Moonfall (2022)
6/10
Wasted Opportunity
3 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I mostly enjoyed this movie but only because I could fast forward through the excruciating bits...and those bits were exclusively regarding the travails of yet another ex-spouse and kids. It is a mystery why Mr Emmerich thought including these characters was a good idea because they added nothing worthwhile to the plot but definitely became unwanted distractions. Had the movie concentrated solely on the central theme and action, it would have been much better for it. The central conceit of the nature and origin of the moon was fascinating and great science fiction, and was all that was needed to make a great film. I even think the destruction was unnecessary but mostly because it was ridiculously over-the-top. As depressing as it is to think of the billions of people dying, it is far more depressing to think of all the poor insects and animals dying, so enough is enough on that score Mr Emmerich.

Visually, the scenes in space and inside the moon, were amazing, and very well done. Some of the dialogue was very ordinary, and some of the acting was less than stellar. Unfortunately, most of that came from Ms Berry, who seemed especially wooden in her performance, as though her heart wasn't in the production. And it didn't help that the only character you felt any affinity for was "Dr" Houseman.

I do think this is a better movie than some are claiming but it can't be called great. It has good sections, and it has terrible sections, so overall it is just average, at best.

Read the original novel and you'll understand why this movie is so appalling. Enough said.

The Trailer Was Enough
3 December 2017
I watched the trailer right here on IMDb. That was enough to see the correctness of these reviews. In the space of less than two minutes you can witness the horrible, horrible acting; the ridiculous fight choreography; the pathetic dialogue. It has no redeeming qualities, and is actually offensive to all who served in the Vietnam conflict.

Thanks IMDb for saving me from the indignity of watching this vile rubbish.

Nothing more than mormon indoctrination: plain and simple
2 November 2017
I heard the premise and thought it sounded interesting, so started watching the first episode. Had my first "oh sh*t" moment when I saw it was co-created by the fundamentalist mormon, and extreme homophobe, Orson Scott Card. Then the character's names were revealed. Then, 20 minutes in, they had a flashback where they dropped everything to pray to god. Turned it off immediately, did some investigating, and discovered that BYUTV is the propaganda arm of Brigham Young University.

From what little I watched, the production values are adequate, and reflect the budget. The acting was acceptable, and the basic premise was intriguing. However, it is simply science fiction being used to promote mormon ideals.

Ihaka: Blunt Instrument (2000 TV Movie)
7/10
An above average Australian/New Zealand cop film.
7 November 2000
I hadn't planned on watching this movie, so I actually missed the first couple of minutes. However, from the moment Temuera Morrison's character, the "knuckle-dragging" Det. Sgt. Ihaka, appeared on screen, I found myself hooked. The film isn't very PC in places, most notably in Ihaka's no-nonsense attitude towards criminals or his superiors, nor is it going to win any awards but the acting was generally above average and the plot was intriguing. I especially liked Rebecca Gibney's character and found her to be superior to her Halifax F.P. character. The last 20 minutes have a couple of surprises and I liked the ending.

I should also note that a lot of the humour is very Antipodean, so those outside of Australia and New Zealand might not get it.
