The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Almost Deserving of top 10.
A wonderful film. It was visually stunning. At times the action got a bit ahead of the character development and I felt the influence of Hollywood getting a bit ahead of the influence of Tolkien. All in all, though it was an almost perfect movie. Best viewed as a cinematic tribute to the books (how could a movie exceed such a story?). At three hours, it seemed short and in my opinion could have been longer and more fully developed. I found several scenes very moving and indeed it stirs the higher emotions and brings honor and virtue as well as adventure to the screen. I give it a 9.5 out of 10.
Exit to Eden (1994)
The book is in here somewhere
I watched this movie, having been a fan of Anne Rice's novels. I found that a few of the scenes did a good job of imagining what the book was suggesting. These were mostly trivial in the movie. I really enjoyed the story and managed to sit through the horrible overlapping story (All of Dan & Rosie's scenes) to catch a bit of the fantasy brought to the screen that had been in my head reading the book. I guess if it had been passed off as other than a comedy, it would have to be labeled pornography. The good parts of the movie show that this could have been a great project if they had attempted to stay close to the spirit of the novel.
Beach Babes from Beyond (1993)
What do you expect?
This was a great movie! It was a completely enjoyable adolescent fantasy. So what makes a movie great? Technical details? I think that if that were the sole criteria, our culture would be the poorer for it. So this movie is to "The Godfather" as new wave music is to Mozart. The point is, it is one of the best movies of it's type I've seen. The women are all beautiful (as are only seen on California beaches when movies are being made). It has a little of everything, a kind of battlestar gallactica meets baywatch meets the playboy centerfold video meets Wayne's World. There is plenty of charm and a reasonable (albeit predictable) storyline that keeps you interested until the next bit of eye candy graces the screen. Joe Estevez may not have his brothers career, but does a good job of bringing focus to the story as the eternally adolescent Uncle Bud. Contains plenty of expected absurdities such as female rock band playing without the guitars plugged in. (Was that intentional?) If you're attracted to the box, rent the video, you won't regret it. As is promised, it is good non-violent erotic fun!
