Independence Day (1996)
Was it worth it?
This movie makes my skin crawl. It is just a formula Hollywood blockbuster, with more gloss than most, that has the Hollywood perception that America is all conquering. 'Don't worry, the world is being attacked by (bad) aliens, but America (the good guys) will save the day'. Who, or what, would dare to beat the great USA, after all good always wins over evil. This is not the only movie to convey this message, it is just that Independence Day is so in your face. The movie had an enormous budget and was extremely over hyped.
Ed Wood (1994)
An extremely funny film about a real life director.
A film about Ed Wood, who was supposed to be 'the worst director of all time', does not sound too promising. Especially as it is shot in black and white. However this is a must see master piece, that actually makes you want to go and watch Ed Wood's movies. This is an extremely funny, and well made film, that I can't recommend enough.
The Marrying Man (1991)
One for a rainy day.
This movie on the face of it is complete rubbish. Harmless rubbish, but rubbish all the same. However it does have the redeeming feature of being extremely funny in places. The wacky story line makes this enjoyable, if unrealistic. The film is worth watching, just don't expect anything earth moving.
Stand by Me (1986)
River Phoenix at his best.
This is a story of four young boys going on a journey to find a dead body. On the way however they learn more about the journey of life, realising that the journey was more important than the destination. This is a brilliant coming of age tale, that is very easy and fun to watch.
Hercules in New York (1970)
A comedy classic.
Many people have asked how and why I like this movie. The answer is that it is so bad, it's good. Yes it is probably one of the worst movies of all time, but the films many short comings make it extremely funny. If you don't believe a movie can be so bad it's good, avoid this film with a barge pole. If however, like me, you do, this is a comical classic. The plot, music and acting are terrible. Arnie is dubbed, and heaven looks suspiciously like central park. How this got made, I don't know, just be grateful it did.
Get Carter (1971)
Simply one of the best movies of all time
Michael Caine at his best. This is a must see film, and a true cult classic. Everything about this film just works. From the dreary Newcastle landscape, the instantly recognisable sound track, and the realistic way this film is portrayed.
