie totally lacked the sophistication of the first. I really wish that I could find something nice to say about it, but I think that I am still in shock that someone actually put up money for this abomination to be made!!

Great satirical movie!
1 June 2001
First of all, I must say that I am not gay and actually I watched this movie with my husband. While I am a bit more open-minded than he, we both got a kick out of the movie. Probably the most striking thing to me was the imagery. Right off the bat I made the connection that although it is set in modern times, everyone in Megan's family and school dressed in fifties style clothing. I definitely think that this was making a reference to the way that her community thought about homosexuality. They were back in the fifties, so to say, in their way of thinking. However, towards the end of the movie you see Megan dressing in more modern clothes (especially that cheerleader outfit!)

All in all, I don't think that this movie should be taken too seriously. It seemed to be a social commentary on the closed-minded people in our society. Especially since in the same movie saying that homosexuality is bad, that women should also be cleaning, cooking, and changing babies while the men should be out chopping wood and playing football. Basically it took all the gender stereotypes to the extreme in order to show how silly they are

Hannibal (2001)
I NEVER want to see this movie again!
11 February 2001
Ok, I love horror movies. I read Stephen King like there's no tomorrow. I loved the Exorcist and Seven. But this is one movie that disturbed me so deeply that I personally never care to see it again. Yes, the cinematography and scenery was beautiful. Yes, Anthony Hopkins once again gave an Oscar worthy performance. And yes, Julianne Moore was truly excellent as Clarice. The problem that I had was the fact that there was basically no plot combined with the sickest and most graphic violence I have ever seen in a movie. Also, the psychological motivation for the killing from Hannibal Lector also made this movie very disturbing (yes I have seen and love Silence of the Lambs). I guess that if you have no problem with extremely graphic gore and mutilation then this is the movie for you!!

Another thing that greatly disappointed me was that they did not go into Hannibal character much. I was hoping that in this movie we might find out some background info. about his childhood, etc... that fostered his love for killing and cannibalism. However, this movie provides nothing into his psyche. Oh, well, maybe the next one...

Antitrust (2001)
Surprisingly Fabulous
16 January 2001
Ok, I'll admit it. I wanted to see this movie because I think that Ryan Phillipe is gorgeous. However, I actually went to see it because my husband wanted to. I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually a good movie. There was enough computer jargon to make one (who is only remotely into that stuff) feel like you were in on something, but not so much as to alienate most of the audience. In addition, I thought that there was just the right amount of suspense. Enough to get you excited, but they got on with it before it got old. Also, I liked that at times even though Milo is a total computer genius, he was not able to put in the right code on the first try. I think this made it more realistic. All in all, I found this movie very entertaining, with a few twists and surprises thrown it. Also, it's a great date movie that guys and girls can both enjoy.

One of the strangest movies I have ever seen
3 October 2000
I must say, this movie was absolutely nothing like I expected. I rented it because my sister said that it was fabulous. I must say that I now agree.

Before I saw it I was under the impression that it would be a psychological horror flick. I had been told that it was gory and was preparing myself to be completely grossed out. However, I was not at all grossed out. I thought that the murder scenes were tastefully done and left much to the imagination. For me, that allowed me to focus more on the plot and less on just some graphic scenes. Contrary to what some reviewers have said, there is actually a plot. We slowly follow an already disturbed man into the depths of insanity. What is especially intriguing is the fact that he realizes that he is insane. I have to say that Christian Bales' performance is definitely oscar-worthy. Just the fact that at one moment you can think that he is a very good looking guy and then the next think that he is one of the ugliest people shows his outstanding range and understanding of the character. I agree with many, however, that Reese Witherspoon was severely miscast in this part. She does not possess the sophistication (in looks mostly) to portray that part, no matter how small that part was. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone who would like to see a movie that stays with them and forces them to think about it for hours afterward.

P.S. To the 13 and 14 year old girls that hated it - that is the purpose of the R rating!

X-Men (2000)
I got dragged to this film and ended up actually liking it!
20 August 2000
First of all, I must say that I am a female who is totally NOT into comics of any sort. Therefore, when my husband talked me into going to see this movie, I was extremely skeptical. I expected it to be another one of those movies where if you weren't on the "inside" and hadn't read the comic books (yes, I was dragged to see "Spawn" and I had no clue what was going on) that you would just be bored out of your mind for about 2 hours.

Boy was I surprised about X-Men. I must say that this film was written very well. You really needn't have ever read the comics to fully understand the plot of the movie. Sure, there were a couple of inside jokes (eg. the yellow spandex jumpsuit reference, which I had explained to me at a later time), however, I'm sure that those were for the purpose of entertaining the comic book fans and in no way did they detract from the plot.

I thought that the special effects were fabulous and that the characters were all very personable. Also, in the character of Wolverine, just enough humor was added to make it enjoyable to watch. Therefore, to all the females out there who are dreading the possibility of being dragged to this film - don't. It really was pretty good!

The most intelligent "teen flick" I've ever seen
17 August 2000
When Cruel Intentions first came out I thought that it would be another one of those cheesy "teen flicks" with popular "teen" actors in the same old situations. Boy was I wrong! I watched it on HBO at one of those times when absolutely nothing else was on TV. I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised!

The mise-en-scene was what first impressed me about this movie. The way that the scenery subtly alludes to the french origin of the story was captivating. The rich colors of the surroundings as well as the costumes makes the movie a pleasure to watch.

Then came the script. As a twenty-something college student, I found that the characters actually had intelligent conversation and said things that my friends and I would actually say. I was also impressed by the blatant-yet-subtle sexuality in the film. The thought of sex was present throughout the movie, yet there were no breasts flying around and no actual "sex scenes". I feel that this left much more up to the imagination and added greatly to the tension. I thought that although the movie was not terribly realistic in the situations, it is indeed just a movie, not a documentary, and fulfilled it's purpose in providing great entertainment.
