Diamond hunt in the desert leads to desperation and despair
25 May 2001
Great flick...James Spader does a fabulous job of looking grungy and sounding lowdown. I barely recognized him...a sign of great acting! Minnie Driver proves she can act AND look great even as a filthy, obsessed treasure hunter. Josh Brolin was so good at being "simple-minded" that I was surprised to see him as an intelligent character in another film. Fun, sad, with great twists. You'll like it...

James Spader and Keanu Reeves....it doesn't get any better than this!

James Spader in an outstanding performance as a cop tormented by many demons, both in his mind and on the other end of his telephone. Keanu Reeves is every woman's nightmare---a charming killer with the face of an angel and the soul of a demon. Tense, twisting plot, great ending. Gotta own it on DVD...satisfying for both men and women.

I loved it...

An exciting, mysterious and surprising adventure. Minnie Driver is a wonderful actor as Trini, a woman determined to fulfill the destiny of her family...to find the treasure of diamonds hidden by her grandmother in the desert. Great acting, delightful...James Spader is convincing as a crude but ultimately goodhearted convict. Josh Brolin is perfect as a slightly dim but sweet escaped convict accompanying Spader. Good plot twists, beautiful scenery, superb actors. A great way to spend an evening...

I loved it...sexy and exciting

Don't try to dissect these sci-fi films too much, just enjoy them. Angela Basset is excellent as the strong leader of the crew. James Spader is fabulous eye-candy for the ladies as the very buff, charming and heroic bad-boy of the crew. C'mon ladies, you loved it when he gave her the raised eyebrows and sweet smile. Who wouldn't love to spend some quality time in a zero-gravity chamber with him? Lots of fun on a Saturday night. I liked it a lot...give it a try.

Good-natured ghosts teach lessons of love to the living
17 February 2001
I really liked this film....admittedly not one of the top 100 of the decade but fun, light and clean enough for the entire family to watch. Maggie Smith and Michael Caine are, as usual, outstanding in their roles as fueding ghosts who have a bittersweet relationship even as ghosts. James Spader is excellent doing physical comedy. He is just having a good time in this role and the audience has a good time watching him. Great date movie. Fun and relaxing...

Critical Care (1997)

Terrific film lampooning today's medical/legal maze
17 February 2001
This film should be required viewing for all physicians, insurance execs and lawyers. The story is a dark comedy which looks at the twisted mess that is our modern healthcare system. James Spader is perfect as a cynical medical resident who learns the hard way about the realities of dealing with a patient's family, lawyers and the insurance games played by hospital administrators. As a family practice physician I can say that the plot of this film rings true on many levels....the stress of being a resident, the battle between family members, insurance companies and hospital administrators and the conflicting expectations of all involved. A favorite of the Sundance Channel and with good reason. A great flick...

My favorite movie of all time...a woman's movie from our POV
17 February 2001
DRIFTWOOD is an outstanding movie focusing on a woman's point of view about men, sex and having a "fantasy man" as a captive in every sense of the word. The acting is superb...James Spader is very believable as an injured sailor rescued by a lonely artist who, unfortunately, is quite mad. Women will appreciate how the camera focuses on the beauty of a man's body and sexual pleasures from a woman's perspective (refreshing!!). The actress playing "Sarah" is absolutely wonderful in a difficult, demanding character study of a woman tormented by the ghosts of her past who seeks only to find love---no matter what it takes. This film is sure to become an "art film" favorite, especially among women who have always dreamed of having a beautiful lover on a remote island, albeit with a different outcome. Enjoy...
