Memento (2000)

Not smart. Not dumb. Patient.
25 June 2001
There have been lots of reviews written by fans and detractors of the movie. Inevitably, the words 'smart' and 'dumb' have been used to describe the movie as well as each group. It's not about that. It's about patience.

MEMENTO is about a man for whom the only certainty in life is that he needs to get justice for his wife. For that, he relies on the system -- his system. In the end, the system delivers. What's entertaining is to see how the system works and how it does its magic.

That, however, takes patience.

If you're looking for simple entertainment, don't come in. If you're looking for a roller-coaster, go see THEMUMMYRETURNSPEARLHARBORTHEFASTANDTHEFURIOUSTOMBRAIDER.

If you're patient and you're willing, MEMENTO will through you for a loop.

Keep in mind that 1.) I have a thing for Famke Jansen, and 2.) I saw this movie shortly after seeing WHIPPED. Why do you need to know that? This film is by no means the most deeply thought movie about relationships, but at the time I saw it, it hit all the right spots. Especially after seeing WHIPPED, I needed something that was relatively 'nice' and had people that could act.

The movie shows two people that fit as a couple but are torn apart when the guy (Jon Favreau) gets unhappy. Everyone rebounds in their respective ways and then crashes again. For a movie that I walked into completely blind (no idea what it was about), I was very pleased.

What was THAT?!?

This movie lacked... everything: story, acting, surprise, ingenuity and a soul. Fifteen minutes in, I was staring at the screen saying, "How could all of these guys get together and consider themselves friends (even without the girl)?" Another fifteen minutes in, I was praying for as much Amanda Peet as possible. When a bad movie quietly rears it's ugly head, eye candy is a nice consolation. But there wasn't much of that! Cheated on all fronts!
