perhaps not the best title to go with...
7 May 2003
Too many movies these days make a woman the central character and shows all their problems etc. But its time movies were made about men, and finally this film has and its quite observant. Women should recognise that most of the things they dont like about the way theyre portrayed and treated is all theyre doing. Men are blamed, treated like s*** and still expected to be there solely for the women....This film shows the impact of such a society on a normal, well educated guy. Michael DeGood did a great job. The ending was laughable, but the director has alot of talent and potential and with a little more money will surely show what he's capable of. Its rare that a movie on late on cable will grab your attention enough that you are suddenly in the thick of the story and wanting to actually watch the whole thing.

Underrated
31 May 2002
I didn't know anything about this movie before watching it, except that Drew Barrymore divorces her parents. I think that could be why I found the movie so surprising. But the movie has so many elements that make it one of the strongest films of its type. It's completely engrossing, showing realistically how a marriage can go from highs to lows and that each party can be responsible. It also shows how selfish parents can be and how without realising it they can screw with a child (drew). After watching this film I came to IMDB to see if shelley long or ryan o'neal had won oscars for their performances and if the film won best picture, but apparently it was shunned and not many people have seen it....at least there's cable. It looked like a lot of effort went into making the movie, so it's a shame it's been overlooked.

What went wrong??
22 February 2002
This movie was a massive failure. When I go to a movie about somebody I know almost nothing about, I expect to know a fair bit about that person after the movie is over. Well I still know very little about Ali. At the end of most scenes, I asked myself "what just happened?" or "what did he/she say?". This is not a good sign. In interviews, Will Smith said he had to learn all about being muslim....why??? I learnt absolutely nothing about it from this movie, just that apparently the leaders of the faith wanted Ali's money. Michael Mann's "The Insider" was a terrific movie that gave me tremendous insight into that situation. So why has he failed this time?

Very good, not Great though.
22 February 2002
This is a very well made film examining loss of a child amongst other things. However, the film gets a little too slow at times during the middle section, but it does pick up. Tom Wilkinson was excellent, as was Marisa Tomei. Yet, Sissy Spacek was dissappointing; looking as if she was bored or just disinterested by the subject matter. She explodes in one scene, and I think that scene is why everybody says she deserves an Oscar, but she wasn't great throughout the whole film. Give it to Nicole Kidman, who had to sing, dance, fall in love and die amongst other things. Anyway, that said, its still way above average.

Hollywood rewrites history yet again
14 October 2000
Steven Spielberg has such an enormous ego that he thinks he can slab a few cardboard characters together, make one of them Tom Hanks (who cannot act to save his life) and whooppee another Oscar and $200+ million bucks will come his way. Unfortunately, the uneducated, buy anything that is told to them by a screen American public justifies his ego by buying tickets to his films. Saving Private Ryan is just another war film written by an ambitious, highly paid writer hoping to slap a few scenes together with as little thought as possible and win an Oscar as a result. If this movie was released in 1999 it wouldn't have been nominated for anything. If you want to see a GOOD movie, go see Girl, Interrupted, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia or even Toy Story 2! They are all FAR superior to this attempt at saying to Americans "we won the war, with no help whatsoever, and we beat the rest of the world, yippi!" If Americans knew the REAL TRUTH, Oprah would have to extend her contract another 10 years just to talk about it with her brainwashed, braindead American housewife viewers.

Avoid
15 September 2000
One of the absolute worst movies ever made, this trash stars the ugly Melissa Joan Hart, who should stick to tv where the expectations aren't as high. Some of the supporting actors are really terrible, whilst a couple of them are above this kind of stuff. It's no surprise that the best the writer of this could come up with was a finale at a big dance, because the rest of the movie sounds like any pre schooler could have written this movie in their sleep! The reason these types of movies flop at the box office is because instead of making something worth making, the people involved in this trash just think about the money and the swarm of teenagers that will waste their money watching it. But teenagers are smarter than that and that's why hardly anybody saw this.

Interesting Movie
12 August 2000
Although I had heard about a hundred reviews of this all saying that it was atrocious, I went to see it anyhow. The only problems I had with this movie was the little girl (really annoying!) especially in this one scene where she's appearing and disappearing and makes an incredible amount of noise in the process! The other problem is that it's a little slow in parts, and one other thing is that the camera focuses on certain things which aren't important. But the girl does vanish I dont know where. Anyway, I have read a lot of the reviews for this film on IMDB and most say the plot is incomprehensible and confusing. Was I watching the same movie!? It was so easy to follow! Anyone who says otherwise is really stupid and need to pay closer attention when they go to a movie and not just expect everything to be told to them by the main characters etc.! I found this movie really interesting, and I guess you do have to treat this as a MOVIE and that it's probably not going to happen for real. Ashley Judd and Ewan Mcgregor are excellent and the direction is, while experimental, very good. The constant changes of scenery are fun too. If you're thinking of watching this, do so when you're ready, not when your expecting to be entertained by some dimwiited script and actors.

Best comedy in a LONG time
23 July 2000
I keep watching this movie because it is always as funny as the first time i saw it. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino bring this funny script and make it their movie. I like the fact that Romy and Michelle tell the popular girls what they think of them. It's probably the funniest movie i've seen that I can remember. With dialogue like "i cut my foot and my shoe is filling up with blood" who couldn't like this! A great revenge movie.

X-Men (2000)

Finally a Good Summer Movie
15 July 2000
For so long audiences have had to put up with alot of crap during the American summer. Eg. Wild Wild West, well basically anything will Will Smith. But finally a movie like X-Men has come along to hopefully show what a big budget studio CAN do if it actually tries to make the movie work effectively, rather than just shove a big name into a bad script and expect $20 million in the first weekend. X Men is different because A. It's well written, with good dialogue and characters you care about B. uses its budget to show special effects that other films are too lazy to show and C. when you walk out of the theater you don't feel ripped off AGAIN! I praise the filmmakers also for allowing people like me who have no idea what X Men was when they entered the cinema to understand where all the characters have come from and to finally enjoy what they can do.
