Madhumati (1958)
Beautiful love story
Bimal Roy's movies were invariable a tragedy. In this movie he tried to make a happy ending story. Music being the hallmark of his movie, takes the centerstage here too. The song 'suhana safar...' was put to get that romantic touch and happiness into the movie. But invariable that tinge of sadness is apparent.
Madhubala at her best and what to say of Dilip Kumar, better watch it. And for those non-Indian viewers, look for the song 'bichuva..' .
Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)
Marriage video
The user rating says it all. This is supposed to be the biggest hit of Indian film history! Sorry I saw it only after 2 years and it was still running full, and I din't like it. Reason : its not the original. The story was borrowed form a Telugu classic 'Abhinandana'. It was a tragedy and hence not so salable. The director cleverly moulded the story with a happy ending.
It looks like a typical marwari marriage party with the all the ingredients: Big family, happy family, no bad guys. The story is thin line and moves form one song to another, with some funny tricks added, like the old trial and test methods. This is no food for the head movie.
It is solely for family entertainment, a picnic and a money spinning machine.
Not recommended for serious viewing.
Geetha (1973)
Another tragedy
This looks like another run of the mill kannada movie. Except that, this one was the first original story of its kind. Geetha is the name of the main lead, who happens to fall in love with a singer (Shankar Nag). After initial hiccups the two finally look for each other only to know that Geetha has a blood cancer. This happens to be the second time tragedy for the hero.
The film is immortal in the kannada film history for its music by Illairaja the maestro. Many of the songs like "Jotheyelli" are the heart throbing songs of young couples.
Madhavacharya (1986)
Enlightening
This movie is part of the triolgy of G.V.Iyer. His other works include 'Adi Sankaracharya' and 'Ramanujacharya'. This low budget movie has been completed with good historic accuracies of the date and time. In fact it looks like a documentary of sort. To understand the theme however, a deeper knowledge of the Indian philosophy is needed. As such this movie is made on one of the three greatest saints and philosophers of India in the past 2000 years! To put it in a nut shell, Madhvacharya was a saint around the time 11-12 century approximately who preached the 'Dwitha' (Two) concept. It meant that Human soul and He are not the same. This philosophy contradicted that of Shankara (900-1000 AD) who advocated the 'Aadwitha' (One or not two), which says that Human soul and God are one and the same.
The movie has been shot realistically, like the 12 century India and has only one song 'Vandevandyam'. This songs is the masterpiece of the saint which gives you a spiritual 'Kick'.
After watching this work I found all other movies to be trash...
Mausam (1975)
Memorable music, and lyric
The movie is overshadowed by its music. When you listen to Gulzar's songs, it creates an image, which is unique from every other. For this movie he has aptly chosen a Galzal of Galib "Dil dhundhta hai phir ohi phursath ke raat din". This single song steels the show. It creates an atmosphere where a lonely person is looking for his lost soul in the valley of himalay. The films main character could have been justified by none other than Sanjeev Kumar. And a brilliant music by Madan mohan, all add to the charm.
Only people who can understand the subtilities of Hindi lyrics can truly enjoy this movie.
Arth (1982)
Good movie by Bhatt
This is one of the best movies directed by Bhatt. This slow moving movie is dotted with some excellent Gazals sung by Jagjith sing. A good performance again from Shabana Azmi keeps the show going. But personally, I felt the story to be a little dragging. Arth is supposed to be the most popular 'Art' movie among the masses! Strictly recommended for hearing the songs!!
