U.S. Seals (2000 Video)
U.S. Seals stink and sink
20 January 2003
Well, I'm a huge action movie buff. I've come to expect a little artistic license on the part of filmmakers as to what certain action figures do. After all, it makes an otherwise bland story exciting. After watching U.S. Seals, though, I think some take that license too far.

the movie started out okay, the acting wasn't too bad and the dialogue not terrible. The plot was about as watery as the Pacific and held water like the Titanic but that's acceptable for an action movie. But then it got really bad. The unit, which passes itself off to be part of the world renowned U.S. Navy SEALs takes things into its own hands after their leader's wife gets killed. Things go from bad to stupid when the Seals invade the crooks lair. I don't know what kind of bullets the bad-guys were using but they were causing explosions around the "heroes." Also, they attacked several pill-boxes with hand-grenades without anyone getting hit.... yeah, that's plausible. Then, there's the ammo issue... the issue would be around 120 rounds each. There must have been at least 120 guys to kill so I fail to see how they didn't run out somewhere. I don't remember seeing them reload once.

In brief, this was a terrible movie... almost as bad as its sequel.

Great Flick!
2 December 2001
This movie is one of my favorites this year, beating out Shrek by a small margin created by that heart-stopping flight-evasives sequence.

Going into the theatre, I was expecting an "okay" action movie but instead I got much more! This was a GREAT action movie (and my being an action fan gives this movie a few more points). The acting was top notch, even Wilson gave a better performance than I thought he would; the special effects were brilliant and the camera angles made it feel more realistic. I don't understand the people who didn't like the camera running behind Wilson because I found it brought me into the film. Instead of sitting in a theatre, I was running through the Yugoslavian tundra with Lt. Burnette.

The best thing, though, is that this movie is extremely heavy on the artillery! When the Serbs are shooting at Burnette, they aren't just firing rifles but they have cannons, WITH proper sound effects! At the end, the final battle is breath-taking, a real masterpiece of filming.

Overall, this movie was a great action flick - the story doesn't go too deep, its fairly predictable without being overly so, the acting is great (a plus for action-flicks) and the direction wonderful. If you like Action movies, then this is for you. If you prefer something with a storyline then go see Harry Potter, you panzy :)

Sharpe: Sharpe's Revenge (1997)
Season 5, Episode 1
8/10
You know who I am, my name is Sharpe
10 May 2001
This outing for Richard Sharpe wants for little. Although there are no big battle scenes, it still looks good. Compared to the book, it follows pretty well (all the best Sharpe films do) and it is nice to see that Cornwell's story is not butchered, like in Gold. I haven't seen this movie for quite a while now but I enjoyed it when I did and if you are a Sharpe fan, which I darn well hope you are, then you should get to one of those really really good video stores and rent this title, along with the others. They are best watched in order... Rifles, Eagle, Company, Enemy, Honour, Gold, Battle, Sword, Regiment, Siege, Mission, Revenge, Justice, Waterloo.

Space Cowboys (2000)
Fantastic Fun! A must see!
7 August 2000
Warning: Spoilers
Some reviewers have trashed this movie because of its plot flaws and lack of reality check. But that's just not the point of this movie! Come on, people! Four geriatrics going into space is not supposed to be taken seriously! IMHO, the plot line was one of the best this summer. It left me wondering what was going on at every turn! It wasn't American Beauty calibre but still worth the watch. Clint, James, Donald and Tommy put on brilliant performances and almost made me believe that they were like that in real life. No more playing the middle-aged hero for these four! They were grumpy old men on a mission and the comedy of it has you rolling in the aisles! I was laughing so hard that I couldn't care less about the weaker elements of the movie. At one point the whole audience broke out into cheers and applause. (SPOILER AHEAD...) and that was when the team got one over on the youngsters in the cafeteria.

The special effects were well done, the plot line was interesting if not completely sound--it was predictable with the shuttle simulation and the cancer thing what would happen in the end. The acting was great, even though Tommy Lee did his usual monotone fast-paced run-down thing and Clint was as quiet as usual. If you want two hours of pure entertainment, go see this movie.
