Pearl Harbor (2001)
4/10
yawn.

maybe it was my fault for assuming that a bay/bruckheimer film would be exciting...but this silly love triangle flick was really very non-exciting.

visually it was a cool film, with great special effects during the few battle scenes. but the action i've come to expect after "bad boys", "the rock", etc. just wasn't there, and the battle scenes weren't all that thrilling to me.

5/10
too much of a regular movie

what a great premise! but unfortunately this movie gets bogged down with the typical hollywood content: a down on her luck single mom tries to elicit a commitment from a (physically and emotionally) scarred man. and somehow this plotline quickly takes over the rest of the movie. i feel like the premise (and the trailer that touts the movie as being about 'paying it forward') are nothing but cheap gimmicks to bring us in to see another movie featuring helen hunt playing tough yet vulnerable. now had this film actually been about 'paying it forward', we'd have a great flick on our hands. and by the way: holy cow, is the final scene stupid.

8 ½ Women (1999)

less comedy than depravity.

somewhere i'd read that this film is supposed to be a comedy. after seeing it, i'd call it anything but. the point of this movie eludes me. the dialogue is all extremely superficial and absurd, many of the sets seemed to be afterthoughts, and despite all the nudity and implied sexual content, there's nothing erotic about this film...all leaving me to wonder just what the heck this thing is about! the title premise could have been the basis for a fun (if politically incorrect) comedy. instead, we're treated to cheap, amateurish, unfinished sketches and depravity and weirdness for its own sake. if i want that, i'll go buy a grace jones cd.

Screwed (2000)
1/10
worst movie i've seen all year.

holy cow, what an awful movie! i'm a dave chapelle fan, and i like danny devito too, in most of the comedies he's played in. norm macdonald is a gifted stand-up comedian. but in this movie, chapelle's reduced to playing the silly black sidekick, danny devito is given NOTHING to work with, and macdonald is so unfunny i found myself thinking about cleaning house while the video was on. yikes. i wouldn't even recommend renting this movie with a free rental coupon.
