X-Men (2000)
In 4 words: Waiting for the sequel!!!
What a great movie! We've got everything here: Action, comedy, plot, insider's jokes, great acting, great directing and amazing visual effects.
A few years back, "X-men", the 1992 animated series started broadcasting on TV in Israel, and I was hooked since episode one. That's where I know X-men from, I never read the comics. You could imagine my surprise and excitement when I heard they were making a movie! I've waited a long time, and finally, yesterday was the premiere of the movie in Israel. Of course, I went to the premiere. You think I'll wait to see this movie, even one more day, if I don't have to? Waiting for the commercials to finish 10 minutes after the designated starting time, I was full of expectations for the movie of the year, and might I say it fulfilled all of my expectations.
The movie started with the most beautiful computer graphics I have ever seen in my life. 5 seconds into this, and I'm thinking: "They should make a screen-saver out of this!!!".
Not much of the action-part in the beginning of the movie, it's more of the introduction of the characters Magneto, Rogue and Wolverine. There is the introduction of the plot as well, and I'm happy to say this is not one of those plot-less action movies, in style of "bang, boom, credits role".
Not to worry, though, the action will come. The fight scenes in this film are so great because of two reasons. One, the SCI-FI reality of X-men allows the director to go all out when it comes to what the characters can do. What makes the fights so awesome is the originality of the moves. Sure, you could have a great scene with Sylvester Stallone punching/kicking a guy. But isn't it way cooler when you see Storm strike her opponent with lightning, or watch Cyclops fry a villain with a laser beam shooting out of his eyes? The second thing that makes the fight scenes breath-taking is that the producers saved no expense with visual effects, without which all the mutant super-powers would not have made it through the screen.
Now, what I love most about a movie is it's ability to make me laugh, even while I'm in awe in the face of the effects. The script handled this beautifully, letting each and every one of the Wolverine-Cyclops exchanges be a hysterical comic relief. They talk, I laugh. They look at each other, I laugh. Humor, that's what I like in my men!
Which brings me to the actors. All the villains were hate-able, and all the heroes were loveable, but to one exception: Rogue. What can I say? I didn't like Rogue one bit. In the animated series Rogue was my favorite character, due to her much adored girl-power. Kick-ass chick with enough puns to go around, it's the Rogue I know and love. Where is she in this movie? She is obviously younger here than in the series, helpless and insecure. The way Anna Paquin acted her out, she reminded me more of Claire Danes than of Superwoman.
Have you noticed how James Marsden (Cyclops) had bristles on his cheeks to make him look older. I don't deny it, that babe does have a baby-face look, and it's what I love about him. Too bad he was hidden behind glasses throughout the movie, except for the occasional accident of dropping them and closing his eyes before he fries everything in front of him to the ground. Well, I guess that's just the price we have to pay to see this cutie as Cyclops.
Now I have nothing left to say except for my hopes for the sequel (may it come to us as soon as possible): 1. Rogue as an adult, played by someone else. 2. Gambit (my favorite male character) and his explosive cards. I also want him to take immediate interest in Rogue, because they were always my favorite couple. 3. More romance in the Cyclops-Jean Gray-Wolverine triangle. There is definitely much to be explored in that story. 4. Beast would be interesting to see in the movie, where was he in this one? 5. James Marsden, James Marsden, and more James Marsden. I just can't get enough of him! 6. More insider's jokes in the style of "What would you have prefered? Yellow spandex?". That line cracks me up every time I hear it!!! 7. More sequels!
Bottom line: Not just for X-men fans, but for anyone who likes action and science fiction.
Coyote Ugly (2000)
The Coolest! Something for everyone!
What a great movie!
Where do I begin raving about it? Well, for one, it's way cool. The bar scenes just put a smile on my face, no less! Flipping bottles, spraying the costumers with beer, dumping ice(!) on out-of-line drunks... It just makes you want to be there and do that, and the hell with computer-science!
Secondly, it's touching and romantic without being mushy or sickening. A beautiful love story, a simple love story. It's not one of those that-could-never-happen-in-real-life kind of stories. It's one of those that-could-happen-to-me kind of stories. Plus, he's cute and romantic, and has a beautiful Australian accent. What more could you ask for?
It is also an inspiring story of success, and overcoming your fears.
To sum it all up, it's a cool movie (did I mention this already?), with beautiful songs (I actually got goose bumps when Violet sang the last song, and that only happens when I hear a song I *really* like), a beautiful story, and some funny spots here and there to top the cool whipped cream with a comical cherry.
Bottom line: I gave it 10/10, and I wasn't being generous. It was that good!
An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)
Boring!!!
First of all, I saw this on TV. Well, actually, I saw half of it on TV, the first half, to be exact.
When I saw the commercial for it, I was psyched. One of my favorite guys on my favorite TV show is a werewolf. To be specific: The show is "Buffy tve Vampire Slayer", and the guy is Oz (seasons 2-4). So I was very excited to see a movie about werewolves.
And what a disappointment it was! It got really boring after the first wolf-night (with the party), and that was only about 30-40 minutes into the movie.
I didn't care much for the acting, either. And what was up with those freaky computer-generated-looking werewolves??? Their legs were bending all wrong, it was ridiculous! So an hour into the movie I just turned it off.
I gave this movie 3/10. And that's only because it had a nice soundtrack, and some parts with the 3 friends in the beginning made me laugh.
Bottom line: Forget it, there are better things you can do with an hour and a half. Go read a book.
Scary Movie (2000)
Eww, Yuck!
Oh, come on! Can you say "using sex for higher ratings"? If the writers could truly write a funny script, it wouldn't have needed SO MANY sex scenes to the extent of being really SICK!
It wasn't all that funny anyway, even though I saw most of the movies the parody was about. I definitely think the movie could have done with more jokes and less sex. I mean it, it was just too much! Don't go with your parents/children/siblings, cause you'll be in for a very uncomfortable and awkward time.
In my opinion, this movie wasn't worth the ticket, and it most definitely wasn't worth missing "Jesse" and "Veronica's Closet", two shows that were on TV while I was at this movie.
Bottom line: Forget about it, if you want a good comedy, see "The Whole Nine Yards", or any other movie, cause this one just isn't funny.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Excellent!
If you like comedies, if you like Matthew Perry, or if you like Bruce Willis - See this movie!
It's not hysterically funny the whole way through, but it was definitely satisfactorily funny, from Slapstick Comedy (bumping into doors/lamps/people, falling), to absurd lines and dialogues.
Matthew Perry plays Chandler Bing on the fabulous TV-series "Friends". Here he plays Chandler Bing under the name of Nicholas "Oz" Oseransky. He is also a dentist here, which he isn't on "Friends", but he can't fool me! I can spot Chandler a mile away, and there he was, only several feet from me. The same sarcasm, the occasional stutterring ("W-why? Why? Why?"), and the legendary "Oh My God" were all there pointing and Mr. Bing. The only difference between here and there is that he doesn't crack jokes. Well, you wouldn't either, if you were in his position. If you love him on "Friends", see this movie for an extra two hours of Chandler, with different friends.
And of course, there was Bruce Willis, charmingly funny as he always is ("Die Hard", "Hudson Hawk"), absolutely born for the part.
Bottom line: It's worth a movie ticket, it's worth the rental, and it's definitely worth two hours of watching it on TV!
The Craft (1996)
Bewitching fun for parties!
Cool movie! It's fun to see if you like a-little-scary movies, and if you like witch-craft (in my opinion witch-craft is very cool, so I really enjoyed it!).
I saw it twice on TV, and it was just as enjoyable the second time, although a bit less scary, because I knew what's going to happen.
If you hate witch-craft, don't watch it. Otherwise, it's a fun movie. I recommend it for parties and sleep-overs.
My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988)
Stupid movie with one great Alyson Hannigan
Oh, please! Give me a break. For a scientist, Steven (Dan Akroyd) is a pretty dumb guy. With all of her strange behavior, and his daughter (Alyson Hannigan) screaming it at him, he still couldn't realize that Celeste (Kim Basinger) is an Alien??? Besides that, the movie also insults the viewer's intelligent with the dumbest scenes you have ever seen. The only reason I watched it is to see Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green, who are actors from my favorite show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Alyson looked exactly like she does now, although Seth looks totally different. If you're a Buffy fan, it's worth seeing the hole stupid movie for the few scenes that they're in. But don't rent it. Watch it on TV, or get it from a friend that has it on tape, cause it's just not worth the money!
The '60s (1999)
GREAT!!!
Great, great, great! That is all I can say about that movie, but imdb want at least four lines of text so I'll elaborate. The cast was great (Jerry O'connel is soooo cute!), the music was great (The sixties had the best music ever, imho), the historical material was interesting, and so was the way they made the actors of the '90s seem like they were actually there in the '60s. And most of all - the stories of the main characters brought tears to my eyes, and that is the greatness of any drama. BUT IN ONE WORD: GREAT!
That Thing You Do! (1996)
Great music!
I just saw the film on TV, and really enjoyed it. It warms your heart to see kids like these who are so passionate about their art. Plus the movie has a great soundtrack. The song 'That Thing You Do' makes you wanna get up and dance, and so do most of the songs in the movie (and, in my opinion, most of the songs in the 60's!). Bottom line - it's worth dancing, uh... I mean, watching!
Down to You (2000)
Terrible Movie
I found the movie quite lame. It's plot-less, not funny, not touching, not fascinating. I don't even think it was worth paying for (I saw it in the movie theater). I say: If you really want to see it - Wait till it's shown on TV!
