Albion: The Enchanted Stallion (2016)
Slow but with really great dialogue
First off, the dialogue was hilarious and probably improvised on the fly with the help of John Cleese. It was very Pythonesc and fans of the Holy Grail would get a kick out of many of the scenes. Unfortunately, what the film needed was a faster pace and probably a more visionary director who could have taken this film to become the next Time Bandits. I did enjoy what I got, but couldn't help but see what this movie could have been.
Get Out (2017)
Kudos to a very clever film
I loved this movie. Yes, it was very entertaining and funny, but that's not where my praise comes from. What I truly enjoyed about this movie was the complete turnaround of the dialog that was heard throughout when you later discover what is really going on. It does it's best to make you think it's about the subtle racism one feels or imagines when in a place filled with people of another race or culture not your own, and this movie does masterfully mislead you towards that all so familiar path that other like films do with a racist agenda.
However, there's a clever twist, for it to be about racism one group must feel superior, hate, or fear toward another, but the subject of the film was not about feelings of supremacy, nor other such malice towards another group but instead its envy. When this realization hits you, it makes you think about everything that was said before and find it was all along taking you to a different road entirely, and it was your own experiences whether it be from life experiences or agendas of other like movies that blinded you to where you were going. This introspective is what I found most amusing and refreshing.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Long boring dreck made from parts of better movies.
The movie doesn't start well, in fact the first 10 minutes of the movie, I turned to my group watching it, and say wait isn't this? At which point they all responded with Dracula, as we were all thinking the same thing. The movie continues on to borrow more scenes from Dracula, Frankenstein, the Phantom of the Opera, and so many more less classic movies that there was a lot of - wait isn't that from? Unfortunately, it didn't even try to put those movies together in any kind of cohesive narrative, and was so predictable that you will know how it ends halfway through, but are forced to sit through another hour and 15 minutes of a clichéd dull plot that at the end if you're still awake can unsatisfyingly say to yourself I knew it.
Another thing was that most of the score consisted with a song that sounded like Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy", so much so I could have sworn that was the music being played except with the lyrics replaced by "lalalala". Turns out reading the credits they didn't credit Nat King Cole's song, so it must have been a poor rendition of it. And that in a nutshell was how I explained my dislike of this movie to a friend, I told him that the movie felt just like that, a poor rendition of much better films.
Don't get me wrong, I love classic horror, but this doesn't stand a candle among the movies it takes from, and bored me to tears and exhaustion. Skip it, you can get more entertainment from watching wallpaper dry.
Silent Hill (2006)
Just saw it, I didn't hate it...
There was just a lot of parts I didn't like - mainly the scenes containing Sean Bean. I also didn't like a certain costume choice - I know the cop in Silent Hill wore leather pants too, but still.
That said it really did feel like the game. The sets were amazingly true to the game, as if lifted from its software, and Pyramid Head was friggin' awesome. So I recommend it for fans of it.
As for others, I recommend it as well if you can look past the bad stuff, instead of the usual jump scares, there are some true horror moments in this film and a lot of cool things as well that could easily elevate this into a cult movie. Overall, I give it a straight B.
