Open Range (2003)
Best I've seen since the Unforgiven
Every movie has some flaws in it, but Kevin Costner did a really good job of putting the audience back in 1888. Beautifully filmed with some good dialog enhance an age old story of landowners vs. squatters. Let the violence ensue. Well worth the time and money.
Knock on Any Door (1949)
Oh My God!
I know John Derek made some awful movies, but how the heck did they get Humphrey Bogart to make this thing? This makes my top 25 worst movies of all times. If it weren't for Bogart's appearance it would have been a total loss. The writing is corny and the actors don't even do that justice.
No Way Back (1995)
Pretty Bad
This movie is a technical Mess. The opening scene shows the villain holding a modern fragmentation grenade and two minutes later it turns into a WWII vintage "Pineapple". They must have shot these two scenes months apart and obviously they lost the original prop. The doctor doing the autopsy pulls a "slug" from the body and states, "Another shell is found in the lower spine". That would be the first time a bullet "casing" ever caused a mortal wound. How did they use for a technical consultant on this movie, some 22 year old Vassar graduate?
Angels in America (2003)
You have to see it
You have to see this movie. You really can't explain it to anyone. I'm not sure I even understand it, but happy I watched it. If Jeffrey Wright (Belize) doesn't win an emmy for his performance no one deserves one this year. Justin Kirk(Prior) wasn't too shabby either. Actually Mary-Louise Parker and Meryl Streep did an outstanding job. I guess I really did enjoy it.
The Recruit (2003)
Interesting
The movie was interesting. No masterpiece, but it holds your interest. A lot of things in the movie are pretty far fetched and are hardly likely to ever happen, but HEY, it's a MOVIE, not a history lesson. Like why would anyone want to kidnap a training recruit to gain knowledge about the farm. When I went through training we never knew anything except a vague idea of where we were. That was a dead giveaway that it was a training excercise. Crap like that doesn't make it very plausable, but hey, again "it's a movie".
Martha, Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart (2003)
She's Nuts!
What better actress to play Martha than Cybill. I think they're both nuts! I have always wondered why Martha is so popular, and to be honest, I'm still trying to figure it out. Most of the things she comes up with are just common sense, but so many people think she is so brilliant. She is an excellent con woman. That's her claim to fame.
Enough (2002)
Almost Too Much
First part of the movie is pretty good, but it starts getting a little unbelievable. The one saving grace(pun)is the little girl who plays the daughter. She is quite a little actress for a kid her age. On the verge of precocious without being obnoxious. i wouldn't pay to rent it, but I saw it on TV so the cost was tolerable. 6 out of 10.
Windtalkers (2002)
Needed to be told
Technically the movie might not have been the greatest, but it is a story that needed to be told. They played an important role in confusing the Japanese towards the end of the war. It's good to see they are finally getting that recognition. Semper Fi.
The Face of Fear (1990)
Dumb
What a dumb movie. These people had about 5 chances to disable the this "Vicious" inept killer and chose to run every time so he could have another chance at them (after the next commercial). This one really taxes one's patience. After a while I was routing for the killer, knowing it couldn't happen in such a perfect fairytale world, just to end it.
The Wire (2002)
One of the best.
Gritty story set in the inner city projects dealing with both sides of the law. There is very little that is black and white, just a lot of shades of grey. It isn't polluted with a bunch of no talent "Stars", as some of the other shows on HBO. This series rivals any other that HBO has produced.
Summer School (1987)
Funny
This movie would never win any Academy Awards, but it was entertaining in many places. I turned on the TV and it happened to be on. I watched it for a minute, planning on changing channels. I ended up watching the whole thing. I felt good and didn't feel like I had wasted the time, which is more than I can say after watching a lot of other movies. A harmless, clever at times, feel good piece of escapism.
Icebreaker (2000)
Yuk!
I can't believe that Stacy Keach would actually get involved with that piece of trash. Stacy is the mortgage payment due, or something? I know it was suppposed to be "tongue in cheek", but it wasn't even funny the actors were so bad. They must have paid Stacy a fortune to be in this drek.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
What?
What is all the hype? This was a typical Kung Fu movie with a little more flying. One of the Goofiest movies I've seen in a long time. I think a lot of people are saying they liked it because it was nominated for 4 Oscars and they feel they should like it or there must be something wrong with them. Folks, it was a goofy movie! No plot, over acting and dubbing. That's all folks.
The Last Outlaw (1993)
Mickey, give me a break!
What's with Mickey Rourke? He's like a cross between a bad imitation of Marlon Brando and Charlie Chan. This movie had so much potential with the great character actors in it. The script was deplorable. I've seen Saturday morning cartoons with more of a plausible story line.

Desert Thunder (1999)
1998 Bad remake of the dirty dozen
Doesn't anyone in the movie business have an original thought in their head. This movie was a pathetic remake of the Dirty Dozen (with jets, of course.) It was so formula it was laughable. I still can't tell whether it was being played for laughs or it was just that pathetic. The writers have obviously never spent a day in uniform, or for that matter have never talked to anyone who was in the service. Like the Government would condone sending misfits and morons to save the world from the Evil mustachioed 4th Stooge. Give me a break!
Crazy in Alabama (1999)
Pleasant Surprise
I actually rented this video as a free rental with a two for the price of one at BLOCKBUSTER. I didn't expect much, but liked it much better than the primary movie I rented. Although it probably won't win any Academy Awards, it was an interesting story and the acting was decent.
The Big Brass Ring (1999)
Better Left Undone
The screenplay should have been buried with Mr. Welles. I actually can't figure out which was worse, the story or the overacting by the international cast (I use the word loosely) of characters. It was like watching a bad High School play. I think the director was trying to do the movie as if Orson Welles was directing it. He failed. I wondered what had become of Mr. Hurt. Now I know. There must be a serious lack of scripts coming his way in order for him to take this part.
