King Kong (2005)
5/10
A great pop-corn movie
2 January 2006
I have just come back after watching three hours of an homage to the Kong. My feelings are mixed, the movie is definitely well made and the special effects are spectacular. The cast is very good and it works well, especially Jack Black and Naomi Watts.

On the other hand the movie is way too long. Granted the shots of New York and all the close ups of KK are great, all the small details like KK's expression, cuts, hair etc. are perfect but nevertheless the movie is just too long. There are shots of KK that just move slow and are quite long. I generally like long movies (LOTR being some of them)but this movie would benefit if it was shorten by at least 30-45 minutes.

Gettysburg (1993)

A very good movie.

I saw this movie years ago on TNT and I thought very well of it. I thought it to be a bit long but other than that it was a very good movie with an excellent cast.

After visiting the actual battlefield in early June (I suggest to you anyone that has a chance to do so, it is a great experience), my interest was renewed. Sitting on top of the little round top and looking down and around the hill I could envision the 20th Maine. Looking over the grounds where Pickett's Charge took place I could hear the canon's thunder and the bullets flying by.

This movie captures the essence of the battle and it has to be long in order to do so. The torment of the Generals was more than apparent throughout the movie. The emotions run deep and the actors did a very good job of conveying them. The soundtrack complemented the movie a 100% and gave the right accents at the right moments. The cinematography was awesome and accurate, since a lot was filmed on location. The acting is great and the reenactors should also be praised for their participation.

If you watch this movie and criticize its historical inaccuracies you will miss the point. It does the best job it can, to give you the feel and overview of the entire battle.

You will be crying at some point, for all the men lost in vain in the civil war. The most terrible kind of war in which brothers, relatives or friends face each other with the intend to kill each other. You will also realize the heavy burden of the officers leading their men to a battle where their death is most surely waiting.

Above all, the film will tell us how insane we are as a human race. We organize ourselves and develop weapons in order to mass destruct each other. Over 50000 men died in three days, how many mothers, wives and families were destroyed as a consequence is something for all of us to think about. One thing is certain, it is a very high price to pay for any cause no matter how `sacred' or `right' this cause may be.

Look at me I am mumbling on with my emotions and thoughts that have emanated from the movie. Watch the movie, for all its shortcomings; it is still right up there with Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

Space Cowboys (2000)

A fantastic homage to some of the greatest!!!

One of the few movies that I saw back to back, now that may not mean much to you but if you watch this movie you will know what I mean. It has a very, very good cast both in the leading in the supporting roles. It delivers some of the funniest (but also very true to life) lines. Like the one when Frank (Clint Eastwood) first meets Bob Gerson (James Cromwell): "Clock's ticking, Bob. And I'm only getting older." I think the fact that everyone of us knows and understand the theme of the movie make this movie so enjoyable. We can correlate to the fact that we all are getting older and once we are older the younger ones will make fun of us. In addition there is a side of us men (sorry, ladies) that never really grows beyond teenage and that is also a very funny aspect/theme in the movie.

Other factors that made me watch the movie back to back, besides the themes, the funny punch lines and all the irony involved you will get to enjoy a very stunning cinematography. The scenes in space are amazing, probably the best I have seen, the level of realism in costume and set design seem to be high. Of course the performances are nothing less than stunning and the soundtrack complements the movie very well. There will be people saying that the plausibility of the script is very thin but then what did you expect? It serves the purpose to make one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever watched.

Bizzare, unique, confusing but still funny and entertaining!

Another masterpiece from the Coen brothers! The Big Lebowski and O' Brother are very similar in that they take a seemingly "boring" story and turn it into a very entertaining and funny movie! The movie has its low points, sure almost every movie does but this movie delivers good laughs through its witty dialog and the irony. The performances are excellent, the music is wonderful and the cinematography is stunning! I think that this is a must watch movie but if you did not like the Big Lebowski you should not bother with it!

Hilarious, interesting and unique!

I have seen this movie more than a dozen times, I often just play it on the DVD while I am doing something else... why? ....Well,... ...this movie is unlike any other one I have ever watched. You cannot really categorize it in a particular genre! It is unique, it is funny, the performances are outstanding and the story line is very original. The best thing about the story itself is its simplicity (for the lack of a better word). This movie does not try to teach us, or get a point across, it is just about dude's life who enjoys doing nothing. Now the Coens took dude's life and turned it to one of the funniest, wittiest and most amusing movie of all times. The soundtrack complements the story very well (the Coens always seem to have the perfect touch for their soundtrack choice) and Sam Elliot's voice for the narration was the perfect choice. That being said I just have to watch the movie again.....
