28 Days Later... (2002)
Very effective and enjoyable
I think this is a good film. I admire Alex Garland since I was gladly surprised by that wonderful story he told us with "The Beach" (as an instructor, I'd love to teach a whole course on this movie!). This "28 Days Later" is a very effective movie, well directed, well performed and well photographed in my opinion. I'm not very fond of scary movies but this one goes definitively beyond this and captures your attention.
Nackt (2002)
Very good and interesting dialogues
I was very impressed by the quality of the dialogues in this movie: very fresh, very deep, very intelligent. The movie is based on a play (the title is "Happy") written also by the director of the movie and this theatrical origin is very obvious and... enjoyable. I really recommend this movie to anyone interested in topics like the emptiness and disorientation of the X-geneneration (Y-generation and so on), urban love stories, conflict of genders, and, above all, human feelings and reactions. Nice movie indeed. IKEA fans and other modernity-addicts should watch it as well.
The Way of the Gun (2000)
Good actors but not much
I think the actors are superb in te movie, all of them, but the rest (especially plot and direction) is really disappointing. The story is like the one from a cheap soap opera (Who's the father of the baby? Are you my employee or my son?) and many facts are deliberately hidden so that the movie have SOME thrill for the audience. Many ingredients in the story are really underdeveloped or hard to believe: the love story between the boss' wife and the black guy, the killer who fins the kidnappers everywhere and so on. The introduction for the movie hints some kind of humor content that could have been very beneficial for the movie but then you don't see any trait of it. I don't know... What about that scene where the two gorillas try to make head and tail of the problem in a similar way Batman and Robin usually do? I was missing the riddle there. I don't know, a bit disappointing.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
Surprisingly good
I was very impressed by the movie and all the actors taking part in it. The story is very rich and allows the spectator to get emotionally involved in multiple ways. There is a good thing about a movie that finishes and leaves you with the feeling of wanting to know more about many of the characters in the movie. I particularly love all the unexpected moments, lines and situations in the movie without being exagerated or out of place. Excellent, for people who wants to see something different and still mainstream.
Í skugga hrafnsins (1988)
What a powerful story and screening!
I just saw the movie here at Rice University. I was very lucky because the director was here with us brought by our English Department. He was very kind to share stories and anecdotes about the movie and answer our questions. I must admit I am very biased because I'm in love with Iceland but if there others over there like me, we do need to see this movie. Gee...I'm still in the XI century with all that people fighting against that landscape and those brave men. Anyways, it was very nice to talk to the director (the Icelandic consul was here as well) but I'm serious, the movie is really, really powerful. Excellent. Who wants to see the Lord of the Rings after this?????
Abre los ojos (1997)
Quite enjoyable movie and outstanding director
Alejandro Amenábar is a young Spanish director full with those wonderful ideas our Western movie industry needs. Tom Cruise is already aware of this but soon, with the release of his first American movie, more people will agree with this. I teach Spanish at Rice University and I chose this movie for one of my courses because I knew that the students wouldn't fall sleep with the plot at all and would be really motivated to try to understand the story as much as possible.
