Archon Defender (2009)
Watch for Krupicz in the future
In all probability, reiddebster40, you saw the version with the original cast. I did too and I would agree with you; however, when the film was submitted to the Mississauga Independent Film Festival, the organisers insisted that Krupicz re-voice the film. My understanding is that he initially objected because he felt he would alienate some of his friends but eventually agreed. He re-voiced all of the characters in the film. I believe it won the award for Best Animated Feature at that festival. IMDb lists only one award but I am fairly certain that it has won awards in other festivals.
I saw the second version of the film and it is considerably better. I hope it gets wider distribution than it has had up to now because Krupicz is doing some fine work.
I also saw his second film, Origin: A Call to Minds in which he used many of the same actors as the second version of this one. He is showing some great progress.
Speed (1994)
An unintended comedy
I could hardly stop laughing pretty well throughout this film. It's hilarious. If it had been intended as a comedy, I probably would have given it about 6 or 7 out of 10. Since it is listed as an action thriller, it gets a 3.
Wrongfully Accused (1998)
Silly fun
Wrongfully Accused is so silly it's fun to watch. It makes fun of just about every well-known cliché, movie and TV program ever produced -- from Casablanca and The Fugitive to Charlie's Angels and Baywatch. It's not great comedy or subtle satire -- just pie-in-the-face stuff and nonsense. This is the kind of material that shows Leslie Nielsen at his best. He has a real knack for the completely illogical, inane antics of a buffoon.
If you're in the mood for slapstick clowning about instead of "meaningful" comedy or satire, give this movie a look.
Mother's Boys (1993)
Not worth the time
While it has its moments, this is not a very good movie. The story is not believable, the acting is spotty, the direction is formula, the "climax" is more amusing than suspenseful and the denouement is unfulfilling.
The best parts are the sudden imaginary shots, giving you a rush of adrenaline before you realise that it's just the character's imagination playing tricks.
Vertical Limit (2000)
If you go, remember--you can't ever recover the two hours
This has got to be one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen. It is filled with inconsistencies, totally unrealistic situations and "dramatic foreshadowing" that would have a six-year-old sniggering at it. Suspension of disbelief is one thing; this movie takes that phrase to the vertical limit.
This movie gets a "1" (if I could have given it a "0", I would have).
Hand in Hand (1961)
If you get the chance, see it.
I, too, saw this movie when it came out and I have never forgotten its message. It was this movie that made me realise that pretty well all monotheistic religions (apart from the fanatics) are essentially saying the same thing; they just have different ways of saying it. It helped me develop greater religious tolerance than I likely would have developed in its absence.
Most of the images in the movie have faded from my memory, save a few. One in particular was the moment when the boy goes to visit the synagogue and the star of David on the side of the building just jumps out at him. You can imagine the impact that it has on him, having been raised in a strict Roman Catholic environment with a crucifix as the dominant symbol.
As a little bit of trivia, in the 60's, I had heard that Orson Welles had a small, uncredited, cameo appearance in this movie. The shot was a long one, taken from the rear of the church with Welles as a priest at the altar with his back to the camera. I have never been able to confirm this. His filmography in this data base doesn't mention it, nor does the writeup on the film itself.
Trivia aside, this is an excellent movie and, although I have seen it only once, it remains one of the cinematic highlights of my life. I don't think that it has ever played in a movie theatre near me since its initial run, much to my disappointment.
A Fine Romance (1981)
Charming
This is a delightful British comedy about two people who are too shy and insecure to reveal their true feelings to one another. It's a treat to see Judi Dench a bit earlier in her career. She also gives us a preview to her character in "As Time Goes By". It's a pity that they made so few episodes of this charming series.
Two's a Mob (1998)
Not worth the time. A few good moments, but generally boring.
Quite honestly, the best things about this movie are its title and tagline. It has a few moments (including a fairly decent spoof of Marlon Brando with a cute twist at the end of an interview with a father who complains about his daughter's boyfriend) but it isn't really worth the time unless you find it interesting to try to identify locations in it (this is a favourite pastime of many Canadians watching a Canadian-made movie). I was bored after about fifteen minutes and struggled through the rest, desperately trying to keep an open mind, but having a lot of trouble maintaining much focus on it.
