This film is truly disturbing.
23 July 2011
Rob educates us all on how depraved the imagination can be. If you are reading this you likely already know this is a film almost always scored a one or a ten. In the end my vote is ten as it affected me in a way as no other before or since. This film haunted me for days after the viewing.

If they gave Oscars for being scary, then this one would have cleaned house. Sid Haig really makes the film. Bill Moseley is very solid and Mrs. Zombie is quite creepy as well. It truly is amazing that this was only Rob's second film, though I must admit I'm not eagerly adding additional Rob Zombie flicks to the queue.

The sad fact is I could never watch it again, it was simply too well done. It feels truly like a nightmare throughout. This is a hundred minutes of agony you will wish you could wake from.

Painfully close to greatness

Warning: Spoilers
Part of the problem with this movie is that it doesn't trust the audience to imagine anything. Instead the director wants to show us.. For example the red knight that symbolizes repressed memories. To me the visual metaphor seemed very hokey. I can conjure far more terrifying visions from my own nightmares. Again with the murder scene. Anyone with a significant other can appreciate the trauma seeing him/her murdered would do. I didn't need the rather cheesy special effects to pound that home. Both flawed attempts at showing us what the characters were/had seen only detracted from the experience for me.

The second nail in the coffin was my failure to connect with the characters. It was strange to watch a movie from the era where Williams over-acted as was so popular in the 90s (witness the rise of Jim Carey). In the end despite an energetic performance by Robin, it is hard to "buy" his character. That coupled with the borderline believability of several other characters goes a long ways towards sinking what is essentially a character drama.

The real shame here is that the move had great potential and an above average plot. It just didn't feel well executed. 6/10, worth renting if you have made it through the top 250 already.

Suffers from the middle child syndrom

Great special effects, decent acting, story is a bit weaker then the first movie however. A lot of the character development seemed forced, it just didn't "flow" in some places. I enjoyed it overall and I'm glad I went, but it wasn't earth shattering.

If you loved Hitchcock, and hated all but the first 5 minutes of Scream...

...then this movie is for you. The movie was just plain creepy, and it kept me guessing till the end. It felt like something hitchcock would produce if he where alive today. It isn't quite The Shining, but it is definitely worth the rental if you enjoy really really creepy movies.

Entertaining, but no master piece.

I saw this movie back when it came out in the theater. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed. It was funny and original, but it surely wasn't oscar material. We caught an early show. Then, unsatisfied, we drove forty miles to another theater to catch a midnight showing of Air Force One... Air Force One was a much better movie.

Good, but not great.

Really great dramas leave you speechless. Good dramas you leave wondering why your not. This was a good movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it was missing something. There is just something about a movie like Braveheart or (don't laugh) Titanic that just rips your guts apart. They made me cry, as where I never came close in the Patriot. The pain and the joy just didn't come through for some reason. At almost three hours long, I can't see myself watching it again anytime soon, as where I've watched Braveheart a dozen times, thrice in the theater. That said, it beats the hell out of 85% of the movies I see.

I'm not sure what more you could ask for in a movie. Lots of blood and guts if you are into that. A love story or two (albeit twisted a bit), action, suspense, and lots of light and dark comedy. Maybe it is just me, but I really don't see what more you could want.
