Very Poor
28 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot imagine why people think this movie is good. I thought it was slow, shallow and poorly written. Did not move me (other than almost putting me to sleep). Bill Murray's acting was, as usual, poor. (Although with the part he had I'm not sure anyone could do much better) I rated this one 2 out of 10, it's only redeeming quality was it's portrayal of modern Japan. I kept waiting for the movie to pick up but it never did. I think the screen writing was nominated for a Razzie award and an Academy Award. It deserves the Razzie.

The following has a few minor spoilers: The relationship Scarlett Johansson had with her husband was so poorly developed, I thought a high school student wrote it. Bill Murray's relationship with his distant but obviously pissed off wife, was ridiculous. I think any woman whose husband has to go on travel for a week for $2,000,000 is not going to be p***ed off.

A kids movie with too many stories
24 December 2000
My family & I looked forward to seeing this movie for weeks. When we did we were disappointed but I couldn't say exactly why. We saw it again on video and figured out why it was poor: There wasn't a major plot! Instead, it had at least five subplots that added up to less than one major plot. Other than Chris Elliott's and Chevy Chase's poor acting (their characters were pretty stupid), the acting and characters were pretty good. My 9 & 13 year old girls thought it was boring. It's a shame they couldn't have spent a little more time and money writing a story, instead of spending it all on advertising.

Very well filmed movie.
4 November 2000
This is an excellent family movie. The plot line was simple but enjoyable for people of all ages. Even my pre-teen daughters love this movie. The way the movie was filmed was the best I've seen in a LONG time. Everytime I see it I want to move to the town it was set in. I think there was an obvious "chemistry" between Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman. They acted like sisters.

But the best part of the movie was the music. First time we saw it, we ran out and bought the soundtrack. How many kids now a days have heard "Put the Lime in the Coconut"

The only real downside to the movie was towards the ending. I thought bringing in all the non-witch natives was stupid.
