Casino Royale (2006)
Piece of $#&%!!!!
When I walked into the theaters to see this movie I was not expecting much, but, Wow, what a piece of crap!
This movie does in no way meet the high standards set by the other Bond movies. Some say that it is still a good action flick, but hey, which movie did those people watch? Well, I suppose not this movie, or they've maybe fallen asleep during those awfully boring poker scenes. That would explain how some say, that it could go through as a "good" action movie. Because if you cut out that poker crap, you really have some decent action here, but those fifteen minutes can't help the movie.
So, in order to help those fans, that still want to see the movie, to save some money, I'll round up the story now:
Bond kills one guy in a loo, then kills another guy in an office.
Music.
Bond kills a terrorist after chasing him. (Until now roughly ten minutes have passed)
Bond plays Poker, and does some advertising for SONY, OMEGA and FORD. (Now there are only 20 minutes to the end)
The bad guy captures Bond and his Lady, tortures him and gets killed by another bad guy that has not yet been introduced to us.
Bond awakes in a hospital, travels to Venice with his girl. A house collapses, she gets killed and Bond kills the other bad guy that inexplicably seems to be the mastermind.
And I paid money for that!
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Well, not the exactly THE masterpiece we waited for...
The movie isn't (as I said above) the masterpiece we've been waiting for all the time. The has some quite boring scenes (The love story thing at Elron's House and those stupidly long traveling-parts) that make this movie a bit too long (if you cut this scenes it would be half an hour shorter). Also some of the scenes (especially the one with the ringwraiths in the bedroom) looked like a direct copy from the old animated movie. So, this movie isn't true to the hype that was made about it, but it is still a good but long movie.
U-571 (2000)
Good plain action, but nothing more...
*May contain Spoilers*
This is a well done action movie, but nothing more...
Of course I did not expect a historically accurate movie (because it was made in Hollywood), but what I didn't expect was that the entire history of naval warfare in WW2 was rewritten for this movie.
Since everybody has talked about that the Brits captured the Enigma, I don't have to criticize this anymore. We all know that the only historical American effort worth talking about is... well I can't remember... please ask me later...
But there are some other things I want to criticize...
1.) How did the Americans decipher the distress call from the German sub without the Enigma?
2.) Why did the other (submerged) German sub sink the disguised US-sub? The disguise was perfect enough to fool the surfaced German sub.
3.) In WW2 German torpedoes did only work against surfaced targets. How did they sink the other (submerged) German sub?
4.) How can six Americans with no knowledge of German language and German submarine technology handle a BROKEN German sub which was designed for a crew of 50 well trained soldiers?
5.) The Reichsmarine had only large battleships, small cruisers, torpedo-boats or supply-cruisers, they had no destroyers. Also all German Battleships in the Atlantic did sink before 1942. How could the Sub have been attacked by a German destroyer?
6.) Why should a German destroyer chase a German sub?
7.) German Subs did not have any Sonar!
8.) Why should a German sub-crew attack shipwrecked enemies? This would have been a waste of ammo. This sounds harsh but is the truth.
But despite these (and some other points) it is still a well done action movie, but really not more...
Es geschah am hellichten Tag (1958)
Nearly 50 years old, but still a current topic...
The story of the perverted child murderer SCHROTT (Fröbe) and his hunter MATTHAEI (Rühmann) is still thrilling and frightening. The present events ensure that the story remains current. Fröbe and Rühmann can show their acting skills (what they were not always allowed to do).
To keep it short:
Ingenious actors in a great film, which is based on a great book, that was written by an ingenious author.
I'm waiting for the Hollywood-remake.
Captain Future (1978)
Cult!!!!!!! With emphasis on "!".
Well, what can I say? This series is just cult. When you are German, and you haven't at least heard of this series, then you must be dead or deaf, dumb and blind! In the beginning of the eighties at least every second child in West Germany spent its childhood in front of the TV-set watching this show (and after it "Ein Colt fuer alle Faelle" with Lee Mayors at 05.15 PM [I remember it as if it was yesterday!]). The show got most of its flair from the brilliant sound track which was done by Christian Bruhn.
The Protector (1985)
A disappointing experience for Jackie....
This movie was the reason why Jackie didn't do a movie in the US for about 13 years (This is what Jackie said in an interview for the German DVD-release of "WHO AM I"). He was so deeply disappointed with this movie, that he reshot a lot of the scenes when he returned to Hong Kong.
And now for my experience:
I have seen nearly all Jackie Chan movies, and I wanted to see this one too. So I rented this one, although a friend told me that I would puke afterwards. And my friend was right.
If you see it, you can also understand why Jackie didn't make movies in the US for such a long time.... Believe me!
So weit die Füße tragen (1959)
The greatest German TV-Show ever ...
The true story of the odyssey of the Wermacht-Soldier Clemens Forell (Weiss), who flew from a soviet pow-camp in Siberian, was the biggest milestone in the history of the West-German TV. "So weit ..." was a so called "Strassenfeger" (road sweeper), because nobody wanted to miss a part of this show, and so the roads were empty at this time. Only a few years before the last prisoners returned from Russia, so the subject of this show was still fresh. Many people hoped that their husbands or sons could have done what Forell had done.
Only a few TV-shows rose reactions like this and grow this popular in Germany. The shows which grow so popular like "So weit ..." even have been exported to other countries or have been remade, among these shows are "Stahlnetz" (Dragnet), "Das Millionenspiel" (The Running Man) or Derrik, but "So weit die Fuesse tragen" never was sold to an TV-station in a English speaking country.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
This Anime is not very typical...
I have never seen an Anime like this. While the typical Animes are full of action and humor, this one is very silent and sad. In a war every battling party says:"We have justice on our side and that we are battling for the right thing!", but the story of Seita and Setsuko shows you that this is not right, and that you can't find justice in a war, because only the innocent have to suffer from war and not the politicians who started it.
