Night of the Lepus (1972)
Is it a bad film...sure!
.....but I still love this movie as it is one of my 'favorite bad films' of the 70's. It was also the first film that I recall receiving a promotional item for in the lobby ( a pin that I still have that says "Beware of the Lepus") which I thought incredibly cool. Yes, it's incredibly lame, but I have a soft spot for it...what can I say? Besides - you have Janet Leigh and DeForrest Kelly trying to be as serious as possible. You have 'giant' bunnies running around. You have generally all around poor acting. Did I mention giant bunnies? Well - rent this or buy it on eBay - do what you have to see this Great Bad movie!
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Sleep---AWAY!!!!
I vaguely recall seeing this movie at a drive-in when it was released in 1983. Obviously one's memory is much kinder than you would think, as it was completely erased from my memory .thankfully. I must agree that the end - which it seems everyone and their Mother comments on - is indeed truly chilling. The shot which pans out along with the incredibly ghoulish sounds, creates a memorable, sudden and super-creepy ending which really sticks with you long after this train wreck has ended. BUT. One must endure 85 minutes of bad over-acting, gay and Jewish caricatures, super-duper- short-shorts on out of place muscle boys posing as camp counselors, rehashed situations lifted from `Friday The 13th', giant oversized ponytails on tiny irritating ultra-sour women, and semi-homoerotic situations all wrapped around bad writing and dreadful acting. Is sitting thorough this mess REALLY worth 1 minute of horror at the end? Well, not really--- but if you CAN make it through the ending is indeed memorable and may keep you up at night. I had to pop the DVD back in to re-watch it since I couldn't stop thinking the image it left me with. However you really would be better off renting number of other horror movies from that period which are a lot more fun. In either case, a cocktail or two will certainly help you through this and enhance your viewing pleasure.. Sleepaway Camp?.you' d probably be better off sleeping and keeping this movie AWAY from your DVD player.
Dolemite (1975)
Dolemite Deluxe
Certainly this film is not for everybody---but for anyone with a sense of humor and love of period film Ð buy this immediately! Where else can you get a run down of 70Õs fashion, a period vocabulary primer, karate trained hookers, crime, a rap about the TitanicÕs sinking, shoot outs, and a co-star named Queen Bee (watch for her moving crying scene early on in the wardens office!) With a filming style thatÕs a cross between a porno movie/Dawn of The Dead/ and Car Wash, you cannot go wrong. This is one to watch over and over againÉafter you put the kids to bed.
